Are the Cosmos going to participate in NISA or should they be considered as having been liquidated at this point?

They’re still technically on hiatus, but I think it save to say they’re never coming back as long as Commisso still owns them.

Commisso is building a success with Fiorentina; I can't blame him one bit for focusing on that. If he wants to sell the Cosmos, and I think he does, then restarting the Cosmos or more likely a youth version is a small possibility.

What does someone buying the Cosmos mean? The market for the team to occupy is either Long Island or Brooklyn/Queens. They will have to solve a very difficult 'stadium' problem. Within the city is the best but prohibitively expensive and difficult for a D1 team [ask NYC fc], for a D3 team it's just crazy.

In all honesty waiting things out is not unrealistic for Commisso.

Why would anyone pay for the Cosmos with the intention of launching a pro team? The brand is trashed. Starting with a fresh brand would be a better path.
Sure, you got like 700 clowns out there still holding on to some silly dream that someone will waste more money to salvage a brand out of the dumpster, but they are not enough to keep a club afloat.

maybe they can do like the Rhinos and find an owner that is fine with them being U23 and joining MLSNP next year as an indy club.

If the owner cared about the actual soccer they’d probably be in the USL along with Detroit City and Oakland Roots.

I don't know why you guys get so worked up about the Cosmos. They are a homeless D3 club that unless someone buys them and invests tens if not hundreds of millions they will stay right where they are. Rocco did his part, someone else will have to invest from here on.

tbf, the cosmos inspire so much sturm und drang in part because of their own insistence that they are big and important and in large part because of cosmofan's insistence that they are big and important because there used to be a club of the same name that was big and important 45 years ago, well before they themselves were born.

it's important to those fans that you know how iconoclastic they are because they support a tryhard d3 team and not some mls team.

I have follow soccer since NASL-V1 and saw them play a few times, loved the one time my Aztecs beat them at the Rose Bowl... but we are talking now about only a name that was something 40-45 years ago. The new fans of today's MLS & USL are probably not to concerned about them or even know of them unless they researched or heard of Pele. Their ship sailed.
Had they buried their egos, they would have been probably playing at Meadowlands instead of Metro-Stars (not sure of the timing on that) and who knows, the second time in NY may have been the Red Bulls.

Cosmos and Jacksonville should have simply joined the stable USL-C along with the likes of Detroit & Oakland making the jump. Be very successful in USL-C and who knows, instead of NYCFC coming in, the Cosmos could have jumped up like other USL-C teams have done.

Just a lot of what ifs at this point and time.

Maybe this thread should be merged with the last remaining Freddy Adu thread. That way, both dead horses could be beaten at the same time.

Truer words were never spoken. I never understood the Cosmos' master plan that they announced publicly at the time. Somehow they were going to "rule American soccer" by playing in Div 2, winning Div 2, qualifying to and winning The US Open Cup, and then from there qualifying to CCL and winning it????? When was the last time Div 2 won the US Open Cup? Did they ever truly believe that a Div 2 club was capable of beating the best of Liga MX for CONCACAF superiority? They balked at how much they had to pay to enter MLS (100 mil), but somehow we were supposed to have believed that they wouldn't balk at spending the same amount of money or maybe more to construct a team that could have credibly competed at the highest levels of CONCACAF? At worst it was pure delusional thinking and at best it was letting their emotions get away with them. Anyway, in the end all of us found out that it was a lot of hot air. They never even came close to accomplishing the master plan. All they did was win the Div 2 championship three times but they found out the hard way that in this country only the true die hards care about who wins Div 2. They always fell by the wayside in US Open Cup and they never qualified for CCL. A few years later and they were knee deep in money troubles.

A lot of Cosmos fans who posted on BS seemed to think that winning the US Open Cup was going to be a piece of cake. That's what convinced me that they were delusional.

I went to a PU-Cosmos Open Cup match in 2014. The Cosmos did make it to extra time, but lost to the Union. There were several brawls.
PS-I've been to two of the NeoCosmos matches. Not many of their "fans" can say that.
