Correlation does not equal causation. It’s equally as likely that the Rapids felt they could move Kellyn because they were fairly confident they were getting Bryan.
Nice. Good bit of business here. December of 2024 he'll be turning 31. Crucial age point for a wing back that's got as much of an engine as he does. Honestly, I think Rosenberry has turned into one of the more underrated signings for the Rapids. He's played in 81 out of a possible 86 regular season games since coming to CO, with 80 of those 81 being starts. It's also worth noting his injury last year caused him to miss 4 out of his 5 total missed games in a Rapids uniform. Of those 80 starts he's gone the full 90 a whopping 73 times - which is crazy to think about when you consider how much distance he's asked to cover up and down that right flank. And as a wingback for us he's tallied 4G/8A, and averaged a very respectable 84% passing accuracy with the Rapids. When I think of Rosenberry I think of a no nonsense, just overall solid player. He understands his role, and he goes out and executes what Fraser asks of him. Is he the best wingback the league has ever seen? Obviously not. But he's the kind of player you can count on to go out there, work hard all game, and get things done at starting quality (or often better than starting quality) - and the kind of player ANY MLS club would want to have on their roster because you know you can plug him in right away and get good games out of the guy.
Today us starting to feel very similar to Feb 20th, 2019 - when the Rapids announced extensions for Kellyn Acosta, Diego Rubio, and Keegan Rosenberry. I remember watching the Facebook Live video feed of the press conference that these announcements were made and Padraig made a big deal about how these 3 players were going to be crucial to the future of the club.** A quote from PS on this: Acosta grew into being a huge part of our (and the USMNT) midfield and resulted in a HUGE $1.2-1.5m transfer. Rosenberry, I've already sung his praises above. Rubio - I know we give him a lot of flack on here, but think of our strikers before him. 2018: Dom Badji, Giles Barnes, Yannick Boli, Niki Jackson, and Jack McBean 2017: Dom Badji, Kevin Doyle, Caleb Calvert, and Alan Gordon 2016: Dom Badji, Caleb Calvert, Conor Doyle, and Kevin Doyle 2015: Dom Badji, Deshorn Brown (for 1 game), Caleb Calvert, Kevin Doyle, Gabriel Torres I mean, Rubio has done so much of the dirty work that strikers hate to do and has allowed Fraser to build up a very successful system. I know Badji had that great scoring streak end of 2021, but we all know what it was like to have Badji as our starting striker and who we counted on to score....Now, we find goals from all over the field - and a lot of that is thanks to the off the ball work Rubio has been willing to do. It's great to see the progression of the club the last few years. **While these three were listed as "signings for the future" I think the best bit of business to come out of 2019 was when Anthony Hudson was fired in May**
Capt Jack Re-Signed as well! Oh Captain! Our Captain!@jacko_8 ain't going nowhere, we've signed him through 2024 😤#Rapids96— Colorado Rapids (@ColoradoRapids) January 19, 2022 Signed through 2024 with club options for 2025 and 2026
Sigh- I guess I can live with Wilson a bit longer. Just hate how exposed he is with any "emergency defending" situations.
Worth noting, Bryan Acosta was a DP for Dallas. However, he will not be a DP for the Rapids. Apparently (thanks to Joseph Samuelson's reporting) his transfer fee is what pushed him over the DP threshold for Dallas. Bryan Acosta's base salary for FCD was $650k, with $700k in guaranteed. By comparison Kellyn Acosta was $1mil base, and $1.15mil guaranteed. I do not know what Padraig and Co signed him to on this new contract. I imagine it would have been lower than his original $650k given his recent form, but you never know. If they signed him to the same deal as before, it still frees up approximately $400k or so in salary cap room. Mark Anthony Kaye's reported salary was $250k last year. I imagine that the Rapids gave him a bit of a raise using that $400k in freed up money by moving K. Acosta.** **I know the Rapids have plenty of room under the cap, but moving K. Acosta made it a lot easier to give MAK a new and lucrative deal to stay with the Rapids without really rocking the salary boat we currently have. Plus, we made back (and them some) the amount of cash we traded to LAFC for MAK. It was pretty clear that K. Acosta was not intent on signing with the Rapids after 2022. He seems to be in the "Europe or bust" mindset right about now. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing! Players want what players want. Moving him now was clearly, in my opinion, the best move for the Rapids roster beyond 2022 - especially in light of the announcements over the last several days.**
Just a note that Kellyn Acosta has a team held option for 2023, that's where the team was trying to extend him beyond.
Ah yeah forgot about that. Either way you cut it, he wouldn't have been happy if we took the option for 2023 and didn't move him to Europe. I think that's pretty clear. And I don't think an unhappy Acosta would've been performing very well for us....just look at his last season in Dallas if you want to see how an unhappy Acosta plays
In the media Q&A the Rapids clarified a typo in two of the announcements today. Wilson and Price are now signed through 2023, with team options for 2024 and 2025. That's one year less for both players than was originally in the announcement.
Padraig Smith says they are actively pursuing options for a #9. He's also made it very clear that there were no offers from Europe to buy Kellyn, and the only offer they got was a couple hours after they made the deal official with LAFC and it was a free loan offer with multiple caveats. He mentioned that they gave Kellyn's representatives time to find an offer in Europe before they made the deal official and got no offers.
Per Jake Shapiro, apparently Rapids 2/Rapids MLS Next Pro/Los RapiDos may be playing out of DU's soccer facility.
USMNT midfielder Cole Bassett has passed his medical with Feyenoord. His loan with purchase option from the Colorado Rapids is all done, per source.Deal includes a loan fee. If they trigger the option, total package will be new club record for the Rapids. https://t.co/5ii6c4lQTY— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) January 20, 2022 I wonder what the loan fee is. Sam Vines is the current club record at 2mil, and per Tom’s reporting the fee plus purchase would be a new record. Maybe $750k loan fee, and then a 1.5-2mil outright purchase? Really hard to guess what these things are but I base my numbers off the fact that the “total package” of loan + purchase option is the record deal.
Good news! Unlike Sam Vines at Royal Antwerp, you can order a Feyenoord jersey straight from the team shop online, and they already have Bassett's name and number available to be put on the kit. Bad news, the jersey, name, number, and shipping will set you back about $160. https://fanshop.feyenoord.com/feyenoord-thuisshirt-2021-22.html
The Dutch Eredivisie is on ESPN+ and Sunday morning at 4am MT they're showing the Feyenoord match, but I'm guessing that's too soon for Bassett to be available. Their next match after that isn't until Feb. 6th due to the World Cup qualifying break, and ESPN+ hasn't uploaded the February schedule yet.
They have a new shirt sponsor, so this is the sale price now, as Adidas is going out. Saves quite alot. Shipping is expensive, so I guess ordering a few with others is probably cheaper. Maybe you can app Cole to start a shipping business of shirts printed with his name with a profit of 10$ a shirt. I suppose you can have the shirt printed in the States too.
Ha! Well, with a tiny lesson in "Nederlands"... NL'ers pronounce "pool" the same as we pronounce "pole". "oo" is always a long "o" sound. So, "Pool Bassett" can still apply! But the goal/gol sound is universal and can thus still apply. So, at Feyenoord, let's hope he's the latter and not the former! More importantly. He's some Beavis & Butthead level trivia. Cole went from playing at "The Dick" for the Rapids to playing at "The Cockpit" for Feyenoord. ("De Kuip" = "The Cockpit").
Wasn’t sure where to post this, as I’m drawing a comparison with a former Rapid, but did y’all see the sending off Diego Valeri got from Portland? Forever our maestro.💚💛After 9 magical seasons, legend Diego Valeri has transferred to his boyhood club Lanús in Argentina. The clubs will play a testimonial match in 2023, and upon retirement Valeri will become a Timbers ambassador.Details: https://t.co/yqo2V5L3LM | #RCTID pic.twitter.com/9w0P827Zzg— Portland Timbers (@TimbersFC) January 20, 2022 So, they’ve mutually agreed to transfer him to his boyhood club; they’ll play a testimonial match in 2023; and then he’s going to become a “Timbers Ambassador” after retiring. Meanwhile, one of our club legends is currently the head coach of our biggest rival…. Man I hope we CRUSH FSL this year. Just crush them. Obliterate the score lines. 8-2 aggregate score after the Rocky Mountain Cup games this year. Is that likely to happen? Well…it is coach Pablo we’re up against
