Moisés got a better shot than our attackers!lol!Whatever ,we won this 2-0 that should have been 4-0,but we’re making our presence known, this is what these team needed, but once again we got to defend better last 10 min.We have to keep this third place, let everyone else fight for 4/5.

That's the spirit...we've got to lock down that third spot.

If we count those easy chances, it's easily 6-0.

This team would be a monster if we had a reliable striker

Using the reverse physchology worked! Haha

what a win, but sheesh it took all the good luck in the world to achieve it. Only Peru got a favorable result, and Chile lost Sanchez and Vidal 30 mins into the first half

Luck evens out in the end. At the very least you hope it does. Against Chile in Quito, Sornoza was sent off. Who knows how that match would have played out had he not gotten sent off. Same applies to today's game. The outcome could have been different had Vidal not been red carded. Ecuador has been lucky lately but we've also been on the wrong end in the past.

You just need a single point in the last 4 games IMO to secure at least 5th position.

Don't see Peru getting more than 7 pts and their GD is terrible.
Chile will definitely not earn more than 7 pts (which is not even enough to reach 24 for them) and their GD in any case is also inferior.

Agreed 10000000%. And that's why this should be considered a "statement win". We broke so many curses in this game - winless in Chile, bad calls going against us, unlucky reds that put our game in jeopardy, mental gaps that cost us the W. By breaking this mold, I think our guys see the product of grit and focus to win in adverse environments....and more importantly, that we don't have to be the equipo pijama. Luckily, our neighboring nations also played to Ecuador's benefit in the table.

Next game we need to tackle the next "cuco" - an undefeated Brazil.

If we win, we're assured at least a 5th place slot (I think). We are in uncharted waters with these guys, and it'll be critical for us to dig deep and play like there was no tomorrow.

Definitely ,these 2 games were games where the kids gained so much confidence and can see what playing with cojones can get you,a very difficult hurdle to get over, now it’s just continuing this trend and try to take it further and gel together more.let’s take this cuco on next .

Precisely, brother. This game ideally turns the tide. The confidence boost can be enough for our guys to see the big objective literally at their grasp - win and stamp that passport to Qatar. We're so so so close.

At this point we should get the momentum going and aim for 8 points in these next 4 games. Minimum!

We practically eliminated Chile. At this point.

Agreed - carry the momentum to earn the highest attainable point haul. Settling for anything less is a recipe for disaster.

I'm extremely happy with this win because we shut up Chilean media and gave the Chilean players a piece of humble pie.

I’m not familiar with Chile’s topography/elevation but the game yesterday made me think we should stop playing in the altitude altogether.

They're still in the mix technically but from their remaining schedule we were supposed to be the most "winnable" game. There's 12 points up for grabs left. I don't see them beating Brazil away but if they win their remaining games that'll leave them with 25 points. They play Argentina next but they'll be without Vidal. They play Bolivia in La Paz. Bolivia can obtain a positive result in Venezuela and if they do their match against Chile will be a final.

Realistically the game we can clinch a berth to the world cup is against Peru in Lima which would be fitting given how the Russa qualifiers played out for both. I saw their match against Venezuela yesterday and their flawed team on the defensive end. I don't want to see Alfaro settle for a tie. That strategy is acceptable against Brazil and Argentina. Even against Chile yesterday given the circumstances entering the game but we shouldn't get in the habit of conceding possession and not being aggressive If we're playing away from Quito.

Sarmiento really impressed me. He still has a lot to improve but the dude's a baller. He's a more complete player than Plata. Tactically he's more advanced than any of our young guys. He'll only keep getting better.

The virtues of developing in Europe...at 19 he's still an unpolished gem, which would basically allow us to see his development month-by-month in England as he is on the roster at Brighton. If he gets minutes on the pitch in the PL, it's game over...this kid will be a monster if he keeps his mind set on training and improving while getting play time. The same goes for many of our youngest players. Their improvement in form is absolutely correlated to their minutes on the pitch at the club level.

So much can happen with young guys that derails development, but if he stays on a good path, the sky is the limit.

This team has so much potential that playing for ties is a mental and tactical injustice to the squad. That mental pressure to win is crucial to the guys developing a killer instinct. It's what separates a Bayern-like mentality from a Delfin. Of course there's so much more to it than that, but all the best teams (and best players) don't sit on narrow margins to define a matchday- they just keep on pressing.

Playing in the premier league requires discipline and hard work. Unless you're world class teams don't tolerate undisciplined behavior. You simply won't get minutes and you'll see your way out of the league if you don't stay focused. As you said he's a clear example of developing in Europe. You just see the difference. Plata is a great player and has a bright future. When he's on he can be a nightmare for the opposing defense. Tactically Alfaro is limited in how he can use him. Sarmiento is a more versatile player. He can play on either wing and can operate through the middle. Defensively he's more advanced too. Plata will improve as he matures but right now he's best coming off the bench.

We're a young team. Castillo, Torres, Hincapie, Pervis, Moises, Franco, Mendez, Sarmiento, Plata Estrada, Jordy, Angelo Preciado, Palacios, Rojas, Cuco, Reasco, Cifu, Washington Corozo, Nilson, Campana, Porozo, Alcivar, Julio, Ramirez are all under 25 and have been called up to the national team within the last year. The sad reality is that within a couple of years we may no longer even be talking about them. Not every young player pans out.

Sarmiento surprised me with how well he played in the middle. He was good defensively and you didn't see him be lazy. There were times he ran to where our CBs were and even yelled at Estupiñan to stay back because he was covering the Chilean fullback. On the offensive end, the kid cut through Chile's defense easily and it took a lot for the Chilean defense to bring the kid down.

It's true not all young players pan out but I hope that those that don't ascend to that next level can still be very good subs for us. Depth is what separates a great team from a good team.

Excellent points all around, and I agree - not all will pan out in the long term, but I do side with Allan_Somewhere regarding depth. Having options is of utmost necessity for us. In today's footballing landscape, a deep roster in key positions is the sustainability requirement that we'll need to fulfill in order to stay competitive in the long term. Some of these guys might be early bloomers who fizzle by their mid-20's while others will be late bloomers, and some might simply plateau and never be able to make the next big leap.

I have high hopes for Plata, Sarmiento, Hincapie, Estupiñan, and M. Caicedo - that gives our team a neat spine to build around.

I look back at prior WCQ cycles dating back to 2002 and we had a core group for almost 14 years of high-quality football...and that was dating back to a time when Ecuador was still in pure development lacking infrastructure, reliable feeder systems, and budget to think "long term".

If we can keep and support this current crop, whatever comes up as we keep moving ahead will only help Ecuadorian football for generations to come.

    Sustainability!
