I dislike the P in P commercials due to the commercials being the larger picture, not the smaller, but NBC completely cut away from live matches, and when they came back to the match, 3-4 minutes had elapsed. Fortunately, there were no goals scored, but some substitutions had been made, and it was all disconcerting seeing some different players on the pitch. If any goals had been scored, I would have had to replace my TV...
If NBC Sports was known for one good thing it was their soccer coverage. So I guess they had to ruin that.
There was a time when interrupting soccer games with commercials was the norm in American television. I think that the first game without commercials on English-language TV in the United States wasn't until June 1993 (United States-Germany at the U.S. Cup). Of course, lots and lots of games were on Univision without commercials, which is why I usually watched that even though I don't speak Spanish.
I've occasionally watched some Austin games on our local station. Midway through the half, they drop in a reduced game image wrapped by an ad. I suspect that most folks' TVs can handle it fine now, but mine? Not so much. I've loved soccer on TV the past almost 20 years, but it might be threatening to slip backwards again.
