I was agreeing with the OP’s post that a US win here is underwhelming. Given the superior US roster versus El Salvador roster, no way should the final score be a mere one nil. Reffing wasn’t the reason why a supposedly superior USA didn’t curb stomp this El Salvador team
While it was frustrating for long stretches of this match, Matt Turner had nothing to do. So, there’s that at least.
The stats I see say the US committed 18 fouls and El Salvador 17. Let's cut the "ref let them get away with fouling" crap.
Agree. Also don't think he should be here. He has like 200 minutes in the past year. Asking him to play in below-freezing temperatures in qualifiers is dumb.
Ref was horrid, as was the game. Unfortunately another "result" that means Berhalter will continue to keep his job while running this squad into the ground. We have the best attacking players the US has had in as long as I can remember, and we have had more than 2 goals once in the last 14 matches. Glad we can beat the second worst team in the Hex by 1-0 at home, but what happens when we have to go on the road against a good team in the World Cup?
Only watched the 2nd half after the goal, but man, that was ugly. Not surprisingly ugly, as this is simply what the US team is now, but ugly. I like the "we need to learn to play better and create chances". This is what the team is, this is Egg's system. Great defensively, poor offensively, manage to scrape out a slim 1-0 or 2-1 win. Better than missing the WC at least. And maybe playing better teams will be better for us, much like the domination of Mexico last match? Looking for silver linings here.
Lol it won’t be a wake up call, the Baghdad Bobs will be like “what are you complaining about we won!” 100% guaranteed
There is, was, and will be, a 0% chance that Berhalter would get fired unless we actually failed to qualify. He is the only person that will be managing this team in Qatar. Hopefully he isn't doing it at home in 2026.
What game did you watch? Ferreira was awful overall. He had a couple nice passes, but was woefully out of place positionally (Berhalter's fault). Missed an easy chance in front of goal, and had another couple terrible passes. He was the weak link on the team tonight and didn't belong on the pitch. I think you missed how poorly he played. Otherwise he wouldn't have been the second man subbed out. Bottom line.
Well maybe I am trying to be optimistic. Certainly a lot of the players (CP, Wes, Dest, in particular) held on to the ball for one or two dribbles too many before passing. That is fixable. There was no one there for second balls on clearances. Not sure if that was a Musah or Wes issue, but also fixable. Finishing remains a problem. Zardes was Zardes, each chance so close but yet so far. So was Ferreira. Crosses were meh; that should be fixable. If Pepi is in the middle maybe they look better. I am optimistic.
Last night I dreamed that Pulisic signed on loan for Celtic. It wouldn't surprise me if it came true.
Got our goal, subbed off Pulisic (which I approved), and then... played like relative crap. Three points in qualifying are three points in qualifying, but this was unsatisfying. However, I'm sure if someone calculates the xG, it'll look like it should've been 2-0 or better.
That's nonsense. He got forced the ball in tight spaces and did well overall in escaping and finding a teammate because of his touch and vision. Not only had the assist but another key pass. Beautiful switches. Found Pulisic in the box & the trailer far side. He's playing in front of an MMA mf that doesn't create and around Pulisic not making runs in behind and hero balling when he could interplay. And he pressed pretty well. So it was just the missed shot & other one that he mostly created. He got subbed because he's an attacker. Attackers get subbed. They all did.
Understood. But that dude really is a dumbass. Does simply stating facts count as a personal attack now?
Paul Carr just posted it, you're close. Basically 3-0 xG. Aside from the Mexico games, his team consistently underachieves offensively. Berhalter and his lineups are a major issue.
They did & you weren't generous enough apparently. Didn't always feel this dominant, but... 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/WJz3bfE6Aq— Paul Carr (@PaulCarr) January 28, 2022 2.98 sounds really flattering. 2 sounds about right. I'd be interested where that came from. The one from Ferreira was probably over +.5 and maybe ARob's chance. The rest weren't great chances or plentiful. We started off slow and really faded. In between it wasn't like we were dominant.
