Slow is the perfect way to describe this offense. This is like 3 or 4 games in a row where our offense moves around at glacial speed. Vasquez is old but he’s our best CAM.

    1. I’m tired of signing wingers and giving them the 10 shirt. Costa is good at create space for himself but his shooting hasn’t been great and his passes/crosses are useless when Chicharito is double marked.
    2. Efra needs to work on his game. You can’t be a successful pro and not know how to use your weaker foot. He cost us a goal today.
    3. I love bond, but fuuuudge.
    4. We’re really good at passing the ball around and then doing nothing with it except send in a very weak or over hit cross.
    5. We need a CAM. A real one. Rusnak on this team would have made us a cup contender.
    6. Start Jovelic. The kid is GOOD.

Didn't get to see this one live. Guess I'm glad, ha ha.

Watching the reply with the benefit of already knowing the result, I think it's a fair call. Sadly, this is about our level. To Vanney's credit, we've probably over-performed a bit given we have, basically, 1 DP-caliber player and only a few consistently good squad players beside that. I know there was a lot of talk about coming in and winning but escaping with a draw is probably a more realistic expectation for this team's quality (or lack thereof).

I think Vanney is probably a good coach but I have always been skeptical of him as a GM. It's just...there's no reason for our squad to be this underwhelming given our history, location and willingness to spend. We're not scoring with big signings and we're not getting enough from the academy (though I still rate Araujo pretty highly).

    What a craptastic goalkeeper error.

I still don't know what the foul was since I was watching in Spanish. So confused.

Dejan needs to start, and frankly I'd pull Costa. At least Cabral has some speed. Costa was his dribbling terribly best today. Yuck.

And I'm going to keep picking on him: what was up with Rayan's duels today? A bunch of lameness.

I'm also tired of Alvarez being meh.

In other news, Edwards is a find, eh?

    Points lost. Yuck.

One of the most infuriating thing this season is that we suck on set pieces. We never score on corners despite having some threats (Chicharito, Williams, Séga, DePuy, Raveloson...), it's short corners after short corners who don't lead to anything dangerous. And we suck even more on defensive set pieces : four of the seven goals we have conceded this season have been on dead balls (and I'm not counting the PK conceded in Seattle in these four goals).

Sell Alvarez while he still has value. Since the wondergoal at Charlotte, he's been meh overall. Low soccer IQ, slow, and no right foot. That's the story of his career so far.

That said, he's still better than the other two DP wingers and deserves to start, same thing for Grandsir.

Efra keeps showing flashes of wonder goals, sublime passing, vision, and the ability to take on defenders. Enough to entice us all, but he really needs to start stringing these things more consistently. The play where he should have gone with his right foot, it wasn't even that I was expecting a shot on goal, but more so that a pass across the goal would have resulted in a high goal scoring opportunity.

Edit: But keep forgetting he's still only 19, soon to be 20 years old! Reality is that if he played anywhere near how we expect and want him to play, he'd likely be in Europe and not on the Galaxy.

At one point I thought that Chicharito’s work ethic might rub off on Efrain, but doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. He’s 19 years old and he just . . . walks around. Watching Cheech constantly moving, making his little darting runs, and then seeing Efra literally standing still is frustrating.

Our offense kind of sucks which is no surprise when two of our DPs play worse than just a regular MLSer. We've scored 2 goals in the last 4 games including the cup. Defense is doing its job this season, but goals have dried up.

Cabral needs to be benched now. 0 league goals this season, 0 league assists as well. He is actually somehow doing worse this season than he did last.

Costa also looks like a poor signing. Lucky for us, we can choose not to sign him this summer. If we pick up Costa's option, I am going to be livid. At this point Costa would need to play amazing each game till July for me to even consider signing him permanently.

Grandsir should be start for us, and we should be looking to replace Costa with a DP #10 this summer.

re: Costa, trying to find the original deals on it, but my initial understanding was we signed a 6-month deal that would effectively finish out his loan from Juventus, meaning in summer he'd be a free agent. We then had an option to pick him up until next summer on a new contract, based on performance. I remember being pretty in favor of that deal, because we could always dump him in the summer when there's usually more movement anyway (albeit, perhaps not so much in a WC year).

But looking around I'm only seeing pieces saying the free agent 18 month contract has already been signed which if true -- yikes.

After 9 games played, we are tied with Dallas for first in fewest GA (7) in the West and 5 of those 7 were set plays.

I'm out of ideas on who we could pick up who can add goals.

Even Matt Doyle gets into the act
Why I'm not yet sold on Austin, worrying signs for Atlanta, loving Nashville's new digs & more from Week 9 | MLSSoccer.com

"The Galaxy, who had taken 10 points from their previous four games, looked frustrated for two big reasons. First is that Jonathan Bond flapped at a corner which gifted Marcelo Silva the only goal of the game, and second is that they’re still getting absolutely nothing from their wingers, including a pair of DPs in Kevin Cabral and Douglas Costa.

It’s to the point where we’re going to have to slap the bust label on Cabral*, who is flouting the David Gass Theorem of second-year improvement by registering a whopping zero goals and zero assists through 500 minutes. Costa, meanwhile, has 1g/0a in 460 minutes, and was yanked at the hour mark in this one after smothering a bunch of Galaxy attacks in the crib.

(*) Giving Cabral a five-year DP contract remains one of the most jaw-dropping front office decisions made by anyone in recent MLS history. He was a marginal Ligue 2 goalscorer!"

Yipes! He also has a long write up on Austin same link including this little bit on Austin's Champagne soccer:

We play Austin next and they lead lead the league in GF with 22. Unstoppable force meets immovable object.....

Did any of you see a post-match presser? I can't find any trace of one. Surely somebody said something.

I don't know what the fixes for the Cabral and the Costa will be but until then, Vanney needs to have the team at the very least play to the best of its abilities. Nobody is hurt. Nobody is missing except for Coulibaly and that was said to be medical condition, non-covid. How can we get through April practically unscathed but now we are playing the weaker teams, we start stumblimg about? Crappy RSL, for the love...

I am concerned with the pace of the team in general. No multiple mid-week matches are going with the exception of the OC so where is all this lethargy coming from. We have the passing down but we cant generate any goals off it because we do it so damn slow that everybody and their grandma know what we are doing or intend to do with the ball. That's easy to defend when you are already playing defensively against Galaxy. Very predictable.

Austin will be very telling where Greg and the guys are taking us, or not taking us. We play plodding like we did RSL and Austin will make a mockery of this team. The best striker in MLS in Driussi and the best MLS guy in assists in that Fagundez. They play at pace and simple, low number of passes and they are in your face blasting shot after shot.

Doyle may not be sold on Austin but I am. We may have a surprise in store for us in Texas if Greg and the guys can't figure out why they are on slow-mo.

    Highlight Time Folks

This game is an example of the type of game that made me so frustrated with Greg Vanney last year. He sees the issue on the team and recognizes exactly how to fix them but he often waits way too long to put the needed changes into effect and he shoots himself in the foot from the beginning by not starting the campaign with the clearly better player options all in the name of giving guys who struggle a chance to rise to the occasion.

Vanney knew dang well that Costa is still not 90 minute fit and that Cabral needs to be benched outright.

I want Costa to be ready too but had I known that the dude had to have his left hamstring heavily taped up I never would have put him in my starting lineup. This guy needs to be a super sub until that is 100%. You don't put him out against fresh legs. YOU JUST DON'T DO THAT!!!

But Cabral??? He not only needs to be on the bench, he should even sit out whole games at this point. If we could lose either player in the Summer, Costa would be the best loss as at least Cabral is younger. That being said, Costa actually bothered to get a goal and is at least dangerous on set pieces and has made some solid passes that could have lead to goals this season. Cabral has consistently failed to make the final key pass or shot in every single game he has played this season. This dude has actually regressed!! All the build up and none of the finish. FFS's if Blue Balls were a soccer player? Ughhh!!!!

Edison Cavani and Juan Mata will be available really soon; both are better players and are not as injury prone despite their ages. Mata could totally be this team's Center Attacking Mid and would give us more minutes than Vazquez for sure. Ughh!!!

Vanney you got to do better next game. DeJan must start. And until Vazquez is ready, play Sasha as CAM or Grandsir as winger and only sub in Costa if either starts to tire out in the second half of games. I am going to start calling for this every game until I see it.

    ---------------DeJan-------Chicha
    -----------------------Sasha
    ------Rayan----------Efra--------Delgado
    or
    ---------------DeJan-------Chicha
    Grandsir------Rayan-----Delgado----Efra

I really miss the days of Lie-weekly and Uncle Phil, it seems like they really cared about this team.

Klein just strikes me as a corporate suit, his rise from player to high level executive happened lightning quick and its obvious he is out of his element in running an organization like the Galaxy but he seems to say the right things to the people in charge and he keeps getting do overs.

I felt in the past the Galaxy had a direction in scouting, player development and they loved to make a splash signing, heck they were the first MLS team to start an academy and they had a great opportunity to be trail blazers and what did they do they brought in onalfo who actually set back the Galaxy player development at least 15 years, heck we can currently see how bad the player development is when Alvarez steps on the field he is a product of the academy and the dude can't even use his right foot to make a pass.

they bring in Vanney to right the ship and I think he is a good coach, the problem is they gave him a say in player signings and he has shown he is terrible at it and it has affected his coaching as he is playing guys that are struggling and to put it bluntly ass on the field because they were his big signings and screw trying to win with other guys he needs to justify his signings.

this team needs a GM a guy that will actually work on scouting and player development but it won't happen because it costs money and there is no way klein would do that because his ego won't allow it and would probably take away some control , that he currently has with management.

its most likely my frustration with this team and the boring style of soccer we've been subjected to, the last couple of week but I do not see a bright future for this organization at least from a fans perspective as we have nothing to look forward too, its a mishmash of players, the older players won't be here much longer and the younger ones don't show much promise or the ability to bring a sense of excitement to this team

its just a blah situation, heck Austin is in their second year and are fun and exciting, something a team with the history of the Galaxy should be year in and year out.

sorry for the long winded post I'm frustrated with this team and needed to vent.

    TL;DR Klein OUT!!

It's the same Galaxy organization/team it's been for the last 8 years. If this FO wants to win they will cut Costa and get a Jaun Mata or some other quality DP, again we passed on Rusnak, Illie Sanchez & Acosta this summer for Costa. I still give Vanney a pass, we have a completely re-made team from 18 months ago - I have faith he will bench Cabral (for the next 4 years). Scary things is - I believe this is Chich's last year in the contract? If he goes, we really have zero offense.

Why do you give Vanney a pass? While he has made some very good signings (Williams, Edwards, Delgado, Bond), some ok signings (Raveloson, Sega, Villafana, Vasquez, and does Joveljic go here when he never plays?) he also has made some atrocious ones. And the bad ones are for our most important contracts - our DPs.

He personally was the main driver behind Cabral's 5 yr Cabral U-22 DP contract. I also blame him for the Costa signing. Why him and not the FO? Well #1 is that when he came into our organization it was understood that one of his main duties was to clean up our roster building. #2 is that his job rests on results on the field so if he is worth his salt he would have identified some DP's he wanted our FO to pursue. He obviously didn't do a good job of this because Costa was a clear cut "lazy scouting" signing. How do you recognize "lazy scouting" signings? It's easy - they are has-beens who aren't wanted by their current team. Bruce would NEVER have allowed Klein to bring in a Costa type washout as a DP.

What scares me the most about Vanney is the serious lack of discernment shown by the Cabral and Costa signings. It doesn't take a lot of common sense to know that you don't commit 5 years to a kid who has been unproductive at Ligue 2 or that you don't give a DP contract to a older player who has both been non-productive and has also missed almost as many games as he's played.

Again I like Vanney as a person but, sorry to say this out loud, I don't think he is the sharpest tool in the shed. The fact that our defense made the same mistakes at the end of last season as it was making at the start shows me he doesn't know how to coach that aspect. We are better on D this season because of personnel upgrades, not because of coaching. The fact that we allow so many easy set piece goals shows me a lack of coaching. The fact that our offense look like they have never played together before shows me even more poor coaching.

Look I do like the fact that Vanney is a better recruiter than our previous coaches. But that is a low, low bar. And his X's and O's coaching is very poor as far as I can tell. So I just don't see him taking us to the promised land. If he does it will be because of trial and error improvements to our roster, not because of Vanney's coaching.

I agree with much of what you are saying - I'll give Vanney a pass for another year because the team is drastically improved in a short period of time and I don't see a better alternative. Doesn't mean we are where we need to be, but we are at least average, the defense looks great, and the platform to improve solid. Rome wasn't built in a day. Now he needs to be ruthless, cut Costa in the summer (use our one cut contract per year) and sign a quality DP. Bench Cabral and cut him next year.
The real problem here is and has always been Chris Klein. How he still has a job is criminal and destroying the franchise.

What IS Costa’s contract situation? A lot of different numbers and interpretations out there. Are we stuck with this guy until the summer, or are we stuck until 2023?

Stuck until 2023 with Costa and Cabral for 4 more years and heads gotta roll..

I think Vanney is a good enough coach to achieve in MLS, but I agree with skydog that his gameday coaching has left something to be desired at times. I also agree with the assessment that his signings have been mixed and I think this is where a GM with a more discernment and connections would help out.

The best teams in MLS have just passed the Galaxy by in terms of a lot of front office operations, but especially scouting. If you don't have a GM like Bruce who is extremely well connected throughout the soccer world, to an extent people perhaps under-estimate (this is a guy that made handshake deals with Nigel de Jong and Ashley Cole for example), you really need a top-notch team of scouts and analysts looking for good talent. It's an area we've really fallen behind in and signing Michael Stephens isn't exactly inspiring tons of confidence.

Prolly not our cup of tea with history of knicks and knocks but Chicago bringing Mueller back from Scotland
Paul Tenorio on Twitter: "Chicago Fire is bringing Schaumburg, Ill.-native Chris Mueller home from Hibs, per sources. Orlando City will receive GAM and other assets for Mueller's MLS rights. Verbal agreement in place, paperwork to be finished, but Mueller could be available to play this weekend. #cf97 https://t.co/8RHrZYiu0R" / Twitter

Still, he was always underrated at Orlando. He wasnt all that bad for Hibernian when he played but didn't stand out over his competition either. He would have been a Dejan type for us, I think.

Hoppe came in at 88' in Mallorca - maybe team just showing prospective buyers he is fit to play?

I had to chuckle, w!hen you said that Bruce Arena would have never "allowed" Klein to bring in a old washout as a DP. I guess you forgot about Steve Gerrard who was clearly toast in his last season at Liverpool.

There was also that wonderful 5 year contract of Gio Dos Santos that Klein and company forced on Bruce in 2016. He was certainly productive at Villarreal in 2015 with 1 goal and 3 assists in 26 games. Makes Kevin's 7 goals and 5 assists in 29 games seem unproductive. Guess Bruce lacked common sense.

Scary stuff. It appears NOBODY is minding the store. No collective in the FO which includes Vanney and ownership. Somebody should have vetted that Cabral contract. Somebody should have vetted that Costa contract. Nobody has learned the lessons of the Gerrards and the Gios. The band just plays on.
