This thread will be for mocking our completely impotent, incompetent, and inept local media. To copy and past from another thread: Learned former #Crew96 F Miguel Berry had already been with DC United for a few days. Some knew as early as Friday that he would be traded.— Jacob Myers (@_jcmyers) July 18, 2022 This would explain why I couldn't find him at training that day #Crew96 https://t.co/dtChkzr9CL— Ty Fisher (@FisherTyler__) July 18, 2022
First time for everything. It doubles as a ‘shame the local media for never knowing anything first’ thread. Fire Jacob Myers is just catchier.
I thought all the Crew beat reporter needed to do was copy paste the final score from a game...maybe once a week or so.
By the tone of this, myers didn't even think to ask or inquire into this. That's the problem. Jardy would have tweeted: berry not in training at the open session and not on injury list, I will ask porter. Feel like that was a usual thing with Jardy. It's what the nfl reporters do all the time.
He’s pathetic. The number of times he’s been out scooped by national media and even fans (CrewRhino) is amazing.
On a Crew board, yes. On any sports message board, no. Heck, Browns fans are largely opposed to the idea of the team being covered.
In a nutshell, that’s his Achilles heel as a reporter: a chronic lack of curiosity and awareness. Plus, he’s just naive. For example, his parroting of the line earlier this season that Porter was 80% sure Berry would be Zardes’ replacement at starting striker. He just bought it, hook, line and sinker.
Poor Jacob was probably just getting his soccer knowledge from the esteemed majorleaguesoccersoccerdotcom writer Matt Doyle, who unironically suggested that Berhalter needs to cap Berry before Spain caps him (lol), and also suggested that Bez should sell Gyasi because Berry was going to be our guy. Yup. USMNT need to cap him before Spain comes calling. https://t.co/hjMXVhcBmV— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) February 26, 2022
[Deleting my prior thoughts] I think I need some time to think on this, because it's likely Jacob Myers is going to read this thread, but obviously someone needs to get a message across to him that it is not apparent to his readers that he is up to the job, he is adding very very little to the discussion, and that he doesn't seem to have any real curiosity about the Crew or an understanding of what he should be doing. But, I think because he is likely to read this, and he doesn't seem to have an editor or boss paying attention to what he is doing, that some constructive criticism from us would be more helpful than just tearing him down. He is young and could get better, but unfortunately there is no evidence he wants to get better.
He is probably just taking his first job in his industry of choice, doing whatever he has to do to get his foot in the door. Unfortunately for us, that crap first job is covering the Crew. I don’t blame him for not knowing anything about soccer when he first got the job, and I don’t blame him for struggling to come to terms with the weird rules in MLS (20 year fans still struggle with them). That being said, I agree that the lack of improvement of soccer knowledge seems to be an issue. Is it better than John Q Public? Yeah. Is it better than anyone who actually reads the Dispatch? Yeah. Do any of us actually care what the Dispatch says? No. It’s completely irrelevant with regards to the Crew, and vice versa honestly. Don’t take this personally Jake, the guy after you will probably be the same, the guy before you was the same. It is what it is.
I don't have any qualms with his soccer knowledge. I want him to be upset when he gets routinely scooped and I want him to ask more questions and do more reporting. I want him to stop "confirming" what others have said and do reporting of his own. I already read the national soccer media. I already follow them. I don't need Jacob Myers acting as a glorified quote tweeter. "Confirming" someone else's scoop on the team of which you are the only beat reporter should make one feel shame. And yet he just repeatedly does it without any hint of an understanding that that's a failure on his part. And not only that but every time he confirms some other person's story his tweets get 100 likes!!! Who is liking this obvious lack of effort?
I wonder if this is a by product of going to J-School at OSU and covering Buckeye Football where there are like two guys who get the actual news and then the rest of the media confirms and opines on it.
Meh. The Tweet sounded more like he was adding more information to an already confirmed story. WaPo had an article yesterday afternoon saying the Dispatch confirmed the trade along MLSoccer Soccer. What we should be up in arms over is that there was no one on Sunday asking about why Miguel was not in attendance... or even in the tri-state region on GameDay.
Does he cover other beats for the Dispatch during the soccer season? Maybe he's a part time employee with another job or something. But yeah, you'd think he'd be at practice each day and be able to ask players and coaches questions regularly. Heck, he could steal questions from the various fan forums the team hosts and follow up on them.
Berry was not on the bench for the Wednesday game versus DC. The question was raised on here about his whereabouts.
