There is such a thing as a release clause specifying a release if the team is relegated. Teams relegated from the EPL get huge parachute payments, but between contract structures and dramatically lower expected revenue, it makes total sense.

Isn't it a one-year parachute payment or is it spread out over multiple seasons? A relegated team could roll out a team with an EPL wage bill gambling on them making it back the following season. It doesn't account for release clauses, but I didn't see where Cucho had one.

Not that you are saying this but Cucho was not their best player. As other say, many have release clauses that require them to be sold. Others will refuse to play so they have to move them. Most teams know how impossibly hard it is to get promoted back up that with the drop in all the various forms of revenue even when considering parachute payments still require them to reduce their wage bill

Don't know if he did or not. It's a possibility.

Just illustrating that it's neither uncommon nor unexpected.

If the Yankees were relegated to Triple A, would they have the same TV contract? The same sponsorships? The same attendance?

With that massive loss in revenue could they afford their best players?

There are also wage clauses that they can have that will reduce their wages by a large percentage if relegated. 25-30% or so.

So maybe they feel they can make more money than sticking around with that clause in their contract.

Didn't United players (Ronaldo?) make a stink about losing like 20% of wages because they didn't make the UCL?

Uh, yea, it's a massive financial hit. It's going to be nearly impossible to ever implement pro/rel here because of the stark financial disparity it would be to drop down a division, but that would be a miniscule change compared to dropping from the Prem to the Championship.

Kinda talking apples and oranges here. As is the same in baseball, there is a massive difference between the very top and the very bottom financially but there really isn’t any similarity to the Championship and AAA baseball.

The point is the difference in revenue and budgets between the various divisions. Triple AAA teams can’t afford Yankees players. Watford is a Triple A team now.
