Oh. My. Guille. Did that just happen? Matchday 8 is drunk. Jamaica 1-1 United States Costa Rica 2-1 Honduras Panama 2-1 El Salvador Canada 2-1 Mexico Updated standings: 1. Canada - 16P / 8 GD / 13 GF 2. United States - 15P / 7 GD / 12 GF 3. Mexico - 14P / 4 GD / 11 GF -------------------------------------------- 4. Panama - 14P / 2 GD / 11 GF -------------------------------------------- 5. Costa Rica - 9P / -1 GD / 6 GF 6. Jamaica - 7P / -4 GD / 6 GF 7. El Salvador - 6P / -6 GD / 4 GF 8. Honduras - 3P / -10 GD / 5 GF O Canada, indeed. Eight matches down, six to go. The top four feels just about set, especially with Panama's two impressive comebacks to take all six points this window (although they have a challenging schedule the rest of the way). Looking ahead, January 30 (an amazing day, to be sure) will be massive. The Canada-US match could decide the winner of the Ocho, Costa Rica will be fighting for its qualifying life in Mexico, and Panama-Jamaica could settle Panama's place in the top four. Here's the next window's matchups: Matchday 9 - Jan. 27* Honduras vs. Canada United States vs. El Salvador Costa Rica vs. Panama Jamaica vs. Mexico Matchday 10 - Jan. 30* Canada vs. United States Honduras vs. El Salvador Mexico vs. Costa Rica Panama vs. Jamaica Matchday 11 - Feb. 2* El Salvador vs. Canada United States vs. Honduras Mexico vs. Panama Jamaica vs. Costa Rica Rest up, my lovelies. Only 71 days until CONCACAF is back! *Subject to change.
No, but close!! You are probably confusing it with when Caleb Porter brought international humiliation upon US Soccer by losing to Canada 2-0, before giving up a last minute goal to El Salvador and failing to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. #NeverForget
FWIW, rumor has it Canada is looking at Toronto/Hamilton for the USA match, not so much Vancouver. If so, Goff is saying Cincy/Columbus could be in line for ine of the January matches, both to minimize travel time and keep us climatized for all 3 matches and freeze out El Salvador & Honduras. KC, & Nashville also mentioned. And I'd think Minnesota also a possibility.
Personally I'd look at Minnesota and KC as neither is much difference in travel and haven't had games yet. From my source, It's really either Vancouver or Hamilton. Toronto (BMO or baseball stadium) are out. Fed would prefer game in Vancouver (and also $1M+ more in revenue) but players want it East. Am hearing that announcement will be made next week.
Forge FC -- leaders of Canada's top flite domestic league. Anyone else find themselves wanting to watch the Motagua game?
Maybe because Quebec isn't exactly super pro-Canada? I mean, the leading political party in the region (or nearly so) wants to succeed, don't they? They got 32 of Quebec's 78 seats. If the Libs/Conservatives split the rest, they have a plurality.
Well, maybe. But it could also be issues with the stadium itself. Built in the 70s, it needs a new roof. According to Wikipedia, it can't host winter events if there's more than 3 cm of snow on the roof.
It's been fun watching the rise of Canada so far this qualifying cycle, but they are about to get their full CONCACAF baptism in the final two qualifying windows. They've really only had 1.5 true CONCACAF road games so far. They played in a less than full Azteca and an empty stadium in Jamaica against a Jamaica team who were missing their two best players. Their other away game was in a less-than-hostile environment in Nashville. In this upcoming window, they will go to Honduras, fly back to Canada to play us, and then fly down to El Salvador. As we already know, Honduras and El Salvador are crazy places to play and those teams are playing with nothing to lose. It's going to be a tricky window for them with that much travel and a game against us in the middle of both of those road games. The next window could be a 2-3 point window for Canada just as easily as it could be a 5-6 point window. If it ends up being a 2-3 point window for Canada and a 6-7 point window for us, things will really be interesting going into the final window. In the final window, Canada will have to go to Costa Rica and to Panama. Those two games will be separated by a home game against a Jamaica team who should be much stronger than the one they faced in Kingston. Playing Costa Rica is always difficult. All three teams could potentially still have hopes of sneaking into the fourth spot in the table, and Panama might be fighting for an automatic qualification spot. We probably have the easiest 3 matches out of anyone in the next window, so it will be a huge opportunity for us to pick up 7 points and really put the pressure on everyone else heading into the final window.
John Herdman seems like an excellent coach, I’d have faith that he can get the required draws and maybe even sneak a win. Canada’s counterattack is so fantastic they can just bunker and attack with 3 or 4.
Oh yea, he's done a great job for sure. But the next two windows are going to be a whole different beast for them. If the team can keep playing with the confidence they've been playing, and if they can stay healthy, they should be fine. But you never know. It's going to be a crazy two windows for the top 4 teams. I'm both excited and terrified. I'll be much less terrified if we can get 7 points in the next window.

I want to bring a large group. I assume as STM we will get into a lottery. If anyone gets tix and needs to unload a few let me know.
I wonder if the new dome at HCS played into this decision at all. Obviously you want to do some of your training at outside to ensure you are acclimated to the weather, but it would definitely be helpful to have a large indoor field to use as for team walkthroughs and for recovery sessions for the guys coming from Europe. Guys like Pulisic and McKennie have games on the 23rd and will have to recover after a transatlantic flight and then be ready to play four days later. If I were them I'd much rather recover in a climate controlled area than outside on a windy January day in Columbus when it's 15 degrees outside.
