This SOT-MNC FA Cup game may make Mike Dean say, “Heck with this, I’m done.” The last 12 minutes have been nothing but 70m sprint repeats. Great to watch from a neutral view, but Dean’s being run ragged. Also, good penalty call. Dumb Southampton challenge to trip Jesus a yard inside the right side of the area. You have to call that one.
Speaking of throw ins: Anyone else see Taylor make a call on the throw in about the 82nd minute in TOT/WHU? Nonverbally: you lifted your foot, what do you want me to do? Maybe this will work: https://photos.app.goo.gl/p9HxayeuEqMbzyDf8 Cheers, Mi3ke
Referee Mike Dean has announced he is retiring at the end of the season. Here’s a video celebrating his first 100 red cards. Each one dished out with his special, singular brand of panache, hubris and disdain. pic.twitter.com/xOXVDppimm— Men in Blazers (@MenInBlazers) March 21, 2022
I rewatched the Michael Oliver classic from last month where he gave Martinelli the two cautions in the same passage of play. For the obvious second yellow card, just for logistical reasons and my own knowledge, would you guys file this UB under SPA or reckless?
Well, he had a very good run, and did every top match possible in England. His international career was not spectacular, but unfortunately for him he was eclipsed by Webb and then Clattenburg during his time on the FIFA list. Maybe some of the other graybeards will follow his example and get out before their performances begin to decline anymore than they already have. PH
It feels like referees with "character" will become a thing of the past. We had Marco Rodriguez, we have Dean and Mateu Lahoz, but they won't be around for much longer.
There were many more in past years as well, both in England and other countries. It seems that those personalities are selected out in the the Darwinian quest for compliance and uniformity. PH
Question. I've seen this a couple times in the last couple of weeks. Sorry don't remember what games though. (probably 1 was an Arsenal game) Anyway, a player was injured and a YC was given, but the Ref still made the injured player leave the field. Is this just something they are doing in the EPL? Or has there been a change to the Laws I missed? Thanks.
No change. Best we can tell is that the PGMOL is taking the "quickly treated" part to be very quick to a point where we've never seen a player allowed to stay on that I've seen.
Seems like a waste of time to me. The Ref is waiting for the player to get up (unless they are stretchered off), and then instead of getting going, they wait for the player to go off the field. Then have to let them back on. Oh, well, just doesn't make any sense to me. But what do I know? Thanks though.
Personally I'd love to see a player or manager actually raise a stink over it. Of course that would require them to know the laws.
Referees could soon start training with clubs, thanks to a proposal put forward by Ralf Rangnick. Some interesting comments from managers, including "The group added that the 'clear and obvious' terminology around the use of VAR does not help and needs to be reviewed." http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-revolution-Officials-train-clubs-season.html

Penalty given correctly by VAR in the Liverpool-Watford match today. Very blatant and obvious "rugby style" hold/takedown during a right side corner kick. The referee (Attwell) could not see it because of his standard stationary position 20 yards out and his focus elsewhere. This could be corrected if a deeper and wider position is used during thee corners, as was previously the case. This foul is then in his line of vision, and easily seen without VAR intervention. Or maybe it doesn't occur at all because the defender knows he will be seen. PH
So is this a guy notorious for being a poor referee or something? I don't know him, and it's good they fixed it, but his VAR penalty signal was pretty weak lol. Usually the ref makes a big demonstrative point towards the spot. He just did an open palm pointed up nonchalantly pointing over there.
Did anyone see McTominay's caution for his tackle on Madison in the Manchester United vs. Leicester game today (49min). How on earth have we got to the situation where fouls like this, and the Costa Rica vs. Canada example, are not clear red cards for the powers-that-be?

Interesting that Tierney's usage in these big games (at least as the ref) has slowed down fairly significantly.
