Per source, hearing that D.C. United have received an offer for teenager Kevin Paredes from #VFLWolfsburg. The MLS side has reportedly valued the player in the $8-$9 million range. Talks ongoing between the clubs from what I gather. #DCUnited #wolfsburg— Kristian Dyer (@KristianRDyer) January 22, 2022
He isn't going to fetch 8 million during this window. Not surprised to see clubs in for him but that would be an insane amount of money for Kev right now
You would be stupid as hell not to take that money, we don’t have the capacity to build him up as a player, just get already performing players with the money instead.
Totally agree. I can still see why Arriola might want to go to a team that plays more like Berhalter's style, but can't see why United would want to get rid of the player who, along with Paredes, seems most suited to Losada's system. FWIW, Arriola's images have been scrubbed from the United website, although he's still listed on the roster, of course.
Great - if these transactions take place we will be without two of our three best providers/assisters, leaving only Julian Gressel. Please tell me he's staying.
Gressel is basically out only remaining player of value. Not a single other player would capture any decent offer.
Out of curiosity I checked out DCU on transfermarkt. Their numbers are created by feeding into an algorithm data about the league + player stats so I wouldn't give too much credence to the specific numbers but I do think it's a reasonably good indicator of relative value. Here's their top ten at DCU: Kevin Paredes $4.40m Julian Gressel $3.30m Edison Flores $2.75m Ola Kamara $1.65m Donovan Pines $1.65m Steve Birnbaum $1.32m Nigel Robertha $1.32m Russell Canouse Russell Canouse $1.10m Moses Nyeman $1.10m Brendan Hines-Ike $770 (I removed him but note that they still list Arriola at #2 as that deal is not done. Value $3.30m, same as Gressel.) https://www.transfermarkt.us/d-c-united/startseite/verein/2440/saison_id/2021 Also noteworthy (and rather depressing): DCU's roster is ranked as the 23rd most valuable of the 28 MLS teams. The only teams ranked lower are Miami (24), Houston (25), Chicago (26), Charlotte (27), and Real Salt Lake (28) https://www.transfermarkt.us/major-league-soccer/startseite/wettbewerb/MLS1
Sounds like transfermarket is a load of shit? Maybe useful for who is worth more as you said, but prices are wildly awkward. For me the top 4 are the only ones that would capture any offers, the rest won't.
Apparently a very quiet weekend. B&RU reporting the possible purchase of Rojas is dead. The Arriola deal still not final and only Dyer reporting about interest in Paredes with no dollar figure attached to the Wolfsburg offer (if it really occurred). Opening match is about 1 month away and the crickets are becoming louder.
Going into every off season, I have an expect nothing expectation for the club, so this isn't really disappointing, it's more what I expect. Roster construction has been a mostly haphazard exercise for DCU the last few years and I suspect the overhaul Losada needs is not happening at any kind of reasonable pace. The only upside is possibly some academy guys will get chances to play and develop. It definitely seems like Neyman is going to get his chance. Have to start wondering about Yow if he doesn't show something this year. Whether or not they pan out is an entirely different story.
What's missing is any reaction from Losada about the club's action/inaction over the offseason. I would expect him to be pushing for new players, but if he is we aren't hearing about it. It's possible that Arriola and Paredes could stay, but if they go without adequate replacements under contract then the season will depend mostly on journeymen and promotions from Loudoun. If that prospect materializes, why would Losada stay?
Meanwhile Orlando just bolstered their forward situation with Facundo Torres, 21 year old prospect from the Uruguayan first division.
Because he's under contract? I do share your concerns, though. I hope he doesn't end up feeling like he was sold a bill of goods regarding DCU's ambitions.
You have to think that just about everyone knows we're a clown car club. The agents have to know. If you're an up-and-coming prospect who gets linked with DCU, why would you come? Unless you think this is the only way you're going to get to the US and get a green card eventually, why? It's not like we'd be offering more salary than the next guy. Rooney got sold and figured it out in under a year. Gressel came for the money because ATL didn't have the GAM. I wonder how their budget looks today. I have to think Losada is starting to figure it out.
