Frankly, the Esteves red card didn’t affect the game, so no harm, no foul. Arr, arr.

Acosta was also part of the media availability yesterday, which is usually a good indicator that the player is starting.

Andre Rawls posted his 6th clean sheet in 16 games for Phoenix Rising last night. Got some love from their social media too:

With how Irwin played against Seattle, and how Rawls has been performing in Phoenix, wonder if the Rapids may shop Irwin this offseason and keep Rawls as the full time backup to Yarbrough

Backup goalkeepers are a dime a dozen in this league. I'm all for shopping Irwin, and if Rawls is the guy great. But if Rawls isn't the guy still shop Irwin and find a guy.

    Plus there's still Abe Rodriguez.

PRO included the non-review on Esteves in this week's recap. Starts about 7:57

Mayaka - Did not play for Kenya today in their loss to Mali, eliminating them from qualifying for the World Cup

Kaye - Started and went 69 minutes for Canada in their scoreless draw with Jamaica

Acosta - Played a full 90 in the U.S.'s 1-0 loss to Panama. But did not play well.

Borrowed from the coach tracking thread:

8 points (1.33ppg) out of the following games to set a Rapids record:
    @ Salt Lake
    Vs Seattle
    Vs Portland
    @ New England
    @ Houston
    Vs LAFC

Rapids need to win against FSL to retain the cup. Kaye and Acosta will be returning - and based on Acosta's last performance for the USMNT, he probably won't be seeing any minutes on Wednesday against Costa Rica and will be fully rested. Kaye went 77min against Mexico, and 69min against Jamaica. Hard to say, but he'll probably get decent minutes again when Canada plays Panama Wednesday.

Either way, even if we don't play either of them, based on how 10 men Rapids handled Minnesota there's a very real chance we retain the cup this year. FSL's last four games are 1 goal wins at home against Seattle and LA Gals, a 1 goal loss at Austin, and a 5 goal loss at Portland.

I would actually be more disappointed to have a top 2 finish in the conference and not retain the cup. For me, this is an absolute MUST WIN game. Assume the Rapids play to win the cup - and do so - that's 3 points.

Not taking any games for granted, but Houston should also be another "easy" 3 points.

Based on recent results and form, LAFC could also be a winnable match. They are on the struggle bus this season.

Forcing a tie twice (or a win once) against any of Seattle, Portland, New England, or LAFC - while a tall order - is still also reasonable if we want to solidify ourselves as a top 2-3 western conference team.

There's a pathway to 10+ points in this next game stretch. It's gonna be tough, and we're playing some tough teams. The question remains whether or not we see the team that came out down a man against Minnesota, or the team that was down 3-0 at halftime against Seattle.

The other problem is the schedule. Starting Saturday we play 5 games in 2 weeks, then get a week break before LAFC. Sat in Salt Lake, Wed at home, Sat at home, Wed in Boston, and Sunday in Houston is a brutal stretch. At least the only significant travel is that midweek game back East.

Thankfully everyone in the league has a pretty packed schedule. Interestingly, New England and Houston are the only teams who only have 5 games remaining instead of 6.

Portland and New England for example will be on their 3rd game in 7 days when we play them. Not saying it won't be tough, as we will be on our 3rd game in 7 days for Portland, and 4th game in 9 days for New England.

Thankfully we have a lot of pieces that can rotate in and out. Our midfield and attacking options have a lot of depth that can fill in. My biggest concern for minute management is the back line. Don't have a lot of great depth there....

I'm reading a book on soccer analytics called "Football Hackers" by Christoph Biermann. Stan Kroenke comes up after a discussion on Arsenal's extensive data analytics operation. After mentioning all of his teams (to include the Rapids), at the 2016 Sloan Sports Conference he says, "I was always interested in Moneyball. One of Billy Beane's heroes happened to be our manager Arsene Wegner. Arsene has an undergraduate degree in economics and has always had that analytical thing going on. Player analytics is something that goes across these different teams." Earlier in the book, Padraig Smith also makes a cameo as well.

That sounds interesting. My indoor soccer team got a mention in Tyler Hamilton's book about drugs cheating cycling, called "The Great Race". It is a great book.

Sounds like Acosta had a miserable game against Panama.

From a Washington Post article: "(Coach) lineup decisions had a lot to do with it, a pronounced drop-off from the performances submitted by Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah and Weston McKennie against Jamaica. Kellyn Acosta struggled in all areas Sunday."

The podcasts I listened to thought Acosta was bad too. I didn't think so, although I had people over watch it in casual more than analysis mode, so what do I know?

For what it's worth, SofaScore's formula or whatever they use to generate player ratings gave Kellyn the best score out of all the USMNT players in the Panama game with: 75% pass accuracy, 3/10 crosses, 2/5 long balls, 2/3 successful dribbles, 4/6 ground duels won, 1 interception, 1 tackle, 1 shot block.

I disagree that he was the best player on the pitch (I think Zimmerman and Adams were the strongest performers), but I feel the amount of abuse Acosta's getting online in the usual places is way overboard.

He also had a really rough first 10-15 minutes, which tends to set the opinion of a player unless they have a very visible reversal later in the game.

For what it’s worth, he - according to Andrew Wiebe - was ranked 30th.

I don’t know if he will be eligible next year, as he turns 22 on October 6 next year.

    **EDIT**
Galvan will not be eligible next year:

His skills definitely would put him higher if he had more time to be seen. I think he just hasn't had enough exposure for those making the decisions.
