You might be interested to know what America is planning:

Perez is clearly stating that Houston will be the home for America-USA and that, as is the case in Mexico, in the U.S. they will beat Chivas in an easy fashion.

Of course, all Americanistas will be elated with the news...

Congratulations, Houston. We'll see you there... :)

I can't speak Spanish. Is there any indication of when?

I also cannot read Spanish. Does it indicate how they intend to get a team? In other words, do they expect to get an expansion slot or to buy and move an existing team? Thanks.

Loose translation. Sorry I'm rushing to my office:

Visiting the Ceforca (sort of academy for young players) Perez said that officialy Houston will be the Aguilas home and formal announcement will be made in a couple of weeks.

"We are very advanced in the project and it seems is going to be Houston. We've decided on that city but we're still evaluating the economic side.

"We would like to be ready for April but need to wait decissions taken by Televisa (owner of America).

Perez explained that America-Houston could be reinforced with up to 4 players in the team and one would even be Cuauhtemoc Blanco.

Coach will be somebody with a yellow heart as well as those directing the team.

No more details as to expansion or new team...

the article doesn't mention expansion or moving a team, just that they should be ready to announce in 2 weeks. It did say that they WON'T play in 2005

Who the f' knows what they'll do. I doubt it would be moving a team, as that would entail a lame duck season. Who knows if San Antonio will also be an expansion team. Or Rochester. Or OKC.

This "2 weeks" thing w/ CA is like "60-90 days" for Metros and harrison stadium project.

Isn't funny... at the same time Republic of Texas was replying to your post on the "Mexico rooting issue", you were posting on this thread...

Anyway, greeting to all the UCLA soccer fans... :)

    I won't allow this.

Major League Soccer is SUPPOSED to be the premier soccer league in the US specifically for Americans. It is NOT supposed to be a farm-league for rich Mexican teams. If the Mexican owners want to get in on MLS, then they should create a NEW franchise, like what Checketts did in Salt Lake (minus the ReAL thing).

I still hate Chivas USA for that reason... why couldn't Vergara just make a new team? Chivas USA is unoriginal too.

    idiot on the loose...

Dear God, please, please. Not again. Why must we go through this every frickin' time there's some news about foreign investment? Why? Why?
Well, good then. So, when can CA expect a check for something between 15-25 million dollars?
You forgot to add Chivas USA, which is a NEW team in MLS, which is a league that owns all the players, which means that any MFL team, no matter how intimate their relations w/ an MLS team, has to go through the normal channels.

So many idiots, so little time...

I don't see anywhere in the article a statement that they won't play in 2005. It does say they would like to play in 2005, but need to wait for decisions to be made first.

Was there ever any chance they would play in 2005 anyway? I thought that window was long past.

O.k., it doesn't say that directly, but the use of the imperfect subjunctive (quisieramos) makes it a contrary to fact statement.

Reading between the lines makes me bet that 2005 is out of the question.

    Gotta go back to work...

We're sure Perez was simply speculating. MLS wouldn't let them start playing this year. Too late for that. And, in any case, formal announcements have not been made by the MLS MONARQUIA....

'till we see it in the MLS page we'll patiently wait...

I sympathize with your concerns, but it's all about money, money, money. CA has it, MLS wants it. Chivas USA has opened up the floodgates for this to happen over and over and over and over again. Not necessarily with Mexican teams, but foreign investors. MLS is interested in becoming a financially viable league, not a bastion of pro-USA soccer. What have they done in the past year to make us think otherwise?

Do you own an army, by chance?

Can you define what exactly is an American? Was MLS created for American citizens only? US passport holders?

Come on. MLS needs to make money and if Club America thinks they can make money in MLS and MLS thinks adding a Club America team will help strengthen the league, why shouldn't CA join MLS? Give me one reason based on pragmatism and reality and not emotion.

Who do you think is going to have better attendance this season: Chivas USA or Real Salt Lake. Which team will make MLS more money? End of story.

I wanna be there ringside... er, I mean in the front row the first time Franchino and Blanco clash. The result will probably set back American/Mexican relations a hundred years.

Actually, I really like the idea of major clubs from other countries setting up a franchise in MLS, as long as they play by the rules in terms of salary caps, foreign player limits, etc. I think it makes the league seem more interesting and "cosmopolitan". It also makes for more exciting rivalries.

    Man. That's like reading a Nostradamus quatran(sp).

Didn't we constantly hear similiar 'any day now' stuff from Chivas until they finally made it official?

Incidently..........Puma? anybody else? Can I interest you in a city by the river....

All we hear on BS.com is: MLS needs SSS's, MLS needs better marketing, MLS needs better higher-profile players...yeah, exactly, but to get there, what MLS needs is money.

From all of the rumors that I've heard, CA is gonna bring in money...and probably lots of it. And probably more media power. What exactly would the downside be??

They can't play in 2005 period. Why?

Relocation: None: SJ is staying put for 2005 season. Kansas City is also staying put for 2005 season (the announcement was made like a few days ago)

Expansion: Not for 2005. Expansion Draft came and passed. SuperDraft came and passed. In addition, there is no way they can get everything in order in just 2 months for a new team (marketing, training camp, finding players, etc...)

We have been hearing Club America USA a little more than 12 months ago. If they do come to MLS, it would be after the 2005 season either with relocation (from SJ or KC) or through expansion in 2006 with another city (Seattle, Rochester, San Antonio, Philly or whoever that can write a $10 mil check and have a plan for SSS).

As for Houston, Reliant is a very nice stadium but it's huge. However, with its roof, it can hold the noise in and provide a better atmosphere with 15k. Though, I hope that in the long-term, they will build a SSS for the team.

"quisiéramos" = "we would like to"
"hubiéramos preferido" = "we would have preferred to"

So, had he said "hubiéramos preferido" ("we would have preferred to"), then I would agree with you. Since he said "quisiéramos", however, I think it is still a possibility... at least in his mind. I just don't see it happening in 2005, regardless of what he may have said.

Basically, my take anyway, is that Club America is not all too happy that Chivas got into MLS first. Club America wants to be in MLS before Chivas, if not then at the same time.

It's a Mexican rivalry thing. Keeping up with the Jones/Chivases.

What a refreshing day when somebody --reminding me of my Jesuit professors-- quotes the "imperfect subjunctive".

I haven't heard that since the time we recited "Cicero, Virgilius and Marcus Aurelius".

And how do you intend to stop it, Mr. Garber? And also, Checketts was not a foreign investment, so he is irrelevent.
