God damn,Marinelli. He plays lights out in the last couple of games and then allows in a soft goal. Terrible.

We were forced to play more active in the second half and we looked good and had our chances. Nothing you can do about the second goal.

When does the second half season start? June? July? No schedule is available yet for the sites that I check regularly.

Thanks! As soon as I read this post, I went online to Paramount+ to see that the Union-Tigre match was live; thus, I caught the final 35 minutes of the match including Colidio's awesome strike.

I tend to follow leagues through another website, but they were slow in updating the Argentine league schedule, i.e., still were showing Phase 1 schedule and not yet showing Phase 2.

Rosario Central with a needed win yesterday, 1-0 over Godoy Cruz. Earlier in the week, their trainer resigned citing the lack of funds to be competitive. It looks like the club are going to appoint Carlos Tevez to his first trainer post as replacement.

In the first half, Lucas Gamba had his penalty kick saved, so when Central was awarded another PK near the end of the match, the goalkeeper Servio came forward and scored on the PK for the win.

@locoxriver …… Gonzalez Pirez, man…I do not know how he stayed on the pitch today. That should’ve been a straight red. I also couldn’t figure out why Ferrari was sent off. I watched the first half and River’s defense were just awful.

On the other end of the spectrum, Ojeda, was once again impressive for Godoy Cruz. No wonder why Botafogo are pursuing him.

They would have done us a favor by giving him a red. My god, that guy is awful.

I’d rather give some pibe from inferiores a chance. We’re wasting our time with GP

Watched this today on replay. The commentators were puzzled about the refereeing also. The RP player came in straight with studs on the ankle which, as you say, should have been a straight red.

As for Ferrari, he apparently received two yellow cards for the same segment of play (41'). Trailing the play, he seemingly knocked down a RP player (who grabbed his face, of course) and then when the ball went towards the corner, Ferrari did a sliding tackle through another RP player. Two yellows within seconds. Likely justified, Ferrari seemed out of control.

In the second half, the red given to Aliendro didn't seem justified. Multiple replays showed that he stamped his foot on the ground, not on the GC player's foot or ankle, but whatever. Maybe the Ref didn't want to be seen as being too favorable to River.

Nice win by Godoy Cruz anyway. I am having fun this second phase, watching both River and Boca go down in defeats!

Nice win today by Tigre 3-0 over Platense, which was their first loss in this phase. Goals from Cabrera, Menossi, and Colidio.

Tucuman continues to lead the table due to their stingy defense, and it reminded me that Tigre had a stingy defense in the first phase which is why they did so well.

Anyway, nice to see goals scored.

Colidio has been playing great during this session. He seems a step ahead of most of the players. Last week he scored a beauty and this week as well.

So now that Alvarez has left for England, how long before River Plate try to buy Colidio? Or Boca?

That is up to Inter. They can extend him, which I suspect they will and perhaps sell him off. I’m sure Boca would be interested, he was a part of their youth teams.

I was just looking at Wikipedia's Argentine league pages. Looks like relegation has been suspended since '20 because of COVID. It also kind of looks like the
Primera División has grown (but that could be mistakes/vandalism on Wikipedia). I thought the 5-year plan was to reduce the league from 30 down to---I don't know---24? Is there a new plan nowadays?

Relegation is active again, but they use a complicated formula. Hopefully, SuperMario can explain it. It isn't simply the bottom 2 or 3 teams from the table, but points are averaged over several phases.

For example, Tigre were promoted at the start of 2022 (first phase), and commentators have been talking about teams like Central Cordoba and others of being in danger of going down.

Oh, yeah, porcentajes (or whatever). I live on the US/Mexican border, and Mexico has done it the same way. Odd, but I kind of like how different countries do it differently (the Dutch system is unorthodox, too, but I enjoy watching that unfold).

Not sure about you all, but I'd like to see Primera División resume contracting (like it was doing for a while). 30 teams was huge. 28 is still huge. 20, maybe?

Our entire structure is convoluted. Every year or two, they want to change how the system and structure works. This is not anything new. Some will argue, they change the rules to favor certain teams because some fatcat has ties to the team and wants to keep them up or have them ascend to the top flight. Moreover the number of the teams…One season there are 20 teams, then 30, then 28… then 26… 24…then back to 26 to 28… Zone 1- Zone 2.

I think most of the fans are over it and they just go with the system that is implemented. I’d personally go back to the 20 teams, Apertura/Clausura.

    This.

I haven’t seen a single fan who likes these weird systems they invent. Everyone hates it and wants a normal 20 team tournament.

Of course if it was only 20 teams though, Barracas Central would have never made it to Primera :whistling:

Franklin Foer wrote a fascinating book about how football explains the differences in the world.

I just thought that maybe the constant changing of the Argentine league structure sort of represents Argentine society and politics. Hopefully, no harm, no foul.

I found the formula for relegation. BTW, there were 26 teams last season (2021) and 2 were promoted (Tigre and Barracas Central) to make 28 this year. So it looks like there were no relegations.

    From Wikipedia:
Relegation at the end of the [2022] season is based on coefficients, which take into consideration the points obtained by the clubs during the present season (aggregate table points) and the two previous seasons (only seasons at the top flight are counted). The total tally is then divided by the number of games played in the top flight over those three seasons and an average is calculated. The two teams with the worst average at the end of the season will be relegated to Primera Nacional. Relegation will be reinstated starting from this season after it was suspended by AFA at the end of the 2019–20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently, the bottom two clubs in the aggregate table are Patronato at 0.988 points (28th) and Aldosivi at 1.058 points (27th).

Central Cordoba is 26th at 1.07 points and Sarmiento is 25th at 1.097 points.

So those are the four clubs most likely in the relegation battle. Godoy Cruz is 24th, but has been doing well in this second phase so I hope they remain above the relegation fight. In the middle of the USA winter, I love to watch those matches being played in sunny Mendoza.

Rosario Central finally put together an offensive attack in the first half against Arsenal. Aggressive play in the box lead to two penalties that were put away by the goalkeeper, Servio, who is Central's top scorer now with 3 goals.

The third goal was a cracker from Veliz, who scored for the second match in a row. An outstanding goal, I tried to find a video online but couldn't.

Rosario has a group of young players that are developing just fine. Tevez's squad has 3 wins and a draw in their last 4 matches and have pulled themselves up to 13th spot.

Lol I’m loving Riquelme’s sabotaging of Boca.. gets rid of Izquierdoz (arguably Boca’s best and most consistent player the last few years) and Lisandro Lopez and replaces them with Roncaglia :ROFLMAO:

Brings in Benedetto and stagnates Vazquez’s growth.. and lets not even talk about Orsini and Briasco

Lets go of Battaglia (maybe not the best coach ever, but he wasn’t doing bad with what he had) to replace him with an absolutely clueless Ibarra puppet who can’t manage an AYSO team

I mean at this point I’m starting to think he’s a River fanatic because the amount of unbelievably dumb board decisions they’ve made since taking over is mind boggling. I don’t know how Boca fans haven’t been asking for his head, but I’m sure a lot of them are starting to lose their patience at this point.

Tigre-Racing was perhaps the best match of weekend. It is definitely worth a watch for the neutral. Exciting back and forth throughout the match. Retegui is on fire. I’m sure Boca could use him now. Blondel was rather poor today. Had some Blunder(s).

Never wanted Riquelme to run the team in the first place personally, particularly with all the drama in the locker room he caused in his final years. But the masses are blinded by his heroics on the pitch. Kind of Argentina in a microcosm, worshipping the cult of personality over results. Angelici looks like a genius compared to him.
