The thing about Mount is that despite producing the numbers he doesn't really pass the eye test. He never looks in complete control, he always looks hurried, even if he does get the passes/shots off correctly in the end.
I think that’s his way of playing. Hard to see that changing now no matter who might coach him in the future.
Mount: Chelsea's player of the season for the second year consecutively. He played the pass that helped win Chelsea the European Cup, he became the youngest player in the club's history to score in four consecutive games and he ended the 2021/22 season as the Blues top league scorer. Double digit in Premier League goals and assists last season. Only 3 under-25 PL players have created more than 100 shot-creating actions in both 2020-21 and 21-22: Mason Mount — 163 and 111 Raphinha — 109 and 119 James Maddison — 100 and 105 I think ahead of Lampard at same age in most stats. At Club he only does not pass the "eye test" for Stevie Wonder. For England, though he like some others does not get enough credit for defense and overall play, not as good for England as for Club but I would say more a system/Southgate/use conflict, but I don't care if he plays for England, rather he rest really, as lots of good choices in front 4-5 to choose from, still not sure why 7 (5+2) are needed to play on their heels by Southgate either. Just silly to knock the kid (club bias) I never get that, but hopefully I am smarter than to get stuck again arguing here for another decade that like Lampard he is actually at least an average player.
https://www.goal.com/en/news/scary-...-confident-2022-world-cup/bltdf055b6c4b5fb318 I think he is right that it would be surprise if we actually did win in Qatar.
It's very difficult to see an England win in the tournament, I just think most times we play top teams we just see the familiar issues that for all the development we still aren't as good as the ball as the genuine top teams and also can't really control games. Doesn't really help for Qatar that so much of the team is out of form either. Really need a lot more to hit the ground running next season.
Does Rice actually say it would be a surprise if we won the World Cup? He seemed kind of confident imo but I myself would be majorly surprised if we won it. Hell, I can’t even confidently say we will get out of the group with the current form of our players and tactics of our manager I’m sorry to say.
I think the later has been a big part of recent performances much more than Southgate. I mean we know Southgate can manage a team out of the group stage but are the players in the form to do so. Managerial quality at the world cup if the players are in good form tends to become a bigger issue in the knockout stages.
This is true. I do think out of all our players Foden does seem to be the one to get away the most with a lot of underwhelming performances for England.
I think Southgate did seem to be somewhat disappointed with him at the Euro’s. He started him against Croatia and Scotland at the euros but then didn’t use him again until a extra time sub against Denmark.
https://www.sportskeeda.com/footbal...in-phillips-imminent-transfer-manchester-city Really can’t see it affecting him. I feel like even if he is barely playing he has pretty good chance of starting and if he is dropped it be Henderson not Bellingham replacing him.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/19058927/kalvin-phillips-manchester-city-leeds/ Southgate basically said after the Hungary game Gallagher is one of the kids that are for Euro 2024 - he would have step it up even further to have a good chance of making Qatar. Interesting through they is plenty of people wondering if it will go wrong for Phillips. We didn’t see this with Grealish last year.
https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/england-world-cup-southgate-kane-27373528 Some wise words by Sir Geoff Hurst.
I wonder if we could get a situation where Foden plays more than Phillips and Stones for Man City before the World Cup but he is on the bench while the later two start for England against Iran. Ditto he could play more than Mount does at Chelsea (and both teams will have played the same amount of games) but the later starts.
I was thinking purely hypothetically how you would get the best out of Chukwuemeka in this England squad. I think you’d need to adopt a formation with a 10 or dedicated central attacking midfielder, a formation that Southgate doesn’t seem to like - 4-2-3-1. ———-Philips———Rice———— —-Sterling—Carney——-Foden—- ——————Kane——————— I always use something like this on Football Manager.
After seeing how Ben Stokes has transformed England cricket since he’s come in as captain - with his positiveness and all out attacking play I wish we could get involved in the footie squad somehow. Maybe some of his magic will rub off onto Gareth
Definitely positive but a little bit reckless at the same time like the way he threw his wicket away today but definitely better than the god awful test displays over the past years. On Southgate, I doubt he will change his ways because of the positive atmosphere of the cricket team.
Talking about the lack of deep lying english playmakers, we have produced players like carrick. Why aren't we producing those types of players anymore? Scholes was another one although he wasn't exactly deep lying but he could pick out a pass from midfield
Stranger things have happened .. didn’t we get the England rugby team manager involved a few years ago after they won the World Cup ?
