Just a bit of further context -- Doneil Henry's salary is $400k. He is 29, was a starting CB with the Whitecaps in 2018-19, where by all accounts he was a reasonable if slightly gaff prone regular. He then spent 2020-21 in Korea before signing with LAFC earlier this year. He also made 7 starts for Canada during the most recent WC qualification cycle. So he seems like a competent but injury prone CB, which would immediately put him pretty high in our pecking order. Is it worth $400k and losing our place in the waiver order? I don't know, I'm glad that's Leitch's job and not mine.
In other rumors, there's a lot of smoke coming from Toronto at the moment. It looks like they are close to signing Federico Bernardeschi (!) who is out of contract. You would think this would have to be a DP deal. They would probably need to clear some room, so TFC could be sellers on the trade market...and as I type this I am now reading that Inter Miami is trading with them for Pozuelo. I was going to pitch us getting in on the action, but oh well.
Pozuelo is a great player but didn't have a spot in Bradleys system. It would be great to have a player like that but his salary is 4.5 million so never gonna happen.
Are you sure it’s Bradley’s system that’s the issue? I watched their last game, and Pozuelo looked very slow. Didn’t he have a major injury last year?
I haven't watched them all year. I just got that from Doyle https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/insi...to-austin-are-more-than-just-bonus-games-more
How much money is that off the payroll over the last year and a half... The San Jose Earthquakes have freed up almost $2,000,000 recently with the departures of Chofis López and Francisco Calvo. This could be a great opportunity to retool and make a push for the playoffs this season. #Quakes74 #MLS— Favian Renkel (@FavianRenkel) July 6, 2022
Well according to the MLS players association figures, our total guaranteed compensation is $9.75 million after subtracting Chofis and Calvo. The 2021 figure was $11.0 million and 2020 was $10.9 million. League-wide salaries were up 14% from 2021 to 2022, so if we just kept up with the league, our salary spend would be $12.5 million. So by my estimation, we are 2.75 million below a status quo baseline. The lowest spending team in the league was RSL at $10.47 million. After they signed Luna, my best guess is that we are now the lowest spending team by around $1 million.
Is the Calvo thing really a done deal? I'll believe it when I see an official announcement. This Renkel guy is not all that reliable. Hope it's not you . BTW not sure how you calculated our total guaranteed compensation, but remember we paid for half of Chofis's and Calvo's salary already. So if they go off the payroll now, that would be about $800k savings total (as they were both making ~800k). Renkel's "freed up $2 million" is not correct. If we wanted to spend the money saved on Chofis / Calvo, we could for example offer a couple of guys ~$400k to play the 2nd half of the season or one guy ~$800k.
This is a good point, but 1. it allows for comparison with other teams whose salary has also been paid for the half of the year already expired, and 2. any players we sign we would only pay for the remainder of the season. So the annual figures I think are the right ones for thinking about potential signings.
OK, so bottom line is that we could sign say two guys for $400k per half year (equivalent to ~$800 per year) or say one guy for ~$800k ($1.6k per year equivalent). Essentially we can make like for like signings for Chofis and Calvo or combine to make a bigger signing. That of course assumes we want to stay on some target budget. One guy for an annualized $1.6 mil is could be a pretty significant signing. I think Leitch will go more patchwork though - a couple of solid players as depth / potential starters. If I were him I would consider signing two defenders - a CB and an outside back. The numbers show that our offense is pretty good but our defense is not. We still have the worst GA in the league and we have at least one game less than most teams.
Could this be the right back #Quakes74 fans have been asking for? #MLS https://t.co/yfVXm3vt7c— Favian Renkel (@FavianRenkel) July 6, 2022
I could post multiple references to needing a right back over the past year or two (if I wasn't so lazy), so yeah - it is a need. In fact, I don't think there is ANY defensive spot on the roster that couldn't do with some improvement. Just look at our record this season! I think both Marie and TT would be better employed as midfielders.
I have not heard much of a shout for one here on these boards since the season started, but, yes, improvement can be made almost anywhere on this team. Nevertheless, the most pressing need is a centerback.
Unfortunately Mason Toye is not getting games at Montreal. Id love to bring him in for another look at forward. Id throw a 2nd rounder at Montreal to think about it. Tim Parker isnt getting any games with the Dynamo, hes a reliable veteran who I think is better than is let on Same for Mr. Nabilai Kibunguchy, remember that guy? Center back out of UC Davis in the draft a couple years back.
I would be shocked if Montreal is ready to give up on Toye. I think he's had some injury problems, no? Still tons of upside with him.
You are correct. Mason Toye was out with a long term injury. He's been back for three games, in which he's played 120 minutes total. In his one start so far he had two goals. Really doubt Montreal are giving up on him... https://www.mlssoccer.com/players/mason-toye/stats/
Four days before he was fired last year on Friday, June 25, 2021, the Quakes GM Jesse Fioranelli stated this on the Nathan signing. He was fired or forced out the following Tuesday on June 29th. Unless the deal was in the works many weeks beforehand, I’m surprised Fisher will have allowed him to make the deal. Especially since he knew he would be firing him. Anyway, figured this post belonged here.... Anyway, I doubt they will sign anyone notable and certainly no one like Bale or Chiellini.
Not only did Fioranelli sign Nathan, he signed Espinoza, Lopez and he also drafted Yueill, Marie and Beason. That's six of the current starters.
