Altrincham FC. I've always thought the sheaves and pulley wheel in their badge looked - from a distance or at small size - like a pair of hands and a ball. Of course, that's just the 'keeper in me.
MLS is really failing in NY. I know this has nothing to do with NYCFC but one comment that I always keep on seeing is that NYRB is failing because of the "NY" in the name but that if they change the name to "NJ" people will care. I don't know where they get that idea but it sure made me LOL. I really don't know what MLS can do with these two teams. It is almost impossible because of politics for NYCFC to get a stadium done in the place they have been looking at. They can move to another location but then we will get the similar comments we see of NYRB of "they aren't in NYC so I won't support them". Plus there is also the fact that both Red Bull and CFG don't treat their MLS teams like they are suppose to. It's like if they forget they exist. NY and its surrounding areas are loaded with pro teams from other sports so that definitely doesn't help, IMO. Maybe moving one team out of NY to a place that doesn't have that many pro teams would help?
I know at least one small part of it is that neither team is uniquely a New York side. Instead of either being an East coast counterpart to, say, LAFC, the two Gotham sides are essentially satellite franchises of a larger soccer corporation. That's tainted the product to some fans and makes it a different selling job to the populace versus the ground-up efforts of LAFC, Cincy, and others.
Would it change anything if someone else takes over? I really think it wouldn't. RB has been successful, sportwise, winning several SS but falling short of lifting the MLS Cup. That hasn't changed anything when it comes to support for that team. NYCFC is in the same boat.
NYFC has been more successful on attendance, at least the first few years, but interest have been waning the last few years. NY is really a difficult market, and front offices have been lackluster too.
Lazy front office, an underwhelming team, even though they can win handsomely at times, and a terrible (some would say humiliating) decision to play matches at Red Bull Arena. I don't think being part of the Man City group has tainted the product, thanks largely to the fans indifference about Man City. It's not like we're solely in the business of being a feeder team
Maybe, if you mean the mayor. DeBlasio has been something of a disaster for the city and will be replaced by Adams shortly. I don't know if Adams has a position on a soccer stadium in the Bronx but if he's in favor of it, it's a lot more likely to happen.
Well this old Tweet is promising. I want to bring a #worldclass #soccer team to #Brooklyn and a new stadium. Why build in Belmont when you can go to #Brownsville or #BedStuy?— Eric Adams (@BKBoroHall) June 4, 2015
Just to note for the uninformed, PO'd is a Trump partisan, and the day after Adams takes office, PO'd will consider him a "disaster for the city" also.
Well, not to make this overly political but Adams is a former police officer whose policies will be closer to Bloomberg or Giuliani's, than DeBlasio's. That will be good for the city generally, especially getting crime under control. Whether that includes a stadium for NYC or not is open to question but if CFG is willing to pay for it, I think Adams is the sort of guy who could get it done over neighborhood opposition.
Crime is under control, mainly through tightening up on gun control. The Supreme Court may put the kybosh on that.
Huh? As you note there is an upcoming SCOTUS case on NYC gun control laws. But that has nothing to do with the big increase in crime. DeBlasio got rid of "stop and frisk" which took a lot of guns off the street. Eliminating cash bail for most offenses has been a godsend for criminals. Thus the stories you see about people who have been arrested a dozen or more times this year. Bringing it back to soccer, the city is unlikely to subsidize a new stadium for NYCFC. But if the owners are willing to put up the money for it, a mayor who wants it can cut through a lot of red tape and expedite it. In the tweet above Adams wanted it in Brooklyn, where he was borough president. He may be supportive of the Bronx now.
All the crime stats suggest that crime is down on 2020 and gun arrests are up considerably. It may not be down to pre- pandemic levels yet but it's headed that way.
NYCFC will get a stadium eventually. Remember the exhausting bi-polar process to get DC United's stadium built. It took what 12-15 years?
Yeah, I think NYCFC will eventually have their own stadium in the city. The main impediments to getting one built are financing and regulatory hoops. CFG are rich enough to pay for the stadium and fill all the various outstretched hands. If a mayor makes something a priority and the public is onboard, he'll get it through the various agency approvals and judges probably won't stand in the way during the inevitable court challenges.
