I feel for these first matches Ikeda called up the players he knows from the past or is already familiar with so he can figure out a core team to rely on before inviting new (to him) players.

In fact, I've rarely seen so-called super goal in this year WE LEAGUE.
Although Japanese players tend to break through the opponents by combination play, they lack the accuracy in the attacking third especially in international matches. Don't you think we need stronger and more accurate shooting technique first?

But does he have to call players without practice? He also should be able to work with new players. How did put his U-20 team together when he started there? Or did he work with them already when they were little Nadeshiko?

Players Nagasato had good impression in WE LEAGUE are Nakajima, Ogawa, Ohsawa, Inoue, Takikawa, Kitamura, Nakashima, Miyazawa and Yoshida, and monthly MVP of November is Ando, the other commentator's one is Narumiya and the chairwoman's one is Ohtaki Ami.

To be accurate, she had some little significant playing time at the beginning of the US season, i.e., before the Olympics. I agree that it was ages ago and that she didn't have any significant playing time in the subsequent months, so your conclusion stands. I am just nitpicking. :coffee:

I mean, giving birth is sure an outstanding achievement, but not really in a football perspective of things.

    Thanks for this.

I will not say too much until I have seen the match. Even after watching the game I will not say too much, because it is their first game under Ikeda. But they should probably not be losing to Iceland.

Then again you learn a lot more from your losses than you do from your victories. But repeating the same mistakes as your predecessor is not a good way to start.

Without a few players like Hasegawa, Shimizu etc. this squad would be almost below average based on what I saw from European national teams.

I want to see Japan vs Spain. Just to know exactly, if Nadeshiko has a chance to at least compete or we can forget about Japan winning any titles in the next 5-6 years.

I think Spain might be the best NT in the world (potentially) as all those Barcelona core of players, just mastered the Japanese way of playing. Tiki-taka, total control, quick pressing, and all their players quite athletic, can work as hard as Japanese players at their best, plus so much more quality everywhere.

Seriously, I think people don't fully realise what happened to Japan... If I correct in my vision of the Japanese state of football today, the party has over, this is it, it's done. Back to Asian cups etc, it's might be impossible to compete with the elite countries anymore. What I saw is so bad, it's just so bad, it's unbelievable. Disaster. No ideas, no nothing. Who is going to score goals in this team? No left-back still, just doesn't exist. This team can only survive humiliation if you gonna put Hasegawa-Iwabauchi-Sugita-Miura on the pith and let them control possession for 90 minutes, and maybe someone somehow will score a lucky shot.

p/s God please keep Shimizu healthy, otherwise, any opponent would destroy japan not only on the left side but on the right side as well...Just run through, cross, score. If Iceland can do this so easy, what's going to happen against any elite teams with world-class wingers...

p/p/s My god, this was even twice worse than Olympics... I am scared to watch this game against the Netherlands...Even though I think Nederlands is not as good nowadays, but still...

One thing I like about Ikeda is his willingness to answer question in detail at press conferences. Reading the countless articles that came out after yesterdays defeat he at least seems to fully understand where things went wrong, which is more than I can say about Takakura. Whether he can fix those problems is yet to be seen but I mean it's an improvement when he can confidently tell us what he saw on the pitch instead of only making vague comments about "heart" and "passing football".

    https://www.footballchannel.jp/2021/11/26/post446165/

My football terminology in english is not good enough at all to translate but this article is one of the many with comments from Ikeda.

Mate I'm sorry to tell you that most people in Japan don't have the mindset of winning (world) titles for at least the next 10 years. They want slow sustainable, maintainable growth, not just a generation of good players to suddenly win a competition out of nowhere. It's time to be realistic, Iceland is only 3 places below Japan in the rankings. Japan have fallen to their current position and Iceland has risen. Most aren't even considering winning 2023 or 2024 as a possibility. That is where Japan is right now and there is nothing more to it.

I'm also confused as to why people seem to be expecting things to turn around from the way they were only a couple months back after 7 days of training camp (5 of those a month ago with only domestic players) under a new coach. This team is starting from the bottom again just give them time and then we can panic.

Mate, I am sorry to tell you, this team is not going to grow, this team will continue to fall down for the next 10 years (unless someone else will be appointed, or this coach would change 50% of this team).

Takakura's team had much more potential. Actually, I think a lot of people would start to miss her in a while. She couldn't figure out the last beats that this team were missing in the attack, but her selections and the overall idea was probably the best at the time.

A bunch of young talented players, already quite experienced, trying to play the Japanese style of football. Some changes should've been done in the attack, but overall it was the best way forward (in my opinion).

But ok, this was only 1 game, let's see another one or a few more. Let's see Asian cups and we can get back to this discussion then.

p/s National team coach never has enough time to work with a team. Their job is to call the best players at the moment, which is suited for their style of play and just let them play. Simple as that. You can change their way of playing football at their clubs, but you can't train them a certain approach in a few weeks training camps. That's why I don't understand what this new coach wants to achieve if those players are simply not capable to play such a style of football.

p/p/s I remember that game Japan vs the Netherlands at the World Cup 2019, when Japan dominated the whole game, but couldn't score. That was total domination and the Netherlands were lucky, let's see how this new team will do against them in a few days time ))

Click on this link to go to youtube and watch it. Good old memories, well, not that good, but this beautiful football though...Eeeeh........

Czechia vs. Netehrlands match (in Ostrava) has been rescheduled for tomorrow due to extreme weather conditions.

Oranje team will have a short time to recover before Japan game. I think they will play subs vs. Japan.

Depending on what coach Ikeda has in mind - another round of player/position tryouts, or he's gonna be testing tactcial setup for AFC Cup - the final result of that game should be in Japan favor - if the latter, or quite open if the former.

...unless tomorrow match in Czechia will be cancelled then Netherlands are huge favs against Japan on Tuesday.

What is this technology....if something like this exists maybe I should share more Japanese articles I find interesting here.

Despite the defeat the reaction so far from football analysts in Japan seem to be quite positive. They seem to think the team is moving in the right direction and they are at least trying to cover their shortcomings at the Olympics. It’s actually quite funny how cautious they are being with their words given it’s only their first game.

I also just realized Iceland had 2 goal and 2 shots on target......

I finally watched the game and to be honest it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Some of the pressing was actually quite good and Nadeshiko did win the ball in attacking positions, but they just did nothing with it; that was disappointing. Also there were some poor decisions made at key times and they moved the ball far too slowly. However, when they did string some quick passes together they looked much more dangerous, but it did not happen very often and then their decision making let them down.

Also very little penetration into the box. I am wondering if anybody actually took a shot from inside the penalty box with their foot. A lot of passing to the wings, but they need to also cut the ball back to the top of the penalty box. Also more passing from central midfield to the top of the penalty box would be nice.

The defenders were not that bad for the second goal but the forwards were! The long ball happened because the forwards did not close down the defender who made the pass. Nadeshikos' forwards have to close down the defenders to prevent any long balls from happening. That is how you defend as a whole.

I do wish Japanese managers would stop playing players out of position. I will leave it at that because it is only the first game of Ikeda's tenure.

Iceland played to their strengths and it worked. It is hard to say they were the better team, but they got near the goal they looked dangerous, unlike Nadeshiko who never got anywhere near the goal.

A little disappointed we wont be able to watch Viv vs Mana but you know it's also a bit relieving to be honest.

On Japan's side it seems Iwabuchi has joined team training and will be playing again't the Netherlands while Takarada and Ueki are slightly injured and probably won't participate.
