Agree. I really hate scorebugs that don't show the teams colors, no matter the sport.

I don't think it has anything to do with the remote since I'm not touching the remote at all when the problem happens. It's a mystery. After I get through more WCQ, I might hook my Firestick up again and see if the problem happens with that.

In other news, I learned a long time ago from a DTV engineer when DTV had the rights to Europa League that the federations are horrible with actually following the audio channels that they send to production teams, but man ESPN just can't get the audio right in the early games for the first couple days of WCQ. Almost every CAF qualifier started with stadium sound only for the first 10 minutes, then the audio would sometimes have French and English at the sane time, before the English was correct.

ESPN showing EFL Cup matches this week:
Tues - 4 of 10 matches to be aired live
    Weds - 3 of 6 matches live

    upload_2021-9-20_22-10-19.png

Am I wrong but didn't ESPN show more, if not all, matches live in past seasons?

Or if this is in fact .what they've been doing for years, is this just the confirmation that Arsenal are just no longer the team that broadcasters wanna choose? Especially when they're playing against teams 2 leagues below them in the pyramid.

But more generally speaking, what is the limiting factor for only showing 40-50% of third round matches that are being played? Is it purely an ESPN decision, or is it that the EFL is not doing international feeds for roughly half of the matches, so ESPN couldn't show Arsenal-Wimbledon even if they wanted to?

ESPN distributes what they're given. Nothing more, nothing less.

That’s what I was gleaning. So there’s a limit on what matches are covered/provided, which is a function of the EFL’s budget? Or the UK TV broadcasters’ interest/ability to cover/produce a X number of matches in a round?

    I'm not thrilled about it.

I missed the Brentford game (could not find a stream) and I'm willing to bet I'll have to hard time finding one for Arsenal today.

I guess this was the downside to getting good draws.......made them less attractive for TV lol.

My random complaint: ESPN has so many La Liga-related shows listed under "on demand" you can't pull up a match from a week ago unless you search for it in the search bar.

The audio was seconds ahead of the video for the Italy x Spain NL semifinal on espn2. Pretty close to unwatchable.

Yeah that was extremely annoying to hear Ian talk about a potential goal right before I saw it on my screen.

Seems to be the worst its ever been on multiple networks since about August for some reason. Feels like close to 50% of matches I've watched have had at least patches of audio issues.

Reading this article, it looks like the plan for ESPN is to wait until there's enough cord cutters to start affecting cable subscriptions to affect their bottom line before moving to more of a streaming platform. The good news is that as long as Disney keeps making money off of cable TV subscriptions, then the price of ESPN+ will remain reasonable. Although the number of cord cutters is high, the number of people subscribed to cable who continue to give ESPN billions of dollars remains relatively high enough to keep ESPN from moving to streaming.

As an aside, the article mentions potentially paying $30/month for ESPN for streaming, and I can't find anyone who would pay that amount for ESPN.

If I am not an ESPN TV subscriber, will I still be able to watch the USA-Costa Rica match on ESPN + Wednesday night?

I'm behind on WCQ and just starting US-Costa Rica now. I set the DVR for ESPN2 but this is the second time this round I jumped to ESPN+ because ESPN thinks it is necessary to run the news crawl. Everyone under 30 can barely take their eyes away from their phones so they could look at whatever they need for news crawl info. The rest of us don't need a crawl.

My ESPN+ picture is not clear on my Samsung Smart tv. The ball has a tail to it when it's passed or shot and the players also have a blurry image when they run. Any ideas? This does not occur with ESPN+ on my Galaxy S10 Android or with other apps like Hulu Live or Paramount Plus on the same tv.

What does it matter though if you are watching a match from last Wednesday? Do you still have to finish watching the Giants-Dodgers series as well? ;)

You may check the TV set's image settings. Avoid motion smoothing / enhancement.

I'm not going to speak for OP, but the main problem for me with the crawl is that it is distracting and takes up screen space. The fact that football has continual action and the prevalence of wide angle view for watching play develop makes the competing movement of the crawl more distracting than watching other sports. It is hard to take in the whole screen view that is important for watching football with the crawl moving in the bottom of the screen.

In baseball or gridiron the games move more slowly and actual play is short so the crawl isn't competing as much with the actual action.

Basketball is similar to football in terms of more continual action, but I think the smaller playing surface & fewer players to watch also makes the crawl less annoying. Camera shots are closer to the bodies and faces of the players so there are not as many "things" competing with your eye for attention.

Thank god most of the streaming services haven't started putting the crawl on matches. When I knew a game on ESPN or Fox would have a crawl I would always watch the Univision/Telemundo telecasts if available since they never seem to use crawls.

If people are moving from satellite, Comcast, Spectrum to services like Hulu, YTTV and Sling, ESPN subscriber counts shouldn't matter, right? Those people are still paying for ESPN, but just via a different provider.

    Indeed.

This is the problem with a la carte services. If you're paying $15/mo for HBO, $30/mo for ESPN, another $20 for the Sinclair RSN app, at some point, $10 or whatever for Discovery+ and $10 or whatever for Disney+, you're better off paying for a traditional package via satellite, cable, IPTV or streaming. Even if you're paying for 200+ channels and maybe watching 15-25 of them on a regular basis, you're still getting a better deal...and you don't have to switch apps all the time.

The only real differences are that this is more portable for transients such as younger people and students and you can cancel various things more easily. People who split time between a "summer house" and a "winter house" also may not want to have two separate channel lineups.

I don't mind paying for the apps for additional stuff like various soccer leagues or bonus shows like The Mandalorian, but I can't imagine having that as my main "go-to" method. When a bunch of these apps launched, they had discount offers. I did early offers for Peacock, Disney+ and Paramount+, but I'm not sure I would have done them for regular price.

It also helps that I got a real good offer on Disney+ and my HBO Max is included with my internet package...but would I pay for those individually? Probably not.

Somewhat of a fail by ESPN leading up to tonight's huge WCQ of USA-MEX...

Game KO was 9:10 and ESPN2 was scheduled to broadcast starting at 9:00 ET. But they stuck with a somewhat lopsided college football game of Cincy vs So Floridaj, right up until 9:09 when they rushed in right before KO, missing any semblance of pregame, anthem, etc.

To compound this poor coverage, the streaming shows on ESPN+ also sacrificed about 10 mins. The pregame stream there ended at 8:57 and the match stream started at about 9:07. They joined a poignant and excellent rendition of the SSB midstream.

Why didn't they just extend ESPN+'s pregame show to fill the gap that ESPN2 left?
Why didn't they just leave the college football game at 9:00 as they had scheduled?

In 2021, I found this pretty surprising and very disappointing.

I think your highly underestimating how unprecedented this was to leave a college football game with the 5th ranked team in the country only up 10 points (not at all a lopsided game) and kick them to ESPNNews to switch to the USMNT. Frankly if it was a bigger supported college team in that spot they probably stay with the game and the US game starts on ESPNNews. Almost always ESPN stays with the event currently going on and the one starting up gets moved to the lower station in the pecking order.

IDK, it's hard for me to see how our national team's biggest rivalry in the biggest tournament in the world doesn't trump the college boys.

Regardless, ESPN could've done a better job of juggling their broadcasts, especially not having about 10 mins of completely dead air, when we're well into the age of streaming.

LOL, the college football game didn't even run past kickoff yet you're on here saying they should have cut away from a live event just so they could give you pregame and the anthem. The televised sports world does not revolve around the soccer fan in this country. Far from it.
