How could you forget the legendary CONCACAF Giant's Cup?

These are all just bs cash grabs with no clear path. Maybe this will work, likely not. We already have the CCC (or whatever) that gets you into the WCC. That's enough.

MLS will benefit from the better competition. We will learn from our mistakes versus the better (on paper) Mexican teams and hopefully use it to do better in the CCL and CWC. This tournament could also help MLS get a bigger TV deal. If it doesn't work out, MLS can just end it like all the other failed start-up competitions before. I think it is worth the gamble.

The gamble is if it makes them money or not. If they can make money they will keep going. If this works and the Mexican teams don't feel like it dilutes their play or negatively impacts their league goals or player health then maybe it will stick.

Even then it will be glorified friendlies in the middle of a season with a made up trophy to win.

Not arguing, but technically all trophies are made up. And because it is ~US v ~Mex it probably won't be that friendly either. But it will be in the middle of the season.

Maybe. If both teams play B-sides, who does it improve? If SKC made the final would Vermes roll out his backups to save the starters for the following week's MLS resumption?

The point of hitting pause on the season is so they don’t have to play their b-teams..

The B-sides still get a game they normally wouldn't in that scenario.

I wouldn't mind a "Europa League" version of Leagues Cup so I could maybe see my local USL club against international opponents.

I can't wait for that enthralling Necaxa/Austin match.

And you can throw out the record books when Tijuana and Cincinnati get together.

Yes all trophies are made up but we've had large competitions like the USOC and the CCL that have a history and track record and something legit for winning. I hope this doesn't dilute the quality of games leading into and out of this thing. I personally don't care and won't watch, but I rarely watch anything due to time anyway - just DC and LAFC at this point.

You can build history and track records. Had SuperLiga not folded it would be older than the rebranded CCL. Maybe Leagues Cup will be a memory in ten years. Maybe it will last, breed some entertaining rivalries, and be continuously growing in stature. I'm willing to give it a chance.

Also, history isn't everything. The Open Cup is a cool thing for enthusiasts and U.S. soccer history buffs, but it's not exactly a competition that feels especially important, imo.

Hope I can flip my season tickets that will definitely get applied to this for a profit.

This thing is ********ing stupid. Terrible concept, terrible timing, terrible format, and just wildly unnecessary overall. I hate every aspect of it.

More dates at stadiums most clubs control = more money on one hand to allow losses on other hand.

However, I think the Leagues Cup will be a clear money-maker. US-based Mexican fans will be enough + just enough MLS fans.

In this case, it help build depth - a perennial MLS concern.
