The other team to be contracted was, of course, Miami. They had won the shield that year, but didn't play in Miami, except for maybe 2-3 games each year. They had a terrible management group and apparently a horrible stadium lease arrangement.

If LA had won MLS Cup against San Jose, it may have been the last game for SJ, at least for a while.

If LA played vs anyone else that year in MLS Cup 2001, San Jose would have definitely been gone for good.

The sidenote was that 9/11 caused an obvious cancelation of the rest of the season. MLS decided to use points per game to determine the playoff standings. When things resumed, we ended up getting trounced by San Jose in that "first to five points" system.

I was able to tour the training facility tonight (my work has the premium tickets). It was nice to see how they treat the more fortunate of us. Ha. My buddy interned with the Crew when they were still at Obetz so it was nice to hear his take on things.

They were showing a time-lapse of the sun rising over LDC on 10TV this morning. It was really cool the way the sun made the roof appear to change colors to gold.

The plant here didn't step up to the plate. It's not a coincidence that Miller Lite is sold at LDC and Busch light is not.

Yeah, it certainly doesn't serve Linden to build it between Morse and 161. Good for Northland though.

It was always a lousy place for a public park. Just like it was a lousy place for a stadium. I am not surprised that it is not moving forward at the HSC site.

Does the Boathouse still offer parking?

What a ********ing joke. For me personally, this was the one big public pay-off for the overall stadium deal. I don't necessarily blame the club, as it was the city, county and state that were working toward getting this sports park built. Assholes.

Its failure does, by the way, affect the Crew, as the team was supposed to have access to one additional turf field - for Crew 2 - that now won't be built. We've already read about the challenges of scheduling practice at the facility due to lack of field space.

Too many political entities to get this done. The state does not want to give up anything, especially parking (as it it tight for many events) to the city, if they can help it, which I can understand. It was amazing they got them all to agree in the first place to build the original stadium.

I'm still surprised that the government authorities did not buy the land that Lowes and Aldi sit on, back in the day, as it was an abandoned industrial site.

They might be able to use the Kilbourne park or obetz.

If they just need a random place to practice, I'm sure there are all sorts of fields in Central Ohio they could use. A field adjacent to their training facility is the key.

Maybe they can convince Virgil Strickler and the rest of the the Ohio Expo braintrust to let them acquire one more pitch-sized patch of land on which to build another turf field.

On the flip side, the original announcements about the sports park said that the community would have access to HCS, too. That obviously isn't happening. So perhaps 100% use of the HCS pitch might help alleviate the scheduling congestion a bit.

They already use the HCS pitch. I often see the lights on when I drive by. It's not just the Capys.

I never believed they would let the community use HCS as a meeting center or the field. Ginther was asked what the community could use there, and he gave a typical non answer.

    It wasn't just Ginther:

    https://www.dispatch.com/story/news...-community-sports-park-languishes/8850209002/

Just to be clear, he was referring to Mapfre/HCS, not the new stadium.

Also, of course they use the HCS pitch. However, it was reported a few months back that there's not enough field space for all teams to practice at the same time. We discussed it in the Crew 2 thread. The answer was supposed to be the new sports park, because one of the new turf fields would have been used by Crew 2. That field now won't be getting built.

Something tells me that this professional sports organization - as opposed to the old Crew - has a contingency plan.

    Two stupid questions:

    (1) Couldn’t Crew 2 practice on the HCS turf? It’s not like it will wear out from daily use like a grass pitch could.

    (B) Could one of the current grass practice fields be converted to turf? Also not necessarily a bad idea if multiple teams will be training and now don’t have future new fields to train on.
