Regarding Pepi and Dike---i cant help but have conflicting emotions. I long for the day when the prestige and the payday in MLS is large enough where we can keep our young talent for a while and have these players grow with the league and make a career here. On the other hand I recognize that being a "selling league" is an important step up for MLS from where the league was when it first started out in 96. Still one cant help but feel a little sad at seeing young talented guys like this leave. One can only hope that the record transfer fees the MLS clubs will collect will actually go towards bettering the on field product or towards building up club infrastructure like youth academies or better scouting rather than lining owner pockets.
I don't remember where I've read it but that's all it can be used for and the owners can't line their pockets. From what I remember it can be used for infrastructure and only a certain amount goes into Gam.
I do think slow evolution is the way to sustainable improvement. I wonder if Garber et al need to start thinking about changing the $ restrictions to allow more of the money to be used on bottom of the roster salaries. That old improve the product and the players union should love that. It also incentivized every club to develop their academies.
Clubs get to keep 100% of HGP transfer fees and 95% of non HGP transfer fees. The remaining 5% can be converted into GAM. MLS added two slots to the roster and is increasing minimum salary to $97,700 by 2027.
