Montréal vs New England, Wed, Sep 29, 7:30PM revolutionsoccer.net After this match, Revs are off until Oct 16th. MON coming off a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Columbus on Saturday.
Should have everyone available, with a break coming up. I thought Arena waiting too long and did minimal subbing in the last game - hopefully he works more people into this one (personally, I'd like to see Caicedo get follow-on minutes - I thought he'd have been a great choice to protect our lead against Orlando).
I agree that Caicedo is someone who I want to see more of. I wonder if there is still some injury management that needs to happen. He may not be able to do quick turn arounds yet and may need more recovery time.
Preview | Revs wrap up hectic stretch Wednesday in Montréal before international break By Jeff Lemieux revolutionsoccer.net
That's a concerning "questionable" list - I wonder if that's just being used as a placeholder for any kind of issue at all. I guess we'll see in a few hours.
The injury report has been that way for the last 2 or 3 games so I'm not putting a lot of weight on it. The only player I have no idea on status is Maciel.
Have to agree with Steve R: From the Preview to the Orlando game on Saturday: "Emmanuel Boateng is once again listed as questionable having missed the last two games through injury, while Bou, Gil, Jon Bell, Edward Kizza and Maciel are listed as questionable, as well." From the Preview to the Chicago game on 9/22: Emmanuel Boateng missed last weekend’s draw with Columbus through injury, once again listed as questionable alongside Gil, Bou, Jon Bell, Edward Kizza, and Maciel. From the Preview of the Columbus game on 9/18: "Officially the Revs list Bou, Gil, Jon Bell, Emmanuel Boateng, Edward Kizza, and Maciel as questionable."
Any thoughts on streams for this game? I don't have cable, and ESPN+ had been showing me games up until about a week ago, and now Revs have been blacked out. Super frustrating.
I’m at the game. Most impressive player tonight? Jones. Montreal won’t run at him and he was heavily involved in the attack and scored a goal.
Jones, Buchanan, Gil, Buksa and Bou are, as a unit, a nightmare for defenders. Speaking of defenders, Andrew Farrell had a monster game. He just blew up play after play. Quito has always been dangerous against the Revs, but Farrell kept him pretty well bottled up.
It's after the fact now for this match, but I've been able to watch games through Hulu, even if they're normally blacked out on ESPN+. It's been a great discovery.
Great game....one brief lapse in defense and we seemed a bit asleep for a long stretch on the second half but then woke up. Its a pleasure to watch this team sometimes. I cant imagine though after we lose Tajon, maybe Turner, maybe Jones.... Only team I enjoyed More was the one with JJ and Lee...2014 I believe. That team was amazing on attack
Talk about a game of two halves. We dominated that first half, but we also got a bit lucky not to be down early as Quito missed just wide in the opening minutes when our defense had one of their normal lapses. After that, most of the half belonged to the Revs. They just couldn't stop our attack, and we could/should have had more than 3. Second half ... sloppy as hell. That was disturbing to watch, unforced giveaways one after the other. If you're truly being honest with yourself, that game should have been 3-2 in the last 15 or so as Montreal was just putting on the pressure. Montreal either missed wide, or we just got a foot in at the last second. That half was really just ... bad. Not the best game from Gil, but well, the expectations from him are high, so it wasn't what we're used to. That giveaway where he kicked it off his right foot out of bounds was a mistake we just don't see from him. Turner was solid, never really called on to make any major saves (that I remember). Jones was fantastic. Buksa was good. Buchanan/Gil/Bou all tried to do too much individually at times. Two complaints (because, hell ... it's me): 1) I HATED the reaction from Bou on the first goal. I'm glad he got back in the game, but I'm also disappointed in Charlie/Brad for just skipping that and not noting it till the 36th minute. And even then, they didn't note that specific moment. I did love that he got his head back in the game, and was rewarded with playing a part in all of the last three goals. 2) Again, Arena took too long to sub. We needed to settle that team down, and I was wondering why he didn't make the subs earlier. That game was a back and forth affair from the beginning and it was obvious there were some tired legs. At the end of the day though, 3 points more gained. We didn't gain or lose any ground on the Shield race (which isn't a bad spot for us). We need 8 points in the next 5 games to break the MLS single season points record. And the magic number to win the East is now down to 2 points. By Sunday evening, the Eastern Conference Regular Season Title could be ours as Nashville plays at NYCFC.
I agree, except Jones is still prone to costly mistakes. He coughed up a ball last night that very well could've been a goal against us.
I agree with everything you said. I saw the same game you did. But I couldn't help but think that Seattle would've punished us for our lapses!
In response to a post on Facebook, I noted the same last night: "But they can’t [play like this defensively] against the better teams we will eventually see in November."
In addition to the points record, we have a 5 point cushion on seattle for the shield, so a 3-1-1 record (7 points) puts us level on points with them assuming they win out.
Yes, but then he did get a little too casual and gave away a few passes needlessly. Huh? I'll have to go back and watch - I don't remember anything unusual about that play. -------- Montreal was all in on the high press, especially early. Every time we broke the press, we were off to the races with a chance for a really high-quality scoring chance. That made it a dangerous game for our defense, but a few times we executed exceptionally well to beat the press. As noted, Gil had a shocking (for him) number of passes intercepted, along with the unforced bad touch to lose the ball. Still, he was dangerous around the area, keeping the ball alive and moving in the attack, so that defenders couldn't focus on our primary scoring threats. Bou really had a master game as a distributor - really a master week, setting up great chances, forcing own goals. Really impressive for a guy whose normal game is as a scorer. It almost seems at times that we have an unfair number of scoring options: Tajon turning defenders inside and out, Gil sending players in on goal, Bou playing in low crosses to torture defenders, Buksa out-jumping and out-muscling central defenders, ... We scored 4 in this one and I genuinely felt like we left a couple of goals on the field. Our defense had to do a lot of 1v1 defending at the 18 (and it cost us once), but this was the definition of a wide-open game. Montreal knew that if we were allowed to advance the ball, they'd have trouble stopping us, so they pushed up so hard to keep us penned in. It worked ... except when it didn't.
It was a bad look from a player. He didn't get the ball on the original pass, and then just chose to walk away. I'm not sure if he thought the ball was out of play from Bye's cross or what, but Gil took his shot, the rebound went to Jones and even after he buried it (Bou did turn and look), he just kept walking back to midfield. At the 20 second mark of this video.
I had the same reaction and to top it off, after his assist to Buksa, he turned to Bye and extended both arm almost like he was referencing the first goal and saying 'See what happens when you give ME the ball!'
Like I said, it's just a bad look from a team that has seemed to be together all year. I'll guarantee that Arena sits down with Bou about this. Just can't react like that in a game.
Yeah, that was pretty bad from Bou. He's definitely looked mentally out of sorts the last few games. Hopefully the goal will help him settle a bit.
