Oh I completely. I was being a bit facetious and glib in my reply. I mean, it's a problem that's so unique to America. Thats the part that always gets me. I mean, in Canada, we loads of angry teens too. Teased kids, etc....but school shootings are such a rarity here. I dont think we have the same culture around guns. So, is that the reason why?
Personally, I don't think this is the time to push for gun control in the States. With increased threats of civil war, many progressives might be interested in arming themselves.
I figured as much and didn't think you were taking a cheap shot at all. As for the deeper question, I wish I had an answer. I mean, I know we've got way too many guns out there and it just stands to reason that a ready interface between firearms and teenage volatility is going to fuel the kind of events we just saw here in Michigan, but I know that's not everything.
That is a horrifying statement. 1. "Gun control" would do nothing to stop the "many progressives" from arming themselves. They would fill out the forms, pass the "background check," wait the appropriate period of time and purchase their guns. 2. I don't want progressives or anybody "arming themselves" because of a threat of "civil war." There is no bigger recipe for disaster than that!
I'd argue it's more wrongheaded and problematic than horrifying. Good point, although there are proponents for much stricter and restrictive gun control than those which are broadly popular. I'm not so sure about this. For one thing, I suspect the most likely form our 'civil war' might take would be rather decentralized and local in nature, and IMHO would mostly take the form of open-carry by groups seeking to intimidate protesters and voters. Now, if we get to the point where the Right begins moving towards large-scale, organized, and proactive paramilitary violence, then yeah, I don't think having the rest of us packing is the answer. Better to purge police and National Guards of extremists, antigovernment types, white supremacists, etc.
I could talk about how my school was able to manage the Whittier-Narrows earthquake in 1989/90/91 (I forget which year). That earthquake happened just before school and the school and teachers had to manage us prior to the cell phone days. They were calling every parent in every file for hours. My dad worked about 15 to 20 minutes from school (mom was out of town) and it took him over an hour to get to school. Yes, the students were put in a situation that was abhorrent, but how they handled it and how the school was prepared should be recognized. We all have to adjust to new things, particularly regarding schools.
There's a podcast called It Could Happen Here that has a series on the 2nd Civil War. Highly recommend it. The tldr is he imagines it would play out like Syria more than what we (the general public) imagine it would be like. Quite horrifying, especially as it's a couple years old now and see how things have played out is...distressing. And prescient.
What I find odd about all the right wing memes about bringing about a new civil war in the US is that they envision it as being fought almost exclusively between liberal and conservative armed private citizens. If (or when) the right wing extremists get their dream of rising up in arms, do they imagine the army, national guard, police, etc will just sit it out and not get involved?
They imagine that the army, national guard, police, etc, will fight on their behalf. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen.
But then all that jazz about needing to pack heat to prevent an abusive government from getting too grabby with their freedumbs is pretty much just hogwash, no? I mean, not that I would ever accuse right wingers of being logically consistent, but that is a pretty blatant contradiction.
Yes it's not exactly clear who is trying to take their freedumbs if they believe the police and armed forces are with them.
Yup. The only reason to fear the Proud Boys, Three Percenters, and other such groups is if the police and military at least tacitly support them.
Suddenly my master's thesis on Spartanburg County South Carolina comes in handy! But yeah, the election of 1876, and various elections in the South at the very end of the 19th century, that's where we need to look for the analogies.
Pastor Rick Joyner has been a prominent voice toward civil war. He also called for a military coup against Obama. I look upon anyone who participated on January 6 as an enemy.
Oh and as far as this gun control thing goes….I’m not disarming until they do. I won’t get caught with my [emoji533] in my hands
Just trying to figure out where Trumpers hang out when it kicks off. The American Legion, the police department, the church. Well I don't partake in any of those so I think I'm safe
They won't be Trumpers.Once they start,Trump could call on them to stand down, and they'd burn him too.
That’s only step one, if these children had all been armed as well this could have been completely prevented!
1987, it was my freshman year of high school. And I had zero period PE so we were already dressed in the gym when it hit, and basically stampeded for the doors after our coach yelled “everybody outside!!!” It went a little smoother after that, but was definitely not a cool, calm and collected response initially. To be fair that was the biggest quake any of us had yet experienced and we were pretty near the epicenter so it was intense.
