I was just wondering if any of y'all knew of, or are currently in, a soccer league. I'm turning 22 in 3 weeks and can't find a U-23 league. I signed up for the Irving Soccer League when I was 18 but school and work messed up my practice time and the cut off age is 19 . Can anyone help?
My fat ass has been wanting to join NTPSA for a couple of years, now. Unfortunately, money matters and college have hindered that prospect. Oh well, perhaps I can join next year... One question I've always had was if this is a real competitive league or if recreation-type players can also join. Honestly, I haven't set foot on a pitch and played in 12 years. If anyone can help me out with info. on that, I'd appreciate it.
I'd say you can pretty much find whatever you are looking for. From the Open Division 1 team that made it past a few MLS teams in the USOC to the guys who enjoy the game but still use it as a prequel to drinking a few beers. Depending on age, you can do 30+, 40+ and maybe even 50+.
It's a serious league but also lots of fun. I wouldn't call it recreational necessarily, there is lots of physical play, slide tackles, full contact, (serious) injuries. It is not the league you are looking for if you just want to run around and get some touches and exercise but don't want to be kicked hard, pushed down, run over, chopped down, etc. The league does a good job kicking problem players and hotheads out of the league, it is very good natured the above is just to say it is not nancy football. FYI both Arlington and FW have men's leagues as well. You can play in any league no matter where you live but the associations cover various areas and the play in those areas is restriced to that geographic area. Definitely get off the couch and into the league and play, it it lots of fun. Don't let the above scare you away, I just want you to know it is a serious league, good natured, but don't come expecting a no shin guards training session. At 23 you will have to play on an open division team. As it is likely too late to join a team I suggest you look at the schedule, find the games, and go watch the open division teams from the lower divisions (7-9) to the top divisions (1-2) and see where you think you can play. Make an effort to meet those teams captains as that is the best way to get on a team. Don't rely on just sending your information into the league office. Lastly, it is not so simple that the lower/older you go the quality and skill level goes down. There are over 30 teams that could play in open divisions and open division teams that would be bad in Over 40 (though none of that applies to the top divisions, the quality of which is shockingly good!). P.S. - these are my thoughts from being on an Over 30 team for 5 years.
Ok, that settles it. I am a rec-style player, but I'm also not looking to be a big baby. I don't mind that rough, physical play and I'll actually look forward to it. My lack of speed due to Jack-In-A-Box syndrome will have to be fixed, but I must say that I enjoy a good challenge and NTPSA seems to be it. I've been to their website, but a lot of the info seems vague to me. How do players get put on teams and how much is it for individual players to join?
Have you checked the Inferno website www.the-inferno.net for their forum on NTPSA teams and Indoor soccer teams? They have multiple teams at all levels.
At the very bottom of http://www.ntpsa.org/ you can check "Player Looking for a Team", hit sumbit, and fill out a form. Your name will be placed on the list of players looking for a team. You may get some calls, you may not. The best way is to use http://www.ntpsa.org/ to look at the various schedules, go to some games, try to find the level/division you think you can play in, and try to meet those team's captains. I recommend the second way as if you get a call and are asked to come out and scrimmage with a team and you are not anywhere near that level you might get a bad taste in your mouth for the league and/or that team might not be a good fit. Better to do your homework first. I'd do both to cover all bases. You can tell from the various schedules what teams are playing where (park, field, time) and what jersey color they will be wearing.
