Michael Beale is someone that deserves a chance as a first team coach for a decent team. I wonder if someone will take a punt on him (probably not). Wouldn't be the worst idea for him to take over at Rangers, when Gerrard eventually moves on.

He already is the first team coach at Rangers. A big part of why Gerrard is doing well is surrounding himself with good people. It's a nice little package deal.

I meant first team Head Coach as oppose to an Assistant, assuming that's something he wants to do

Gascoigne played from 84 until 04, of course at his peak it was the 90's, Lampard from 95 until 16, Scholes 93 until 13, Le Tissier from 86-2003, Hoddle 75-95, Joe Cole 98-18.

What 'era' are you talking about exactly? Here is a reminder of how good Gascoinge was:-

    Le Tissier was no slouch:-

I have never seen ANYBODY score goals like Le Tissier!

But of course Gascoigne and Le Tissier are English so they can only do 'kick and rush' right!?

I'm not sure I've Ever seen one player score so many of the sort of goals that Le Tissier scored throughout his career, I can only imagine how people will be thinking of him now if he was Brazilian, unfortunately for Le-Tiss though he is English and therefore is incapable of doing anything other than 'kick and run'!!

Literally nobody has claimed that English players can only play kick and rush but OK.

That's all that players without 'technical ability' are capable of surely?

You have reading-comprehension issues so severe that this discussion is not worth continuing.

Well respected German Journalist Rafa Honigstein, seems to agree with what a few people including myself have mentioned here.

Eddie Howe is the new boss at Newcastle! So that’s at least another English manager temporarily in the Premier League.

I fear he might get the boot at the end of the season, for a perceived bigger name, if/when he keeps them up.

I think there's undeniably a glass ceiling for English/British managers. There's a very limited list of exceptions in recent memory: Brendan Rodgers (Liverpool had just finished 8th), Frank Lampard (taking a punt on a club legend during a transfer ban), David Moyes (jingoistically hand-picked by Ferguson).

It's only a glass ceiling if they deserve it, and I'm not sure that they do. The top teams can go out and get proven managers, they don't need to gamble on someone who might be decent.

That's sort of the point though. Nobody's disputing that the top Premier League teams don't need to gamble, but that's what differentiates our situation from e.g. Germany's, where the top teams are much more prepared to hire from within the league because they can't just reach out and grab Carlo Ancelotti in a vague attempt to qualify for the Europa League. It's how coaches like Klopp ended up proving themselves as elite coaches (and nobody could be sure that he deserved it in advance either), and the reason why nobody in the vein of Eddie Howe has had a chance.

Of course, not all of them would make the step up successfully - that's the same as anywhere else. The fact that nobody even gets the chance to sink or swim is the difference, and the reason why English coaches are ALL still viewed as being a level below.

Good post, there is no doubt in my mind that Eddie Howe deserves a chance, what he did at Bournemouth was incredible, people need to remember the 'level' of club Bournemouth are, they are a small town club with a tiny stadium and small support and Howe had them taking on (and often beating) English giants. He is of course on a 'loser' by taking on Newcastle who, at the end of the day, are a VERY poor team that is likely to get relegated. Even if Howe keeps them up I have very little doubt that the owners will ditch Howe before he has a chance to get his hands on any of their new found wealth. It was all too easy blaming Newcastle's bad performances on Bruce but its obvious to most that the reason that they are down near the bottom of the league is because the team is simply 'not good enough' for Premier League football. For me the standout manager this year is Potter, this guy is seriously good, Brighton is such a well run club, again not traditionally a 'giant' of English football but slowly but surely they are really establishing themselves among the 'big boys' and having an English manager that is performing well might just be a blessing in disguise for them because being English means that he is less likely to get 'poached' by more glamourous clubs.

Gerrard in at Villa, along with Michael Beale.

I've been impressed with Gerrard management especially in the Old Firm fixtures, (In which he has a very good record 7-1-4, unbeaten in his last 2 seasons) where he's been very good tactically.

I've also watched a fair bit of their Europa league campaign in the last couple of years and thought they looked pretty good home and away, especially in fixtures against the likes of Braga, Porto, Benfica and Feyenoord.

The Scottish league gets a lot of stick down south (obviously some warranted) but winning the league unbeaten and only conceding 13 goals is a fantastic achievement.

I think he has a pretty good squad and ambitious owners at Villa, will certainly be interesting to see how he fairs.

Lampard has apparently pulled out of the Norwich job so I wonder if he will go for the Rangers job instead.
