Sorry to keep harping on this but Vanney saying the above quote is all you need to know about his soccer acumen. A "summer signing" is synonymous for a difference maker and no person with any understanding of soccer would say Costa is anything more than an occasionally available journeyman player at this point in his career. And that is being generous. Sure he can give you 30 minutes of pretty good soccer - out of every 3 hours he's on the field. And he's usually not on the field anyway.

So that is why the "Vanney is wearing too many hats" or "the organization is why Vanney hasn't been effective" arguments make no sense to me. Both of those things may well be true but they don't explain away his bone headed decisions like his refusal to start Joveljic no matter how many goals he scores or pushing the organization to sign Cabral as a DP and then starting him game after game despite him contributing almost nothing.

And a big reason we gave up 3 goals so quickly vs MINN is because our players still don't know how to cover for each other when teammates push up. And we don't know when or how to take strategic fouls.

We don't how to evaluate risk/reward for damn sure. WHY GO FOR A LUNGING TACKLE WHEN YOU HAVE NO COVER BEHIND YOU????!!! We did that several times in this game and it cost us dearly.

WHY DO WE HAVE OUR KEEPER KEEP MAKING SOFT PASSES TO COVERED PLAYERS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PITCH WHERE TURNOVERS ARE DISASTROUS??? We did that several times as well, leading to dangerous turnovers and putting our defense under immediate tremendous pressure. And we repeat the mistake game after game after game.

Well-coached teams don't make those same mistakes month after month. So don't tell me Vanney is struggling because he is spread too thin (he may be) or because the Galaxy FO sucks (they do), he is struggling because he isn't a good coach. Not for us at least.

"Getting Costa back is like getting a summer signing." WTF? Tying up another year with this lousy DP is the exact OPPOSITE of getting a summer signing. In fact, it literally blocks us from getting a difference making DP. You know, like the DP's we face on a regular basis?

    :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

(I'm mad, in case anyone missed that.)

[None of this is to pick on any poster. I don't even remember who says what. I just don't understand how anyone can watch our team play and still think Vanney is a smart coach. The above quote was just another piece of evidence of what I've been saying for a few months now. Even if his overlords want him to be a company man there are ways he could have given lip service to Costa without making such an unbelievable claim. ]

PS - I'm now officially on the burn the whole house down bandwagon. There is no saving this organization without a clean sweep, top to bottom.

Listening to COG, they're audio of Vanney saying he wants to bring in a DM so that Rayan and Delgado can get forward; is that supposed to be Brugman? He looks like more of a playmaking 8 than the other two.

Is that so when Delgado surprises everyone and passes to the other team for no apparent reason it’s happening farther from our goal?

Edit: Seriously, though isn’t that a lot of holding mids? I was hoping one or more of them would be on the bench.

This makes absolutely no sense. Delgado is good at some things: high work rate connecting midfielders, sending accurate long high balls from farther back to advanced teammates on the wings, etc. But in the final third he has been abysmal: 0 assists but lots of turnovers when trying to pass into the box. Rayan is also not good in the final third - only 4 assists 38 games (37 starts). As often as Rayan gets the ball in advanced positions his assist number should be at least twice that. As far as goals, he had an astounding 4 in his first 6 games! But his stats from prior seasons showed he was not much of a goal scorer - at all. And guess what - he has 1 goal in the the last 32 games. No surprise. That hot start was an outlier in his career.

This guy Gaston seems much more lethal in the final third.

So as usual these days Vanney has it exactly backwards. We absolutely don't need more Delgado and Rayan in the final third - we need them doing the other drudge work - breaking up plays, showing for connecting passes, getting the ball to the real playmakers (LOL, like we have any other than our two old men Victor and Sasha).

Delgado will probably sit a little higher in the defending third and on the wings forward with Brugman in the middle but when Brugman goes forward to take open space in the middle forrward, Delgado tracks back into the space behind to defend. It sounds clunky but it works (I believe - I'm guessing a little as to how Brugman plays because haven't actually seen him in a complete game.) This method keeps Delgado doing busy work in areas he is good in.

Still curious who Vanney would sit - Rayan or Delgado- if we get Brugman.

I'm pretty sure the dmid pair will be Delgado and Brugman and I'm guessing Raveloson plays more of an offensive role

We have room for a max of five starting midfielders.* If he starts Delgado, Raveloson and Brugman together then Vanney will have to split 180 minutes of playing time between five and a half players: Vasquez, Grandsir, Cabral, Alvarez, Costa and Sasha (1/2 because injured a lot). That’s 5 3/4 middies if we count Aguirre. That means three of the first five listed frequent starters go to the bench for most games. You think Vanney would/could do that? Effectively and without causing unhappiness in the ranks?

If Costa is healthy and available (big if, I know) then his DP status dictates he will be one of those starters (unfortunately). That leaves the other starting spot to Cabral, Grandsir, Alvarez or Vazquez. Alvarez is easy to bench because he doesn’t do anything well —score, assist, cover ground, win 50-50 balls, play defense. But Cabral is Vanney’s pet Junior-DP. Grandsir is out best dribbler and best advancer of the ball to the final third. Vazquez is our best final third passer (unless Brugman takes over that mantle, as I expect). Which two of those three do you leave on the bench regularly. Or do we go with a constantly changing starting lineup? Neither option seems appealing to me.

So if we do get Brugman and I were coach I would let Raveloson and Delgado battle for the starting DM position. I would move then Brugman up to be a freely roving CM/DM/AM and surround him with Grandsir and Costa and put Chich and Dejan up top.

    —————Chich——Dejan——
    Grandsir ——Brugman-——Costa
    ————-Delgado/Rayan

But if bossman Greg says I can’t start Dejan then I go with Grandsir and Costa free to run forth and back on the flanks and Brugman and Victor moving freely wherever they want in the center of the field, backed up my the winner of the Dekgado/Raveloson battle:

    ——————Chich————
    —————— Victor——————
    —Grandsir——————Costal —
    ——————Gaston—————
    ———————————————
    —————Delgado/Ravel———

tldr vers; if Brugman comes and especially if Costa is available I think either Delgado or Rayan goes to the bench for minutes reasons. Also neither are good in the final third, so let’s replace one of them with Brugman who appears to be good at this.

*And only four middies if Vanney comes to his senses & starts both of our true forwards.

-343/352 (for me, the ball playing Sega makes this attractive)
    --------------------dejan--javier
    --------------------vv/kljestan/costa/efra/ pozuelo:D
    --edwards------------------delgado
    ---------------brugman---------------------araujo
    -------willliams------sega-----depuy
    -------------------gk: Bond.

Per usual, formation shows defending position. Brugman the airballer shades to left to protect the more aggressive forward dribbling Edwards and sits back behind one touch ground baller Delgado and, on turnover of possession, as the ball goes forward, if the middle opens up, brugman charges forward and Delgado drops into the 6 slot. If theh opponent chooses to clog the middle, Delgado plays the overlapping Araujo in on the right or hits Edwards on the left if there is no play to one of the attackers.

I completely forgot about Farai Mutatu, so he is having visa issues according to COG which really sucks.

I have no idea how immigration works but it really sucks that he was able to attend Michigan State but his agent and the Galaxy didn't get his visa in order so he could actually play in the USA, seems like another missed opportunity for him to be put in a productive situation to help the Galaxy

I have zero confidence in anything that Galaxy management does so I wonder if this is another Galaxy blunder or if this would have been an issue with any MLS team he would have joined

This is why I want my coach to care about the guys on the team not fall in love with his guys.

Any moron can look at the data and adjust the minutes he gives his players. It takes a special kind of true "football genius" to look at the data and ignore it. (BTW this applies to all sorts of jobs, not just coach). I'm not sure if I'm hoping Vanney is that special kind of genius or if I'm hoping he's just ignorant and hasn't looked at the data.

EDIT: Those numbers would suggest, bumping Joveljic's minutes even a modest 150 minutes at this point, even assuming that means benching Chicarito because Vanney insists on playing 1 forward, would be something like ~11% less minutes for Chich at this point, and ~2 goals and 1 assist more for the team.

Yeah, that was my point - you need to bench either Raveloson or Delgado if we get Brugman. You benched Raveloson, which I think would be the smarter choice. Except I would make it an open competition between the two for the position. Let’s see what they can do when they are fighting for playing time. I know for sure that Rayan could play better with more effort and concentration.

Problem is we don't have a DP spot and Inter does.

But if you want to talk about our FO signing Costa to one of our DP spots and making this move not possible, then I'm with you....
