Get 9 of those and they it would be a 'perfect game' in my book. If the pitcher throws any balls or any pop-flys, then he clearly wasn't perfect.

I think it’s a mistake that reverses have fallen into as much disfavor as they seem to. IMHO, it’s a great tool to have in your pocket for some field situations.

I disagree. In my experience it makes it all the more important, and I hated looking over there and wondering where the heck they went. :barefoot:

My daughter and I went to our first ice hockey game this season. As normal (and I hate they do this) the crowd booed when the referees took the ice. My daughter asked if fans ever booed me and my crew when we took the field. Surprisingly, no. Thinking about it, I'm surprised we haven't, at least for high school games. The worst spectators I have encountered this season have been U10 out of town rec teams and high school.

Have any of you heard boos when talking the field?

I can't think of a time I got feedback prior to actually "missing" a call, but I echo your hockey experience; when at an RIT hockey game on Parents' Weekend, brass band in attendance (which was cool!), the teams were brought out to their respective fight songs and then the refs came on to "The Imperial March." Somehow it did not strike me as coming from a place of ironic respect.

Also, ditto the out of town U10 and HS spectators. Get a life.

I seem to recall the Richmond Kickers playing 3 blind mice when the referee crew would come out.

Never got boo'd before the game. I mean, come on, man. Do you want the refs on your side or not?

I did discover that, at least on the USL Pro games I did, that the mascot (a real lumberjack, not a guy inside a costume) would come out on the field after the game, if the home team had lost, and walk with us towards the locker room entrance, as he whipped up the crowd. As he told us, "They won't throw stuff at me." A real class act guy.

Before the Grey Cup last night, they introduced the referee. Crowd booed. My wife: "Are they booing the ref before the game started?"

Things like that show how fair and rational fans are when it comes to officiating. They are definitely going into games with open minds and not going in prepared to blame the referee for everything wrong their team does.

U14 boys futsal game in a tournament with eight full-size courts in an exhibition hall (this context matters). This game has two teams with some history between them, with a number of immigrants on both teams. I was put on this game specifically because Blue has a penchant for rough play and mouthy coaches.

About 10 minutes into the game, Blue's attacker goes through the back of Gold's defender. I blow the whistle and come in to talk with the attacker. Immediately, Blue's coach is yelling at me to stop "yelling" at the player and to use my whistle. While I was talking loudly because of the noise in the building, I was not ever yelling at the player.

I ask the coach to stop, and he continues to tell me to use my whistle. So I do - I whistle to stop the game as I come across the court to caution the coach.

Hey, he wanted me to use my whistle, so I gave him his wish. The coach was just mad that he finally had a referee who wasn't going to put up with the usual extra stuff his club does, and he wasn't happy about it.

In our preseason meeting with our area referee admin (high school) he said the number of high school basketball ejections are up 1 1/2 times from this time last year. So expect more misconduct in soccer.

First two games of the season tonight. JV girls was fine. JV boys, one YC for kicking the ball away a second time after a foul. Even his coach said "Card him. He and I need to have a talk."

Five minutes left in a 5-0 game, I am AR2 raising my flag for offside. Player says to me "There is no way I was offside." His own teammate, the captain, gets close to him and says "We are winning 5-0. Shut the F*** up." Only those two and I heard it. I told the captain we have been instructed to crack down on the language and misconduct. The next referee might red card you if he hears that." Hopefully he will take that to heart in his next game.

I might have been inclined to be checking my shoelaces at the moment the captain said that.

Not saying you were wrong, not by a longshot. Just musing what I might have done, from the comfort of my living room. Temperature, other/previous behavior, and sunspots all would be factors of course.

(To the captain) - "I get what you were saying, and you were right, but you need to use better language. Don't put either of us in a bad spot . . ."

I got a new one the other night after a high school game, "I hope your wife divorces you [pause] or husband. I don't know which for you."
It was a spectator student as we were walking away from each other. I just chuckled.

BV HS game. Long pass, OS whistle. Coach starts to complain as there are now several defenders behind the attacker. I look at the attacker, "when he kicked the ball." Forward: "I know. I was hoping you didn't see it."

(Well, in a two man game that was high enough level to really need a full three man crew, certainly not a bad bet to make . . .I'm a few games into doing duals, and not definitely not becoming a fan.)

BJV HS game. Give player YC for PI in 6'. Throughout rest of first half, he is running hard at players and clearly didn't learn lesson, but nothing connects, so I warn him as we leave for halftime. At halftime I tell crew I know he's getting a second caution. 37' in front of opponent's bench, opponent jumping in air, he runs in and just kicks up into player's shins. Opponent yells out. Issue player second caution.

Where the weirdness comes in is that the opponent's coach (Irish accent) says that I shouldn't have done that, "it was just a coming together", I could have just talked to him instead of giving a second caution. Coach's own player who got fouled yelled, asking what the hell he was doing, that kid had been running at them all half, why is he defending him.

I think I can say that I'll never have that happen again.

Few years back I started sitting down to urinate in my own house when I would have to go at night, and went to doing it full time in my house (or any house where you actually care about toilet cleanliness). You guys will laugh at it but you basically never have to worry about cleaning any part of your toilet outside of the bowl again.

In a high school clinic, Kim Oberle talked about match management. She got to Emotional Intelligence. "What is one way you use to keep your emotions in check?" One response was "I was once told just because it pops into your head doesn't mean it has to pop out of your mouth." Someone asked "Who told you that? Your mother?" The guy said "No, my wife."
