Before I was the HS assignor, I got pretty good games. When I became the assignor, I went from doing 60 games to 24, and they ranged from awful to pretty good. But, mostly they were the late adds and the extremely late turn-backs, and the occasional 7PM start since that was a safe start time for me as the assignor. At the end of the year, I gave myself the smallest girls group state semi-final because I had never done one in all my years, and it was the only time I was ever going to do one. And, now that I have done it, I won’t be doing that anymore.

Yesterday I was CR on a scrimmage and after a sub, the team that subbed scored a goal. Before kickoff the scoring team coach realized that they had 12 players on the field, called out to me, pulled the kid off and told me to start with a goal kick. Had no idea what the correct restart was, apparently was supposed to be a DFK from where the extra player was, not like anyone cared.

I guess now I'll have to be extra vigilant about subs coming on/off for every game I do moving forward, probably will require the AR1 to always give me a thumbs up when subs are clear

I'm curious about the proper restart here. If the substitute interfered, then it's a DFK.

    From Law 7:

But in @soccerref69420's scenario the substitute did not interfere and play did not stop. So I think a goal kick is actually the proper restart. The ball went out of play but a goal was not scored.

    It's in law 3 section 9

Let's just hope the extra player wasn't a defender hanging back chatting with the goalkeeper.

Thanks @code1390. It would have been trivial to find that section in a paper copy of the LotG but it's not as easy on a phone when you aren't sure where to look :(

    :ROFLMAO:

Yes, it seems silly to use the extra player's position if they weren't actually involved in play...

Oh I'm sure everyone that just watched team A score would understand why you disallowed the goal and restarted with a PK for team B. No problem.

Indeed. In the real world, who is the extra player? If you knew that, then you wouldn't have restarted with more than 11 players on the field, would you?
Not to mention, when a goal is scored, who remembers exactly where any player, other than the scoring player and the goalkeeper, were on the field at that moment?

    If that!

I'd be inclined to make the scorer the extra player, and give the defenders a DFK that, golly, sure is close to a GK.

I always thought the change to a DFK was a pretty stupid change. And the reality is that in most of the games most of us do, we usually don't know who the extra player is, as we don't know which player should have come off. I know that I will never consider that the defender in the PA was the player who should have come off.

(IIRC, there used to be a debate over whether the correct restart was a GK or an IFK, and I *think* that was the guidance that USSF changed from one to the other after the print copy of the ATR was issued, so for a year the print copy and the e-copy had different answers on the restart.)

The one time you could award a PK would be if the extra player was a second goalkeeper, but nobody would be so oblivious as to allow that!

So when you tell the coach he has 12 on the field, and the one he tells to come off the field is in the PA on the other end of the field where the goal is scored, you caution that player and award a PK?

That's what the current laws say. When IFAB changed those restarts to DFKs from IFKs, we had a lot of ideas on unintended impacts. Mostly around "but what if the person who did that was in their own PA?"

While there is definite competition for the distinction, this is certainly in the running for IFAB's dumbest Law change.

You guys will not believe the game I had tonight. It will go into the record books.

I was talked into the center for the semifinal for this men's tournament that was put on by this local cultural society of a small African country. Our crew was two white people (me and an AR) and two Hispanic people (AR and 4O), this is important later on. The teams were like NPSL/UPSL level and luckily one of the ARs brought his comms.

The game was very hard fought, dirty tackles, and regulation ended 1-1.They had the genius idea to do two full 15' ET periods despite both teams wanting to go straight to KFTM.

Misconduct count after regulation: Red 2 YC, White 4 YC and a SFP RC

In the two ET periods, goals were scored by white at 105', red at 107' and 117' to make it 3-2 red. Due to the ridiculous amount of injuries and deliberate timewasting, I had 5' stoppage time after ET2. At 120+5', the last attack of the game, red committed a DOGSO-H RC. After everything settled and the PK was scored by white to tie the game at 3, that goal came at 120+7'.

Misconduct count after ET: Red 6 cautions and a DOGSO RC, White 5 cautions and a SFP RC, as well as a coach OFFINABUS RC, so 11 cautions and 3 RCs.

Now this is where even more insanity comes in. On the final PK, the red keeper got injured I guess sliding on the turf, his knee was bleeding and he could barely stand so they needed to sub their keeper but had used the allotted 5 subs. I literally get the IFAB app on my phone and show the tournament director (regional ref of same African country descent) that they can sub the keeper with one of the 10 field players. However, the director is saying how they aren't using IFAB they are using FIFA rules. What the hell are FIFA rules, IFAB has been the rule maker for like 5 years. None of us refs know what he's talking about. Cue THIRTY MINUTES of chaos as the director retreats up into the press box (HS stadium) trying to print out a rulebook that is covering their specific tournament, leaving the four of us on the field alone to get questioned/berated/harassed from both teams. Red team harassing us about why we are trying to make them play with an injured GK and why the hell they had so much stoppage time in ET, white team harassing us about if we try to let them switch their GK.

Initially, the director was going to force red to play with the injured GK. Then, smartly, somehow he decided to use the IFAB rules. Before KFTM started, we contacted the local police department to be on site to escort us out of the stadium because we knew with the players and spectators this might be bad.

We go to the KFTM and after 5 kicks, it is once again 3-3, and ultimately the white team wins KFTM 8-7. I had seen the police outside the stadium for like 15-20 minutes, but apparently they left, right before KFTM ended so the cops are nowhere to be found. We have to end up getting escorted out by the tournament director and a few other tournament reps and like I mentioned at the start, being the only two white guys and two Hispanic guys in a stadium of hundreds of African and African-American players, coaches and fans, we couldn't exactly blend in when leaving. We got accosted a few times but the tournament guys pushed them away.

The game kicked off at 6:30 PM. Regulation ends around 8:15 PM. ET kicks off at around 8:20 PM and ends at 9 PM. Due to the rule chaos, kicks from the mark don't start until 9:30 PM. Kicks end at around 9:45 and we wanted to let fans and teams file out so we ended up not leaving the stadium until 10 PM.

By the way, I will be an AR on the final tomorrow.

The final was just as bad as the semifinal yesterday

CR gave 5 minutes stoppage time. At 90+4' the team up 2-1 put a shot on goal, I was right on the end line. The keeper caught it, ended up back in the goal, ball fully crossed the line for a split second then he held it out, I put flag up, goal scored 3-1. Of course the team that was scored on was on my side of midfield. I was close to getting the hell beaten out of me by the players as well as the keeper running all the way to my face but the tournament reps got in between. Then behind me, spectators jumped out of the stands onto the track and a huge brawl started with players and we ended the game and ran to the AR2 empty side of the field while we watched this happen. They had "security" for this game which consisted of like 5 guys who wouldn't have been able to do anything.

If I would have even gotten touched, you can be sure I'd immediately hit the ground screaming, police called, lawsuits filed.

All in all a good two days.

I would say add on there "nothing good happens in unsanctioned adult tournaments" which is what this was. Basically every one of the adult men's games was out of control from a player conduct standpoint. In the 4 games I did (1 regular, 2 semi-finals, 1 final)

    - Lots of dirty late sliding and the referee assault
    - SF1: 5 YC and IMO should have been near 10 with the dirty slides but the CR wasn't great
    - SF2 my game: 11 cautions, 3 RCs
    - F: Ended with 10 YC, 2 RC, me nearly getting assaulted, and a spectator/player brawl

And some refs I know from the other games were having 6-8 cautions a game.

Basically every one of these games was a nightmare scenario game that any ref would have to deal with. I don't even know what to call the level of play. The players were pretty good, probably rivaling NPSL/UPSL level, but the out of control reckless play made these games an absolute terror. I feel like if this happened at a legit game like MLS Next, NCAA, WPSL/UPSL/NPSL, a coach would pull their team off the field for player safety. I had never seen anything like this before and I hope to never see anything like it again.

This Spring I did 30 youth games for one of my clubs up near the top of number of games one ref did. Did a lot last Fall too. This weekend they are having a girls "college showcase" tournament for Fri-Sun, many ECNL NPL GA teams. I set availability as all day all 3 days, hoping to get 2-3 games a day, figured my service would get me that. Did ECNL games, NPL games, did MLS Next games in the club (although not this association), show concern with games, etc.

I get a grand total of two games on Sunday, while I see other refs who barely if ever do games for this association and spend their time in other local clubs getting 2-3 games each day, some refs who are definitely weak, only do lower level games, etc.

Won't dare question the assignors as to why I got shafted because I'm sure that behavior will knock me even further down the list they obviously have me low on despite me efforts and game levels. Must get bad reviews about me, my refereeing is just subpar and I'm much worse than I think I am. I'm just so tired.

Ran the Regional fitness test for the first time.

I failed and bowed out 3/4 of the way on Lap 7. After a 10 minute break, I got back up and finished the remaining laps.

    I think I failed because:

    1. I had a small lunch. No protein
    2. It was 90F
    3. I had a belt tool over my tshirt that kept my keys/phone in and let no cool air in.

The actual fitness test is in one week....
