The soreness only sets in the next day. Also I use a pretty high quality running shoe, Brooks Glycerin 19. What benefit does switching shoes provide?

I'm so tired of seeing this, makes me feel so bad. As far as youth leagues in our area go, one of the expensive areas of the country, they usually max out at around 70/50 for the top U17-19 NPL level games. You guys make it sound like getting paid $90-100 for a position should be normal and we're getting bent over here. We need a union

When soccer came back after the lockdown, the state league wanted teams on opposite sides of the field: team bench on the AR's side of halfway, then a 20-yard buffer zone at midfield (coaches could be in that area), then parents down on the other end of the field away from the AR. This spring season I think that decree has either been officially rescinded or largely ignored. But when I walked up to AR a U18G game, I noticed that the teams were diagonally across from each other. One of the coaches said something like "Oh, we had already put our stuff down and didn't want to move." No big deal. Not too many parents anyway at that age group. So out of habit, I take up my spot in front of the team bench. The game starts and I'm looking out at the field and something seems a little off. I figure I'm just used to being on turf fields and the lines on the grass field we're on are a little crooked.

About three minutes in we have a corner kick. I'm standing at the midfield line when I realize "Whoops, I just made my center run a reverse diagonal!" I'm not sure if the other AR made the same mistake, or he noticed as the game started and got down to the other side of the field to cover for me. I apologized to the CR at halftime and we flipped sides to get things back to normal.

Why put this in the "best story" thread? Because as far as I can tell, the three of us were the only ones who noticed!

We had several local referees that always run a reverse diagonal. At some local tournaments, referees are asked to run reverse on alternate games. I sometimes run diagonal to keep ARs out of the mud or out a bad sun OR because I think I need the practice.

Did a D1 women's college game. R is a gal from two time zones away, flown in just for this game. Turf field. Her pre-game ends with "Oh, and I do a reverse diagonal. It's just my thing." Gee, thanks. You just made this game harder to do, for no particular reason.

We get 74/49 for U-17/U-19 and I personally thought that's a good gig...

The regional league I've been doing games for breaks down like this:

    10U...1-Referee System...$45...30 minute halves...7v7
    11U-12U...$50/$35/$35...30 minute halves...9v9
    13U-14U...$60/$40/$40...40 minute halves...11v11
    15U-16U...$70/$45/$45...40 minute halves...11v11
    17U-19U...$80/$50/$50...45 minute halves...11v11

This is way more than my area:

    U09/U10 - $30 Center
    U11-U12 - $30 Center $16 AR
    U13-U14 - $35 Center $20 AR
    U15-U16 - $45 Center $25 AR
    U17-U19 - $50 Center $30 AR
    H.S. is a bit more

There is mention of a pay raise at end of 2022 -- I'll believe it when I see it.

So yeah, I'd love to be getting $80 for U17.

$75 is low for U17-19? ECNL pays 75/50 nationally for that age. I think GA pays like 80/60. Should they be paying the MLSN rate of 100/60?

    Great news from Italy [IMG]
Kateryna Monzul is a FIFA referee from Ukraine [IMG]
Italy has opened its doors and invited her to continue refereeing in the Italian leagues. She will referee Inter Milan v Sampdoria in the Women Serie A on March 20th.
"The doors to the Italian refereeing community are always open for those match officials who are going through difficult times in their lives. We are delighted to welcome Kateryna to Italy", said Alfredo Trentalange, chairman of the Italian referees association.
"I'm beyond words and so grateful for this moving gesture by the Italian FA. Kateryna is an incredible referee and deserves this. Thank you Italy for the solidariety you're showing to the Ukrainian referee community", said Andriy Pavelko, President of the Ukrainian FA.
    Welcome to Italy, Kateryna

Picked up a 5 game set on Friday. My son is playing in the same showcase at 8am, so I figured since I’m taking a day off from work, I might as well pick up games. Might have to pack a spare pair of socks or two to keep my feet as fresh as possible. Oh, and a chair

Man this is BS. We are getting ripped off in all our leagues over here. So you guys expect the center to get 70, 80, 90 for 13, 14/16, 17+? And what does the AR get then?

This really stinks. Like my example from above, ECNL is a national rate and even that doesn't hit those benchmarks. I think our area most leagues give the AR the amount of the half length (but usually 50-55 for the AR at 17-19 NPL type) and the CR gets like 10 up to 20 more.

Geography matters. Just like employers often have different pay scales in different cities, economic reality is going to force referee pay rates up in some places where it doesn't in others.

usually half the CR and sometimes 5 dollars more than half. But, we get 60 for solo small sided now. You can do 5-6 a weekend and it’s 360 dollars.

Take a deep breath. Everytime Rufus posts his area's pay rate people freak out. (I know I did.) He is in New Jersey. A ref I know from NJ told me that even with those high numbers, they cant get new teenagerd refs because the leagues can't compete with the kids' weekly allowance!

Yes, geography matters. You could probably even graph pay gradients away from cities larger than 5 million out to less populous regions.

Geography matters on a micro-scale too; I get the sense that youth club rates in Eastern PA (Barciur?) are more or less fixed, but around here each hosting club sets its own rates. They can be pretty dissimilar. Interestingly, there is a degree to which SES is inversely proportional to the club's rates. Similar to what I found with wrestling snack-bars, back when Segundo was a youth grappler.

Our leagues are usually paying 40 for CRs for the small sided games. This is ridiculous.

Obviously I know how economics work, they pay what will get refs to their games, etc. It's very frustrating specifically because our leagues are in more financially well off places than New Jersey, a very high COL area, believe me, so it feels like getting really ripped off here. Not like I'm in some rural state where I still want top money.

But at the end of the day, there's no use complaining because it's voluntary work. If I don't like the pay, I shouldn't do the games. But then that means not doing any games.

Fact. All across Alabama it is $45/$30 for U12 9v9, but in Metro Atlanta it is $28/$17 at worst and $30/$20 at best. And there, I see the vehicles in the parking lots. My Camry stands out as the exception.

Yes, that's correct. Our fees are posted on our website: https://www.epysa.org/referee-fees/ and they are set in stone for both club league games and for tournaments, if tournament has 30 minute halves. This has not always been the case - when I started reffing in 2011, this was the first season they were doing this. Previously, it was like what you are describing.

Funny story: We have one club in the area which fought tooth and nail to not pay the full fees but they played 35 minute halves. So they played a "pro rated" full fee - somewhere between the tournament and full fee. Finally, the state came down on them and said "you either pay the full fees or you do not get our sanctioning". So, they now pay full fees for 35 minute half games :)

I have friends buying their kids a Mercedes as a high school graduation gift. I haven't heard the term "allowance" in a while, however, folks Venmo money to their kid without any strings attached. In that case, you think Johnny wants to run the line in cold weather on a Saturday morning?

I don't mean to pile on, but one of the longest running tournaments in the state is paying $75 for CR and $55 for AR for U19 matches this weekend that are only 60 minutes long (no, it's not a typo). Why? They could no longer get enough qualified referees. Even for this event, they didn't have enough until this week.

Seeing the rates posted here are nauseating. I would never do it.
