Does that mean 40 is a good number just because Poland is doing so? And why are they calling in so many? They called in 5 goalkeepers. I can tell you from experience that is a joke. There aren't enough reps to give 5 keepers a real look. So just why are they calling in so many? Perhaps they are calling in a large number of players just to get them a taste of what being in camp is like but I don't think for a minute that you can actually give solid training reps to 40 guys.
I think teams are calling in big groups because this is the last sustained amount of time people are going to have prior to Qatar. It's sort of the last chance for everyone to look at new faces, so a few teams have really gone with massive camps (like Poland going to 40). Whether or not that's a good idea I have no idea, but I would like to see us call at least a few more guys than we do typically.
If everyone were healthy, it wouldn't seem outrageous to me to call in say a number in the low 30s with four upcoming matches, one of them (Grenada at home) a clear chance for B-teamers and new call-ups to make their case for inclusion as time winds down on this cycle. But with as many regulars as are currently out, and with Berhalter wanting to keep things fairly exclusive to the guys that he sees as having a real shot to make the Qatar 23 or 26, I can see him not wanting to bring EVERYBODY. Most of the guys that are only there because one of our regulars is currently out aren't likely candidates for further inclusion before November.
The tricky thing is there will be regulars who get the summer off like Pepi. We don't know who that will be, but I assume there will be a couple. And then you have the uncertain injury status of McKennie and Richards which also opens up a few more slots. The main reason though everyone wants a bigger roster though is that we all have guys we really want to see get a look, and there realistically aren't that many spots available if they end up calling 26.
Yeah, its unclear what director Berhalter is going to go. We have a lot of players that are "insiders" but don't play a lot, who may be given an opportunity. At forward, guys like Hoppe, Dike, Sargent, Gioacchini, etc. may be given one last chance. Or are you going to look at outsiders like Vasquez, Wright, and players of that ilk. We don't know which direction Berhalter is going to go.
So best guess at the roster based on what we know so far. I'm assuming McKennie will be out now given he still hasn't returned to playing and I'm assuming Richards will be included for now. Have Dest, Reyna, Robinson, and Jedi also out with injury. Also assuming injury to Sargent and Pefok. Also assuming there's no chance Brooks is on the roster. GK: Steffen, Turner, Horvath, Johnson LB: Vines, Jones, Gomez RB: Yedlin, Scally, Cannon CB: Richards, Zimmerman, Long, CCV, EPB DM: Adams, Acosta, Sands CM: Musah, LDLT, Roldan, Williamson, Pomykal WF: Pulisic, Weah, Aaronson, Arriola, Morris, Mihailovic FW: Wright, Ferreira, Tillman Of course this is too big a roster so if numbers will are closer to what's typical you could remove Johnson, Gomez, Sands, and Pomykal. Vasquez and Sonora were the two other guys I"d like to see included but there's already not space as it is.
No judgement from me I don't know enough. I suspect it's too high since no one else is doing but who knows? Interesting that Brazil has already called in their team. Unless all or most are from Euro teams through for now it's a very different philosophy. I Also wonder if Berhalter has changed the focus of this window. He initially said that he wanted mostly those who've been so they can gel but with so many hurt maybe he'll do another B team for last chancers.
They just normally seem to announce their squads weeks early compared to us. They haven’t actually called them in yet, obviously guys are still playing out their seasons.
Maybe that' the difference. They pick them early and make changes if a player gets injured or sick. Perhaps the US feels it's smarter not to hack off those not called up until they have to. If someone gets hurt and not chosen the replacement doesn't even know.
USMNT roster for the four matches in June set to be released Friday (tomorrow). Expecting about 26 players to report to camp in Cincinnati ahead of June 1 friendly vs Morocco.— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) May 19, 2022 (And shouldn't the thread title say CNL, not UNL )
Tillman, Carter-Vickers and Wright are expected to be on the list.— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) May 19, 2022
I guess that's a little earlier than expected. I had seen early next week in a couple places. I'm a little disappointed at only bringing 26 guys, but as others have pointed out, with the injuries and guys being given a rest (Pepi), maybe most of the interesting fringy guys can be included on 26-man roster.
Yes, Berhalter already confirmed Wright and Carter-Vickers. German U21 coach says Tillman is switching to US program.— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) May 19, 2022
Richy Ledezma and Jo Gómez may be there too." I've seen the Jogo rumor floating around for a few weeks now, not from anyone I would consider too credible, but I guess we will find out tomorrow
I do think Gomez not being on Mexico's roster when they called in SO MANY guys is some reason to think he's coming to the US camp instead.
The rumors of Jedi getting post season surgery also adds to this, but I've haven't any else about him getting surgery other then that one rumor
You've got 32, Goff is saying around 26, so I'm taking off 5 and bringing 27... GK: Steffen, Turner, Horvath LB: Vines, Jones, Gomez RB: Yedlin, Scally, Cannon CB: Richards, Zimmerman, CCV, EPB DM: Adams, Acosta CM: Musah, LDLT, Roldan, Pomykal WF: Pulisic, Weah, Aaronson, Arriola, Mihailovic FW: Wright, Ferreira, Tillman If I had remove one more it would be one of the LBs since Scally can do both sides... I expect some of those guys to be left off in favor of say Aaron Long or whoever. It's ridiculous, as it was in the 3 game WCQ windows, that Gregg calls in 26 instead of 30 or in this case even 32.
That would be me. GB knows everything what he needs about RBs. I also doubt Richards is 100%. Totally agree about 26.
2 important things to factor in: berhalter said he was bringing his first team for the nl matches*, which leads to the second note- we pretty regularly add/drop within camps so i think theres very little chance the roster we start with is the roster we end with. *gregg frequently says things and doesnt actually do those things it would make sense that some of the "first team" guys would be brought in after the friendlies/before the nl matches- either due to injury or just managing workload/wanting to take a look at "new" guys. the injuries are hard to parse- but for example i could see pulisic not coming in initially after a long season and no offseason with us ever, or even a zimmerman who plays every club minute and played through the summer with us. and it would make more sense if wes is close to wait a couple more weeks. that said, this is what i would say is roughly the "first team", so i expect them at some point: gk steffen, turner, horvath rb yedlin, cannon cb zimmerman, richards, long lb dm adams, acosta cm musah, ldlt, roldan rw weah, arriola st pepi, ferreira lw pulisic, aaronson miles is obviously out out. no clue about dest, jedi, mckennie, reyna (initially or to be added later). gregg also said he planned to invite ccv and wright- i dont recall his exact wording on what we assume is tillman, if hes definitely in this camp or not. i mean, theres no reason he/they wouldnt be i just dont know if it was fully tipped like ccv/wright to be in/invited. so thats 23 not including injured "first team"ers (i have in my head that richards is gtg but i would be wrong on that). 4 cbs is light so i assume epb, though mckenzie is a possibility as well (if fit, i have no clue). man, i really have no clue on lb- vines, bello? throwing gomez in the deep end (if hes down)? i sorta think if gregg had any interest jones would have gotten a look by now but who knows? tolkien? i have zero confidence or reason to think scally is going to be in regardless of position. sands maybe? busio (most likely), pomykal and possibly williamson in the middle? mihailovic seems likely. i have 3 forwards (though pepi could probably use a break before even looking at form), though theres been talk (im not sure if greggs ever commented on this or not) that tillman is seen as a not-false-9, so he may be the third. zardes for that sage wisdom wouldnt shock me. so my prediction (that i barely endorse and im me) would be an initial roster of: gk steffen, turner, horvath rb yedlin, cannon cb zimmerman, richards, long, epb, ccv lb bello, vines, gomez/jones dm adams, acosta, sands (could be as cb) cm musah, ldlt, busio, roldan rw weah, arriola st ferreira, wright, tillman lw pulisic, aaronson, mihailovic thats 28 already (im not taking 26 as gospel). richards is probably still questionable, huh? him and one of the lbs would put me at that number. theres no reason to expect brooks or scally. pomykal/williamson seem to make sense just to make up numbers but greggs shown hes not super concerned with that. and i still think a couple or 3 could be added, most likely from the injury list, though. one last thought- other than richards i expect all these cbs and sands as gregg said hes going to be working in some 3atb. im interested to see if he sees/uses cannon in that mix...
random question- do you think tillman being "outed" as (presumably) the dual nat gregg directly referenced has anything to do with the roster announcement being moved up?
I think your roster is a pretty good guess... very near to mine. My changes have to do with: 1) Rumors about Gomez and Richie 2) Probably too soon for Richards 3) 4 CBs is too light AND I think we will be trying out a 3CB formation in June GK: Steffen, Turner, Horvath LB: Vines, Gomez RB: Yedlin, Scally, Cannon CB: Long, Zimmerman, CCV, EPB DM: Adams, Acosta CM: Musah, LDLT, Roldan, Richie WF: Pulisic, Weah, Aaronson, Arriola, Mihailovic FW: Wright, Ferreira, Tillman That is 26... with Scally being able to help out on the left and Cannon being able to play RCB in a 3CB formation. The only change I would want to make to the above list is to add Trusty as the 27th player at CB as I think he is very good at LCB in a 3CB formation. EDIT - Yes... Morris is likely in too. Hmm... how to make that 26? Perhaps list Djordje as an 8 and drop LDLT? It wouldn't be an indictment on LDLT. It was a long season for him and he got some good minutes in WCQ. So.... GK: Steffen, Turner, Horvath LB: Vines, Gomez RB: Yedlin, Scally, Cannon CB: Long, Zimmerman, CCV, EPB DM: Adams, Acosta CM: Musah, LDLT, Roldan, Richie, Mihailovic WF: Pulisic, Weah, Aaronson, Arriola, Morris FW: Wright, Ferreira, Tillman
