Watched it happen and honestly when it was sitting at 1-0 it just looked like a matter of time until Penn St would come back and score and then the second went in, and Penn St. looked like they were just trying so hard that they were always exposed. To be fair at about 5-0 I stopped watching too closely, it seemed to be a done deal and there are still so many games to go !
UW beat Portland in another exciting game! It has been a great day of games on both the womens and mens side!
UCLA scored early and played down a man for 60 plus minutes. UCLA came out in the second half with a bus, and Duke went at them. Created a lot of chances, UCLA has maybe a half a dozen touches in Dukes end of the pitch. Took Duke 40 plus to break thru and get the first, the second came a minute or so later. Then came the all the extra crap, a Duke forward decided to taunt the UCLA keeper, a UCLA CB took exception and knocked him on his ass to get the red. What followed was the typical soccer fight roust about with a lot of talk.
Maybe one of the most shocking results and scorelines in NCAA history. Penn State had outscored their opponents 11-0 over the last 4.5 games including a 3-0 over Indiana. To give up 8 goals at home is unprecedented. One of those days for PSU. Wow!
Any discipline for the Duke player's taunting? That looked pretty bad, excessive, unsporting. Shameful. With the game just lost - down a goal, down a man, little time left - the impulse to deck that guy was understandably irresistible. In this case, I have more sympathy for the decker than the deckee. * Waits to hear about the antecedents that might have justified such taunting. “It’s part of the sport, and people are competitive,” Duke head coach John Kerr said of the incident. “That’s why you play, because if you’re just straightforward and you don’t have any emotion, you’re not going to get very far.” Thanks for clarifying that, coach.
When taken in isolation, stuff like this looks bad. But those two had words throughout the game. The UCLA GK got the better of that forward for the better part of 85 minutes and he let him know it on a number of occasions. That forward had plenty of chances (9 shots, 3 on goal, no goals). This stuff builds, you could see this coming the whole game. I was not surprised, but I do believe the Duke forward got less than he deserved.
I noticed that also from your post, and for the life of me I cannot recall if they added back time after all the extra crap and I was there
Twelve guys were out all week with a non-covid illness for Penn State. https://www.collegian.psu.edu/sport...cle_11e282cc-4b3d-11ec-a70a-0b89abd7eff2.html
Don't know but of the all the games I watched it was the worst looking field--they had clearly done work and patched goal mouths etc... but you could see it had been really wet and it looked more patchy...didn't look like it could take too much more rain!!! Looks like they have changed the game time though to try and miss the rain!
