John van't Schip has been given the sack. TBT he should be managing a more technically gifted side better equipped to implement his ideas than our national side. I wish him all the best.

Frankly, he deserves better give his talent. He was the best coach I've ever seen in Greece; however, he still has some way to go before becoming a great manager (in due time I imagine). I think his one serious mistake was his handling of our most senior players. There was too much distrust between all the parties involved and the fences couldn't be mended in the end. He's and the FA are as much to blame as these players in my opinion.

We might look back on this decision as a mistake, but onwards and forward we go. Fernando Santos could very well return to the job. Manolo Jimenez who has managed AEK on and off again is another viable candidate. I'd like to consider Ernesto Valverde, but I don't know if he's a tenable option.

The Greek FA are looking mostly at Italian managers. One name I saw mentioned was Marcello Lippi! Another name in the mix, although not Italian, is Carlos Dunga. The name most commonly reported as of late is di Biasi. He led Albania to a couple of impressive wins and to their first major finals.

Marcel Koller was supposedly considered too, but it seems Gus Poyet will be named manager. Both favor a physical brand and represent something of a departure from van't Schip's Cruyff inspired ideas. Poyet's greatest feat as manager was when he guided Sunderland from relegation in 2014 despite a tough run of games where it looked like they were down and out.

It's Gus Poyet. They're just crossing the T's and dotting the I's at this point.

He's an interesting hire, but the right one? He fits the kind of football Greece tends to play, physical and spirited. Greece's strengths remain firmly in defense, but scoring goals continues to be a problem. I'm not sure if he will have real ideas to help Greece score more goals. It's questionable whether he is a big enough name, enough of an outsider to not be influenced by the politics and selfish interests of Greece's big clubs and odd ball agents.
