Erik Ten Hag has said his Man United won’t be buying many English players due to the cost of them. They will be pushing the non homegrown limits if they do get rid of many more and with many of their young homegrown players non English anyway if he has a long stint English players could become quite sparse.
Not just about cost as he also said it’s about quality so I presume he just generally doesn’t rate them. Utd will probably have a low count of English qualified players playing week in week out this season.
“I would like to sign English players because there is only one criteria and that’s quality in combination with the price. English players are quite expensive.” I don't think that gives the impression that he doesn't rate English players.
The long term effect might be that while senior squad players play for a wider variety of clubs compared to some of the big teams there will also be more playing at non CL and non Europe teams which could have issues from an experience point of view.
Impressed with Cooper at forest. Signing a few good English players from lower leagues. Richards, toffolo, obrien, Henderson and in for tavernier/lingard. A few good English players to watch there next season.
https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...-players-in-new-finance-deal?CMP=share_btn_tw The PL want the Championship to have a quota of U23 players as part of a restructuring of solidarity payments. Shit for the pyramid but perhaps good for domestic player development?
Anyone know a list of which England youth are on loan in the The Championship, League One etc this season? Looking at The Championship games today and it seems that highly rated English youngsters are thin on the ground. Obviously a number of loan moves will happen as the window comes to a close.
English players in the Community shield Starting line ups - 4/22 = 18% Total players used - 8/31 = 26%
#Rovers have signed Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton on a season-long loan deal. https://t.co/UvoH7w0nAN— Rich Sharpe (@richsharpe89) August 1, 2022
There are not that many highly rated English youngsters at the level of championship loans. Lots of them seem to be going league one and lower for loans. Even those seem as possible PL loans are instead being talked about as championship loan (Delap for example.)
It is interesting football has gone to five/six subs when the majority of people want rugby is going to reduce or even limit tactical substitutions. I wonder if football will go back the other way at some point.
Some pretty strong rumours that McAtee to Sheffield Utd on loan is going to happen sometime today. Could be a good move but I really don’t know but he needs regular first team football this season imo.
It’s just struck me how odd it is for the PL to be advocating starting line up quotas for the lower leagues when a lot of people want quotas in the starting line up for the league and an flop for the team in Qatar would add to that pressure,
Even if we flop there’s very little chance there will be any change to the quotas in the Premier League. Far too much money involved and all the Clubs want access to the best players and don’t care about where they come from. If there was an appetite for change then the FA had the best chance to make that change whilst negotiating Brexit but like always, they failed to make any real difference and bowed to the Premier League and the Clubs.
It depends on if the Goverment gets involved. If a Government decides it’s worth intervening to get public support (as the majority of the public think there are way too few English players in the league) then quotas could happen. The reaction Super league shows Governments could well intervene at some point and take on the clubs. The main negotiations happened during a period of success for English teams with the junior success’s in 2017 and then the semi final in Russia so the FA was weakened. Had Russia turned out to be a flop the FA would have been in a stronger position.
It will be interesting to see how many English players my club West Ham are starting in a couple of seasons time. Could be quite a low number with the homegrown quota pushed to the absolute limit.
And the problem is with the homegrown quota is that it doesn’t guarantee they are English qualified. Might end up with only two or three English qualified.
Of course. Through in the coming years it will slowly remove the Lukaku type of player who moved to England as late teens. No way for it to not count duals through. Would be extremely controversial for players who have lived in England their whole life to not count just because they play for another country and I’m not sure would be legal if someone challenged it under employment law.
Interesting to see how this goes. Michael Appleton always has his eye out for youth options. Delighted to sign for @BlackpoolFC on loan for this season. Can't wait to get started. See you all at Bloomfield Road! #UTMP pic.twitter.com/5cBuC28piL— Charlie Patino (@CharliePatino10) August 3, 2022
