The freeze made it look worse than it was. But the freeze was just him realizing there was no getting to it. So if positioning is OK then I think you have to be OK with the entire sequence there from Horvath. Cannon, on the other hand,,,

Horvath could not see the shooter (Larin) from this vantage point, because he was completely blocked by the defender (Cannon?). He had no visual cue. The shot seemed to come out of nowhere. This means that Horvath is dependent on a visual cue. This is a weakness that he can train away. Lesson learned.

Entire goal mouth being a huge mud pit didn’t do Ethan any favors. It’s more difficult to sort your positioning out when you have to factor in those terrible conditions and how they will impact your ability to react to different scenarios. Doesn’t absolve him but it’s unfortunate.

I've watched this many times. His positioning was fine. That wasn't the problem. It was the fact that he didn't see the shooter. He was completely occluded. The field played no role whatsoever.

Once you get past Dest, we have problems with our outside backs IMO. I know, Jedi was the hero of qualifying and he's a locked in starter but dude will have to step it up at the WC. He needs to become more surgical with the ball. It wasn't just last night in the mud either, that's pretty much his MO. Jedi has some serious strengths but his passing of the ball isn't one of them. RB is a flat out train wreck after Dest. Cannon did himself no favors in this window. We better hope Sergino stays healthy as he looks to be our only legit RB and our back up LB.

WTF Arriola, ouch. After a string of decent to even good appearances what was that. Looked to me like a bunch of turnovers and then a straight Red. I still think he brings more than Morris does at the point, but big moment from JM.

Musah is getting better. Seems like he's should be on the verge of breaking out for club at any time. If and when he gets that final ball thing down, he can be world class.

Good on LDLT. I've been mildly underwhelmed by him due to lack of final product but that is starting to come around a bit. Great ball to Morris. Excellent window from him.

I like this version of GGG sooo much better than the qualifying version. I've said it before, but he was coaching not to lose in the Ocho. I just think the whole Couva thing was so traumatic, and the pressure to qualify so immense, and he was so risk averse, that it kinda set the stage for that skin of our teeth qulifying experience.

How important are those two friendlies at the end of the summer. Let's all say some prayers to the soccer gods that we are over the injury bug and we have a fully fit squad from here on out.

Agreed. Seems like Berhalter had his mind made up already and the performance allowed him to keep his direction.

Between last night and the Canada-Honduras game, we cannot escape CONCACAF fast enough. I don’t know what sports Honduras and ES were playing, but they weren’t soccer.

Grab Canada, Mexico, and Costa Rica, and tell CONCACAF to pound sand. I know CONMEBOL is corrupt, but they at least play soccer. We will rise to the higher level in CONMEBOL instead of being dragged down to a bad level in CONCACAF.

I really mean early crosses from midfield. It doesn’t seem like it is used enough in favor of recycling possession. It was the goal that drove me to ask why the US doesn’t focus on attacking the box in that way more regularly.

Fortunately, we should only have one more game like this before Qatar. We’ll face more teams that want to play real soccer and referees who protect players.

I hate CONCACAF with a passion. I’m serious when I say we take Canada, Mexico, and Costa Rica and beg CONMEBOL to take us. Our countries hold all the eyeballs for CONCACAF. Take us out, and CONCACAF is basically Oceania. Time to play that card and get CONCACAF to get its stuff together.

Yeah I was just thinking the same. I like Hugo, but really?? There is only so much that can be done with the field...but the rest of that crap. It's not entertaining at all to me in the least. I feel no pangs of nostalgia for the glory days of qualifying campaigns gone by watching that. You nailed it pretty well, it's really not even the same sport.

The good news is that we won't have to play a really meaningful game (assuming you don't consider GC or NL really meaningful) in CONCACRAP for very long time, if ever.

Careful. You'll get called an elitist for suggesting that between a national federation, CONCACAF and FIFA, it is indeed someone's duty to ensure a host nation is actually qualified to host a match.

(And this not even getting into the CONCACAF VAR equipment mess...)

For anyone saying "what about Costa Rica in the snow?" ... you're just highlighting more CONCACAF failure. That match absolutely should have been postponed once the weather forecast was clear. It wasn't, and the weather became the challenge. Which is different from an El Salvador host site that would struggle to host a Sunday league match on a good day.

Yeah, I didn’t see the failures that others (including Gregg) saw. But I guess he’s done. It will be interesting to see who he brings in September.

That was funny because … CONCACAF.

    El Salvador ain't Lichtenstein.

That means it was about the same as playing Bolivia according to the FIFA rankings. [Just since you guys seem to want so desperately to be part of CONMEBOL so you don't have to play teams like..........El Salvador.]

We went down there and got a result under poor conditions. Sets us up for advancement.

People can talk about Cannon, Wright, Horvath, blah, blah, blah until the cows come home. They're all backups. We're arguing on the margins of the roster.

Tough game. The team looked a bit like they were trying to be too cute and lacked urgency until the goal by El Salvador woke them up. Bad mistake from Horvath and with precious few chances before Qatar he may have made himself expendable.

Musah was he best player on the field by a long shot, but ultimately lacked end product. Maybe he would have put that chance away when he was taken down for a deserved red. The MMA midfield lives with Musah's strong game and Wes in better form turning the tide when he came on for Aaronson. I keep hearing we will need something else for all these teams that are supposed to bunker in fear of the US, but that seems to actually happen a lot less than people think it will and I think it is unlikely to be the way teams approach us at the Cup. Maybe Iran, but no way does anyone else.

Arriola was a disaster and I agreed with the red card. You slide in recklessly, you can't also raise your legs waist high. Morris may have passed him by last night and since personally I thnk Morris is simply a better player, that is a good thing. Now, he's got a few months to get in form. Not a starting level guy but could be dangerous off the bench as he just showed.

Wright didn't take advantage of his shot, but he really wasn't given a great chance. He got little service, missed one clear opportunity and did well to win a ball with his head to Musah, but I think it is clear when one striker gets 90 against a weak team to run up his goals and gets the second half of this one but the other guy gets 45 in a mud bowl who is the clear leading player there. Ferriera didn't really make much of an impact either to be fair but Wright had a chance to take over a spot in this window and it never happened. How much was his failure and how much was the lesser opportunities given to him is sure to be debated but in the end it didn't happen. He will need a very big year next season to get back into the conversation, but he really does show a lot of tools with his size and skill on the ball.

Cannon looks like he is falling behind Yedlin for me. Defensively he is no better and he offers next to nothing going forward. I'm not wild about Yedlin but I trust him more than Cannon. Either are backups at best.

Weah was quiet for him, few nice moves but not really a mudder. Adams was solid and showed some fight. Antonee looked OK but didn't get much going in attack. Pulisic is looking much better within this team than he started this cycle and even though he didn't break through had another solid game. Luca did well in his late appearance. Center backs were fine but had little to do.

Overall, a sloppy game on a tough field but I tend to agree with Alexi for a change that it is all a bit too precious when everyone complains. Get on the field and get over it. Or, at least stop having all of Central America play in the snow and then complain that it rains when it is totally out of anyone's control. If it wasn't for the howler Horvath let in, we likely would have taken this one.

I wonder what Adams’ WWE takedown will do to his market value? He is smallish for a DM. Does it show toughness? Or the lack of ability to use physicality within the rules? Regardless, I loved it.

Why was this match allowed to take place on such a subpar field?

How is this not grounds to have the match replayed in a neutral 3rd country with a suitable field?
