New year, new opportunities and new main Netherlands thread :). November 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of women's football as part of the KNVB football association but it really only gained mainstream attention since qualifying for Euro 2009 (the next jump in popularity was achieved by the first ever World Cup qualification in 2015).
First success was the 2014 U19 title decided by a single Vivianne Miedema goal in the title match against Spain. Miedema named player of the tournament and was top scorer as well (funnily enough Dominique Janssen was creating havoc in her own defence back then already, scoring an own goal in the group stage match against Scotland). Three of the 2014 squad made the title winning Euro 2017 selection and five made the 2019 WC squad (a sixth, keeper Vreugdenhil was the fourth goalie in contention and probably should have been selected instead of Kops, imo. A huge letdown for Vreugdenhil who was the goalie for Valencia at the time. Lost the joy in football and left Valencia the following January and retired from football in August of 2020 at the age of 25).

Anyhoo, with a Euro 2017 gold and 2019 silver medal the Leeuwinnen are gearing up for Euro 2022 led by new head coach Mark Parsson, who has had a rocky start so far to say the least.
Here is the official fixture list for 2022; February Tournoi de France and other friendlies to follow:

Coincidentally bumped into this video covering the history of the Leeuwinnen on Youtube this week (no English subtitles unfortunately but does have Dutch subtitles; download here if you will to translate):

Ties is nicely with the history section on the KNVB website: https://www-onsoranje-nl.translate.goog/teams/207834/historie?_x_tr_sl=nl&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=nl (https://www.onsoranje.nl/teams/207834/historie )

Oh yeah, forgot to post this Black Friday pickup :whistling::D:ninja: (#nojinx):

2022 kicked off with a Jackie Groenen interview, published back on January 3rd. Read it here: https://nos-nl.translate.goog/artik...et-oranje?_x_tr_sl=nl&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=nl (the video appears to be geo-restricted to the Netherlands I read)

Key take away for me (cleaned up the terrible auto-translate a little :ninja:): "I think the most important thing about sport is that you enjoy it. If that decreases, I will start doing something else; I may not be the best professional topathlete in that respect. Of course winning prizes is super fun and don't get me wrong, because wherever I am winning is a must. But still, there are also other things in life."
That is exactly how she comes across to me, probably her big sis has the killer instinct of the two.

On the Groenen note, my next project: replicate her (official) debut shirt. have the numbers and the shirt but couldn't get all the letters anymore. The new/current ones (top) are fairly similar though but will probably try to have the original style made or make myself at some point:
This was her debut kit and number but in a training camp practice match/friendly without names on the back (v Turkey iirc)

Eredivisie round 15 results: (match highlights here)

No player transfers in the Eredivisie (there probably is no mid-season transfer window) but at least three coaching changes coming up next season. Firstly FC Twente are parting ways with the Tommy Stroot successor (NT head coach that Wiegman succeeded). They've become so accustomed to the Stroot way that this was not deemed a succesfull match in manner of working together. Results have been good though lately after a rocky start of the season.
Next up: Ajax have (finally) decided to say goodbye to their head coach. Underperformed for two seasons with by far the best squads but this season with a more trimmed squad and more consistent lineup (forced by injuries in large) somewhat starting to come together.
And thirdly, this week PEC Zwolle's head coach announced his intention to leave after being at the club in various roles for 7 years, 3 of which as head coach (still young like Stroot). I like the way they play, particularly this season, but injuries have put a damper on the season after a good start. By the end of today's matchday the've managed to get him to admit he is in talks with Twente :D.

Interesting lineup by Twente: no (natural) central defenders on the pitch, let alone in the squad o_O. No van Es, Dijkstra, Ypema (wonder if they're quarantined) ... Only two players over the age of 23 in the starting lineup, midfield is 22/16/19 (Peddemors looking good today, haven't seen her play much; returning from ACL injury end of 2020. One of those that was in the 2019 UEFA U17 Final, maybe a more athletic Groenen type [similar build, slightly taller]. Quite skillful on the ball ). Marc Parssons in attendance as well today ...

Has Peddemors been a forward in the past? The player I'm thinking of was tallish and speedy and impressive for the U17 team. But I remember her as being on the wing.... could be mistaken.

Seem to remember her covering the right flank as well during the U17 euro's but not her normal position

Yes, probably valid for all competitions but I can't remember any transfers happening in women's football the past few seasons ... Perhaps has to do with most players being on a one year contract only? Last summer window marked the first ever transfer fee paid in women's football for a national transfer (van Diemen from Ajax to Feyenoord; had a multi-year contract which is more prevalent only at Ajax).

Round 16 of the 2021/22 Eredivisie season (this year they'll play each other three times; instead of a playoff system iirc). SC Heerenveen v Ajax match post-poned due to too many positive Covid tests at Ajax ...

Unexpectedly they do turn out to have a livestream up for ADO The Hague v PEC Zwolle on their Youtube channel (that hasn't seen any action in months)

Unfortunately they have brought out the potato to film it and forgot to turn on the rest of the stadium lights :laugh:o_O (of course the price for energy is sky high at the moment and no doubt they've only turned on just enough to play at night)

In the news this week: the Eredivisie will get two more teams next season to make it eleven teams (and they hope to eventually reach 12)

No league matches this weekend but a Cup round: Saestum is an interesting club here (from the Utrecht area), club with the most national titles before the 'professional' league was started (still are the leaders though but Twente closing in)

    First one postponed already :alien:

Saestum v ADO The Hague livestreamed (with a different potato this time). Saestum the undefeated nr.1 in the second division (no promotion to the Eredivisie).
A bit of a storm today and I see it's affecting the game there as well (pretty nearby after all relatively speaking). ADO should have the advantage in the second half ...

PSV v Ajax cancelled due to heavy rainfall. Catchup game for Ajax against Heerenveen earlier in the week postponed as well for a second time but this time around it was Heerenveen with too many positive Covid tests in the squad :alien:.
With the Euro's this year and international match windows scheduling is becoming a tight affair.
Slightly touched on the Tournoi de France in the broadcast but not much Leeuwinnen news to report. No word on Damaris yet either, awfully quiet on that front :cautious: ...

And another round of Eredivisie, last one before the international break and Tournoi de France.
Another match postponed involving Heerenveen due to positive Covid test results :alien:. This is starting to get ridiculous: first one Ajax was the cause, second one Heerenveen were the cause and now Twente is the cause of the postponement . Wonder if any Twente internationals are affected :whistling: ...

  17. Interview with Parsons. Use google translate if interested
    https://www.ad.nl/nederlands-voetba...len-een-bepaalde-energie-laten-zien~a0519387/

Assuming Finland is the match used for experimentation, the schedule worked out well/conveniently for Parsons (i.e. the weakest opposition on paper as the second of the matches).

It sounds like the French tournament could be something of a bust for The Netherlands. After reading the above--that Parsons want to use two matches in this tourney to gear up his likely starters for the Euro Championship (and the other for having a look at younger players), I read that Roord, Wilms and D. Janssen all tested positive for Covid in Germany. I don't think they have even traveled to France--and four new, young players have been called in. So sounds like that group will not be playing at all. Sux badly. I'm SO sick of Covid. The top assistant coach has also tested positive, I believe. Plus Van de Donk is out--still recovering from her serious hamstring injury. That's four starters and your top assistant. Good grief.

Yea, except most are very young and have played little or not at all on the national team, and so it's going to be a messy three games for the Dutch, I'm afraid.

The players are Lisa Doorn and Chastity Grant from Ajax. Kayleigh van Dooren (whom I've spoken about earlier in this topic) from Twente and Janou Levels from PSV. All are regulars in the U23 squad and two have made their senior debut in the game against Japan? (Or Levels maybe sooner already?).
The KNVB reports only speaks of the [French] strict corona protocols preventing their travels (?) ...
You're really 'only' missing Janssen, Roord en vd Donk. Grant is in the mold of vd Sanden and has been in good form of late ... Doorn iirc put in a mature shift against Japan and they already had van Diemen in the squad whom seemed destined for the NT at the 2019 Euro U17 already  (as stand in possibilities for Janssen, or van Diemen as extra cover for Willms as well)
Esmee Brugts in the squad for the first time as well but as highly as I have spoken about her before, this season she is acting like a right diva, also diving at the slightest contact . I'll take Chimera Ripa over her at this moment ...

Speaking of: I'm just now finding out that after only 1 season at Heerenveen she will be joining PSV next season on a three year contract  https://www.psv.nl/vrouwen/nieuws/artikel/ripa-aanwinst-voor-psv-vrouwen-.htm
