Slonina is really having a great season. Hard to believe a 17 year old keeper is playing as consistently well as he is. One to keep an eye on for sure!

    Outplayed Ochoa last night.

I mean, I like Ochoa, but I don't cry when players like that choose to not play for the USMNT.

Our pipeline continues to churn out players.

We do also have a cohort of young keepers in Europe.
Its hard to really say much about them, because who's watching U19 or U18 teams in Europe. But one player that the keeping experts seem to like is Alex Borto of Fulham. If Slonina "graduates quickly" to USMNT camps...........then Borto probably moves in with the U20s. It would be Dewsnup of RSL, Carrera of FCD, and Borto of Fulham.

Now that everybody knows Slonina, who is next?
It could be Jeff Dewsnup of Real Salt Lake/Real Monarchs.
Big game from him this past weekend. Colorado Switchbacks had 28 shots and 68% possession. Save after save from Dewsnup, including this penalty. Game finished 1-1. The head coach of Real Monarchs is former RSL CB Jamison Olave. :)

Turner with another awkward and soft goal (1:25). He isnt the same shot stopper on crosses/headers. Id guess the timing and reading of the shot is different for him. This goal reminded me of the one he gave up against Chicago about a month ago (also at 1:25).

This is too simplistic and don't agree with the guys assessments and conclusions. Not sure any assessment can exclude cleaning up behind the defense. Turner doesn't score well on collecting crosses, coming off his line on 1v1s, and clearing through balls.

For shot stopping, id include footwork be added. Id rate Turner very high for footwork, but much lower on positioning. He overplays the near post way too much when the ball is wide and doesn't adjust adequately to movements when the ball is central.

With keeping this would probably decide it for me. It is such an odd position for me to rate. The caveat would be if the type of teams are completely different as with Dest who could play a winger like Davies does with Canada for a lesser team but with a possession team is a defender. A keeper for Bayern has different needs so if they are somewhat close in leagues but go to the team you'd expect it may come down to matchups for the US. If we are expecting to dominate then us Steffen. If we will be defending for our lives use Turner. In between toss a coin.

I watched Vicente Reyes of Atlanta United the other day. He was young, but I don’t think he embarrassed himself either. Promising that he was getting minutes for AU2. Furthermore, Rocco Rios Novos has played a lot for AU2 (he’s a dual national for Argentina), although not eligible for u20s as he’s a 2002, but he’s been solid.

I saw that Jonathan Mennell, 2003, started for Loudoun United the other day.

Also, Chris Brady, 2004, was highly regarded at the start of the year, and he’s been making the bench a good bit for Chicago Fire... but he hasn’t played much this year.

Gavin Beavers, 2005, is supposed to also be good for RSL. But he’s not played a ton. And he’s super young.

Please, please keep these kinds of USL Championship updates coming. I like to watch a few of these matches on my ESPN+ feed every so often, but I want to focus on USMNT prospects when I watch. I'll have to see if this game is one that's available from over the weekend.

Man, put Turner's shot stopping ability with Steffan's feet and command of his box and you have an A+ keeper

One of the big names at the youth levels right now.

Another one of the high profile keepers at this U17 camp is also really well thought of. Nick Holliday. 15 years old and already playing first team games in the USL.

JT seems like he is going to be a mls journeyman, and that’s fine. Gotta have those for a successful league. Hopefully emi Ochoa pushes him in a couple years.

Two of the young guys to keep an eye on.
On the youth boards they're hearing that Borto has been called up to the US U20 squad for the Revelations Cup. We'll see. Las moved to Fulham from the Chicago Fire.

You know, I had kind of written off JT as a subpar shot stopper ... but according to ASA, he's been very good this year. The #3 most valuable keeper in the league by minute behind Turner and Blake.

Keepers peak much later; I think it is a bit weird that we focus so much on teenage prospects when the Donnarummas are fairly rare.

Shrug. Its the same reason that we don't talk about good adult professional left backs in MLS, but talk more about John Tolkin, Jonathan Gomez, etc.

People are looking for high-end potential. The "next Joe Scally."

In the goalkeeping equation right now, that's Gabe Slonina.

hes had a very good year overall I agree, and he was even on a pretty good steak. Those are the ones people remember though in a bad way. Hopefully he can put it behind him and have a strong year next year. He’s on the earthquakes , he won’t be short of practice that’s for sure. If he got a CC call I’d understand, but if he didn’t I would too

I mean seems like he’s worth a call up for January camp if Slonia is going to be with the U20s. We know what we have with Turner, Johnson, Guzan, and Hamid so no harm in getting a look at someone new whose a bit younger.

Steffen just signed a long term with Man City to 2025. From a soccer standpoint........not great. From a lifestyle standpoint, Id have to see the numbers. If hes making EPL top 10 goalkeeper money to sit on a bench, business is business and that's understandable, but it seems he bit on Pep's sweet whispers to be a content benchwarmer.

Like being Marcus Mariota in the NFL. You're the best backup quarterback in the NFL, you probably could start somewhere,.........but you're still a backup quarterback.
