1) The other refs just standing there doing nothing p*sses me off. 2) The camera-person laughing as the ref gets taken down also p*sses me off.
They should all be arrested and charged. That kind of conduct is absolutely disgusting. And the fact that nobody was willing that official is sad.
And then there is the irony of the incident happening at a Christian School. (I understand they were just renting out/loaning out their facilities...just ironic)
One should note and PAY ATTENTION to the fact that this was an unsanctioned league not affiliated with the AAU, nor any other sanctioning body. Be ye ware, of ever doing games with leagues that are not USSF, AYSO, or NFHS affiliated.
One other lesson is to GTFO. When they advanced on him, he took a few steps away. He then started backing up and was getting backed into a corner. The moment you feel threatened, bolt. If your car is the only safe place, get your bag and go. Run. If there is security or another secure place, leave your bag and get there immediately.
I've only had to terminate two games in my long officiating "career" due to either player and/or fan behavior. One was a club travel game and another an Over 30 Adult match...both affiliated. I no longer do unaffiliated matches (and don't recommend others do for obvious reasons), but did unaffiliated adult games in the past that involved former MLS and college players where the poor behavior never matched what I've seen in so-called sanctioned leagues. The one adult game where I terminated it in the 2nd half was actually continued at the point where I stopped it (long story why). It's not as if assignors and the league have "your back" in a sanctioned competition (yes, there is the insurance aspect). People will behave in an uncivilized manner whether you are wearing your USSF badge or not.
This thread prompted me to look; the Roseville, CA ref assault perp entered a not-guilty plea on like December, nothing since, though he was due back in court in January (?). https://www.kcra.com/article/soccer...eree-in-roseville-to-appear-in-court/38461213
Case was continued in January and again in March, next appearance is April 26th. https://webportal.placerco.org/eCourtPublic/?q=node/45/1094742
Here's the deal, if you get assaulted by an affiliated team, you have insurance, a place to lodge a grievance that will be seen to, and the certainty that the offenders will never again sully a soccer pitch that you are officiating. having said that I will admit to have reffed unaffiliated games in the past.
What does liability insurance have to do with getting assaulted? It only protects you if you get sued for negligence.
Referees have accident insurance through USSF provided that they are participating in a sanctioned match or event. Please note that this does NOT cover scrimmages. As to liability, referees and other sports officials possess qualified immunity to liability, and while possible, it is extremely difficult to prove recklessness, or mal intent on the part of a sports official. As well, we are shielded by the USSF from personal liability in sanctioned events
