With the shocking nature of some of the hires this year I wouldn’t be completely surprised

From reading her bio (I don't know her at all), she has done well enough at a D2 school. Embry Riddle is an interesting place to recruit to...very limited majors and not easy-- so given how well she has done there makes me think she must be okay. Yes, they could get a bigger name but she has done well at d2.

I actually think that some d2 and d3 coaches who are succesful at those levels can make the jump easily. They are doing more with less money, less support etc.

It is late in the game to be trying to find a new coach, she is in the state and likely has good recruiting networks there. Let's give her a chance before we throw her under the bus.

 

If this coach was being hired at an FIU and FGCU I would agree. Mid major to upper mid major positions. However Florida is a top job and you would think they would have the ability to attract a candidate with a resume that reflects the position and possesses the recruiting connections to bring in the highest level athlete. However maybe they are onto something; Amato was a fairly well known name and look how that turned out.

Honestly a successful D2 or D3 coach is a better candidate than the second assistant at a big school. Who has done more actual talent evaluation, recruiting, team preparation, program management and administrative oversight: a D2 coach with limited budgets and reach or a second assistant at Stanford or ucla?

 

d2 are doing more with less? Against other teams who also have less. Certainly there are great coaches at D2 and D3 and all levels. But that argument is really pretty pointless.

Could you imagine The UF Gator Football team (or anyone at that level) hiring a D2 coach? The fans would lose their minds. I do not understand how supporting female sports equals hiring anyone but the most qualified coach? Wouldn't a greater show of support be to hire the best coach? USC football went out and recruited a coach who had played for numerous National Championships at OU and had been courted to be an NFL Head Coach. USC women's soccer hired a volunteer asst.

How that is equitable?

 

Florida Gators NAIA/D2 hire, yikes. If look at the projected new coaches record, looks great. Then you look at the history, she's been an NAIA coach most of her career there, the team didn't full transition to NCAA D2 until 2017. She has had two winning seasons is all at the D2 level since they transitioned to D2. 35-23-7 overall record. Not exactly awe inspiring for hire at a traditional top 40 division 1 program. Regardless of gender, you just hired a career NAIA coach, who has 4 years of NCAA experience.

Coaching wise, I'm sure she's experienced. Recruiting wise, wow, I am thinking most top 50 level recruits will see that and run the other direction from no big name hire. And they'll have no talented recruiting pool to pull from for 2023/2024 late in the game with three different coaching staffs in 3 years. Implosion! If looking the D2 route for success, grab the St Rose coach from NY with a few national championships under her belt and a much much better record and history of success. Oh well. If it happens no big deal. Will fit right in with the last years hiring decisions.

 

Did she win a national championship at the NAIA level or what's the furthest she's been?

 

Personally I think it’s a great hire. She has SEC coaching experience, head coaching experience and ACC playing experience. Time will tell but my prediction is it turns out a lot like the Michigan State hire.

 

Funny how you gender hawks aren't over on the men's forum grousing about head coaching hires that don't have the *right* kind of college coaching experience.......

Apologies on behalf of the UF AD that his new hire only checks 95% of the boxes you'd want in a head coach.....must be a scandal in the works!

I don't know much about this particular hire but Florida should clearly be competing for SEC titles and did once win a National Championship. Your competition at FSU just went and got the SEC Coach of the Year and you just got the D2 Sunshine State Coach of the Year from an engineering school.

Frankly - awesome for this coach and I hope it does work out but you could not be taking over a Florida program in worse condition than it is now.

Wonder what those dozen FSU kids that just got into the transfer portal are thinking now?? Wonder what MK will do....

What a joke! AD’s are making a mockery of womens college soccer at the moment. UCLA, Arizona, USC, and now Florida.

 

LOL....heaven forbid a woman with 20 years of winning experience get hired to lead a P5 program.

 

Honestly I don’t see why everyone is freaking out... yes, she doesn’t have D1 experience but so what? Soccer is soccer! I’m sure there are numerous D3 coaches who would do great at D2 & D1 and also D2 coaches that would do great at D1. We have also seen many P5 assistant coaches getting these jobs and ending up being failures. She has a lot of HC experience and has been decent , which to me warrants her a chance.

 

It’s hilarious. I could see this coach getting a mid major job with the resume she has. But one of the better jobs in the nation? Embarrassing!

 

As a Rutgers fan I feel like I can attempt to answer this. Coach Nemzer had been on the coaching staff at Rutgers for about 15 years and associate head coach since Rutgers joined the Big Ten.

She’s mostly known as a defense coach and led Rutgers to the all-time conference best GAA in 2017 (granted, Casey Murphy was in net but still) and has led the defense to no worse than a 0.67 GAA in all but one year since 2014 (and the outlier was 0.78 GAA in a year where Murphy redshirted) and coached three All-American defenders. She was the in-game coach for a couple games this year while Coach O’Neill was out and both went smoothly enough (4-1 win over Michigan, 5-2 win over Maryland).

Coach Nemzer has also coached a bunch at PDA and won a national championship there, so she has the recruiting connections and coaching skill, though thus far she’s mostly steered away from PDA kids.

I was definitely bummed when I heard she was leaving. Happy for her but really wanted her to stick around to be the Rutgers HC. But I get that she doesn’t want to wait around for that potential opening, since it’s at least 5-10 years off. Plus she has knowledge of the conference already which can only help. Maryland, IMO, got a good one.

 

Just wanted to say I agree with all of that about Meg Nemzer at UMD. She met Joe, had a child, and the UMD job came open. Her parents are like 30 minutes from UMD. She's working her arse off to find good players for next year. Spoke with her recently and my only concern is what many call work-life balance. For many coaches, there is none! Joe is going to coach as well as a Volunteer Asst at UMD and was just announced as an Arlington Club director which is the other side of the dc beltway in VA!
I hope they don't burn out and can manage it all. I think that's a big thing to think about for lots of coaches in all sports and why very many good coaches stay in D2 or D3, or at their mid-major d1. To actually raise their kids, even coach their own kids.

And about Florida, I love to see that Leadership and Head Coaching experience has some weight in some searches but I agree that the ERAU coach should be moving up to a USF or UCF and one of them should be the Florida coach. I'm also surprised Fotop didn't get it if she wanted it.

Curious if the coaching carousel was just as crazy this year in other sports.

 

In the SEC, Georgia hires national champ Keidane McAlpine and Kentucky is moving past the Ian Carry disaster and brings in a very experienced and proven winner in Troy Fabiano. Florida brings in a coach from a D2 school I haven't heard of. Wow.

Florida is trying to move on from their own self-created mess. They listened to the kids who wanted the previous staff fired, not saying there wasn't anything there. AD Scott Stricklin had to make a hire to placate the players and a winning program wasn't a priority for this hire at this time. Burleigh apparently helped with the process and she's a big team culture type of person so they brought in Bohon to focus on that side of things. But she probably doesn't have any strong connections with ECNL and GA programs and unless she brings in a top notch staff she will struggle on the recruiting side as no club coach would be comfortable sending their top-tier players to what was already a struggling SEC side and will most likely continue to struggle for the foreseeable future as their actions clearly show winning isn't a priority. Unfortunate as that program could be a top 10 caliber program and also unfortunate in that this will be part of Burleigh's legacy for what has otherwise been a damn good career for her. Kids will probably be the ones running that program and watch other SEC programs like Arkansas, Tennessee, South Carolina, Ole Miss, and soon to be Georgia and Kentucky, run past them.

 

Burleigh's legacy is secured, barring any revelations of abuse, racism, etc.

Also, some bold words. If Florida turns out to do pretty well, I hope to see you back on here throwing your hand up and saying "my bad, got this one wrong".
