I just heard discussion on this kid. He is now 17 and supposedly is making real progress. If he can beat Sandez for the LB spot at Boca, he will seem like the real deal.

We were linked with Frank Fabbra in the last transfer window. I think he is a poor player. No idea how to play his position. He has been ousted of his spot by a young player by the name of Valentin Barco.

His shock of red hair is striking enough but what really is striking is his maturity. He has already been an integral part of Argentine youth teams winning trophies and scoring vital goals from left back.

Originally a left winger he was moved back by a youth coach and has the stamina of a prime Zanetti. Up and down, down and up. With his skills as a winger he is more than comfortable on the ball keeping it under control with an ease of getting out under pressure and finding a target. He has a great initial burst to get away from defenders and attackers

Loves to get forward and come inside into the box to take a pretty powerful left foot shot. He needs to work on his right foot though so he can go both ways around a defender or out from a press. While aggression is good it does lead him to going to ground early or getting caught out of position.

With time his reading of when to press harder or drop off or not commit himself will improve. He has shown signs of that already which indicates he processes what his coaches tell him and what he learns during a game with relative ease. So if he continues to work on his understanding of defending the box, watching runs off the ball and his right foot as well we will have our modern full back ready to take over from Tagliafico and Acuna. His height will always be an issue at time but if his positioning is correct he can still use his frame to halt an attacker or contest the secondary ball.

Looking for a comparison he reminds me of Alba and a young Lahm. He has already been scouted by some of the biggest vultures in Europe. I sincerely hope he has the sense to stay at Boca and develop now that Roman has his plans to focus more on youth than imports come to fruition.

Juve seem keen on this kid. They have extended him. He is ridiculously fast and has great skill. He’s only 18 and may make the leap to the senior team. He’s dubbed as the new ADM.

18-year-old forward Giuliano Siemone has impressed for the Rojiblancos during the pre-season, and might get call up to Atletico Madrid senior team this year. Hopefully he is a little better than Gio

30 domestic players called-up to train with the U-20 NT:

Why is this bum still in charge of the team, though? They should have fired his ass after the Olympic flop...

    ------

On a different note -- Claudio "el Diablo" Echeverri, the kid who made international headlines years ago when he tore it up in a youth tournament held in Europe at age 11 (he even scored 4 goals on Juventus) and has since been stunning spectators in River's youth divisions, has been called-up to train with the U-17 side. Interesting to see his promise slowly begin to materialize.

Recently he gave an interview in which he stated that he trains weekly with el Burrito Ortega... now he'll be learning from Aimar as well. Incredible tutors for the kid!

I went back just to look over some of the players from the last 10 years(When this thread was started) and some hits and misses. I looked at Mariano Konyk, he was born in BsAs and moved to Spain, where he played for Valencia youth teams and even Barcelona. I think he played for a couple clubs here and there. Well, he retired from the game at 22 because of injuries. I guess it tells you how difficult it is to make it. Not many kids blossom from “prodigies” to world class talents.

Even players like Coco, where there was a ton of hype about him as a kid, never became world class. He had moments but did he ever hit those heights? Sad to say no.

Classic! I actually remember that response. But glad we were talking about him in some light. Glad he did get out of Madrid.

Speaking of RM, does anyone know what happened to Franchu — the Argentine that Zidane randomly made debut back in 2017??

A quick Google search shows he signed with second division side Eibar back in July, but idk if he’s even getting playing time.

I had completely forgotten about this kid... not that there were ever really high hopes for him tbh, but his surprise appearance in RM’s first team came out of nowhere. If I recall correctly, he was even one of the first pibes Zizou promoted from Castilla.

He’s still only 23, so who knows, maybe he still has something to offer

Just looking around, it appears he’s getting some minutes. He was starting for a game or two , but he’s mostly coming off the bench.

We have to ask, when was the last time Madrid had an absolute crack coming out of their academy? They’re not exactly known for producing talents. They just cut checks, and buy players with potential or world class players that are already established.

The most important thing for many kids is playing time. Learning on the pitch and analyzing afterwards with coaches. So many of our kids who go abroad end up kicking their heels.

All it does is stagnate their development, damage confidence and their mental state. Examples like de Paul and Tagliafico bouncing back from awful stints at Murcia and Valencia are rare. Too often our players are being used as cash cows without any thought to the individual.

Federico Gomes Gerth, the 17-year-old goalkeeper who received a surprise call-up from Scaloni, expressed his shock and excitement over the opportunity:

@SupaMario what can you tell us about your boy? Has he even made his professional debut with Tigre yet?

He has yet to make his debut. We fighting to get back up, so to give a kid that much pressure would not be fair. By the way. We beat Chaca and Chicago in the last two weeks, so, yeah, that is always a bonus.

It is interesting though. Felipe Zenobio, who is 21 and is the #1 also has a bit of promise and did not get called but he congratulated the kid. Zebobio is about 6 feet tall and Gomes at 17 is towering over him.

He’s been constantly in the youth teams, 15,17. I just hope he is not pushed too soon, too quickly.

Yeah, he was born in Salta and moved to the States and lived here till he was 6 or so. He might have a green card, but who knows. But you can probably check the US forum, there is probably a 10 page discussion about him. :ROFLMAO:

I just realized how old I’ll be if this kid does grow up and becomes a talent….:(

Thiago Almada is joining Atlanta United (MLS) as the "Designated Player" and occupy a roster spot. I guess he is Ezequiel Barco replacement.

I was REALLY high on Almada as an up-n-coming player for Velez. He is still only 20, and could really become a player in the next 2-3 years. But at Atlanta??!?!

I really wouldn’t hold my breath for him to turn into anything special. The kid comes from a lot of money. The motivation of getting up early and having to the duties of a footballer will likely be missing. For most, football is a way to get your family out of poverty. For Benjamin, it will likely just be a game. So, other young footballers will definitely go after him. He better be ready for that.

Reminder, his father made his debut with the first team when he was 15. Benjamin is currently 13. Now, I don’t think anybody will expect him to be there in a couple years but he’ll have big shoes to fill.

Furthermore, the father passing down the genetics hardly ever happens. Becoming a footballer and being one at the highest level is rare. Veron and his father come to mind. Cholo was a great footballer and his sons are doing well for themselves. In Italy, Maldini and that lineage did well. Zidane’s kids became mediocre and never lived up to the hype.

I remember Redondo’s eldest son, Fernando Jr., was with our reserves some years ago, and do you know where he is now? Yeah, neither do I.

But I’ll be rooting for the kid. I hope he prospers.

At least Kun is approaching it with the right mentality and seems he won’t let Benja slack:

"Lo tengo que ir a ver porque soy bastante exigente y bastante honesto, por como juega. Si lo voy a ir a ver, no me gusta ir y que no intente o le dé igual. Si va a querer jugar y le gusta, lo banco y vamos. Si va a jugar de hobby no me va", siguió Agüero.
In the article there’s also a social media snapshot of Maradona reminding him that “there are no friendlies”.

So maybe he has a different mentality instilled in him by his mentors. But I completely hear you that the children of great footballers hardly ever prosper.. hell, even brothers are often miles apart in talent. Look at Pablito and Andres Aimar, or even twins like Guillermo and Gustavo. As you mention, in the case of the children, there’s often also less motivation due to a comfortable upbringing and/or falling for the pressure of being compared to a near impossible standard.

However looking on the flipside, if he has a very strong mentality he can use the legendary status of the two generations before him as motivation to train as hard as possible in order to match or surpass the achievements of his predecessors. I know, easier said than done, but you can transform that into a motivation.

With that said, I’m not placing any expectations on him whatsoever. Every case is different — relationships mean nothing in football. It all comes down to individual mentality, determination, and natural technical conditions, none of which can be bought or fully passed down. I do wish him the best though, it would be cool to see the legacy continue
