We're giving James a lot of shit but its really horrendous planning by Everton. You go out of your way to make maybe your biggest signing ever the year before, he performs well but has some injury problems and then you hire one of his arch nemesis as managers and don't have a move sorted for him early on or talk to the player and manager and sort things out? They have had some really poor transfers and decisions over the last few years, overpaying for lots of mediocre talent and without a clear identity, both sides were really dumb in this whole situation and James should have been more decisive early but at least he pulled the trigger at the last chance.

His whole press conference messaging was very clear - he just wants to play and get in playing rhythm.

It worries me a little that he has signed an extension there - that implies he has been guaranteed his salary over multiple seasons and will make it harder for him to return to Europe unless he has huge performance for Colombia.

Wait he signed an extension???? They're never gonna let him go easy leading up to the World Cup, so lets just assume that he's probably gonna be there until the World Cup and that he is gonna get paid a ton, probably off the books or in sponsorships. Lots of money over there, and they're gonna want marketable names to sing their praises to the world.

If James can be healthy enough to play 30 games at the club level anywhere - even if it’s my old Sunday Co-Ed league, I’ll view that as a victory

If injuries and fitness issues are going to follow him to Al Rayan, then…well you know…

This article is a good read, but says nothing new that we already haven’t discussed

Yes, was referenced during the press conference. So I think that is Pipe Sierra's first real hit - he said it was a transfer yesterday rather than a 1 yr loan and took a lot of crap on Twitter.

It's well written - though I don't think he was really on 220k a week. At signing, Everton put him at 90k a week - but more recently there was discussion at 150k a week (which lines up with the public wage alignments both Al Rayyan and the Turkish club agreed with Everton, so I tend to think is right). More likely is that he had a kicker to raise his wage in Y2 of the deal and Everton upon seeing Carlo was out realized they should push James out rather than honor it. It's unlikely that the team initially missleaked James' wages by more than 100%.

Other than that it's right - it's sad that we look at his time at Everton as a failure on football terms - he is probably the most successful Colombian on the pitch translating his game to the league since Tino. He was head and shoulders over his teammates when healthy and looked totally comfortable on the pitch against the top teams. He just couldn't stay fit. That's the problem. His skill and ability were terrific and 15 goals scored or created in 26 games is a solid return.

That he made matters worse with off field nonsense and was short sighted on wage demands with the loan opps that appeared this summer are a sep point.

If he gets fit at All Rayyan, he absolutely still offers a ton of upside to the NT.

James in the headwear is going to be quite an image.

Just give us a healthy and motivated James and Quintero and I think we'll be fine. It's not an ideal situation but if playing in weaker leagues gives them a better shot at staying healthy and able to prioritize that I'll take it.

Anyone have an Athletic sub? As they are behind paywall I tend to find their people do more journalism and less recycling.

I just don't see a team paying that kind of money for him given the wages he is on. This could be prohibitive - unless the Qataris are so rich they let him rip up the contract but I doubt that...

Qataris are all in cahoots with each other. The PSG owner can get James easily if he wants him.
    Will he want him though?

I still have that clothing and headgear when we visited Bahrain while on deployment. So many people legitimately did not recognize me and assume I was a native lol.
