No doubt (at the end of his career) but it won’t be next cycle is my point. If he’s successful at Leipzig top clubs will be sniffing around him. They won’t wait for him to go spend 4 years with the US National team and those offers likely won’t still be on the table. Club world moves at a different speed and US isn’t some prestigious Federation.

lmao .... i'd like to be the house on that bet

We looked okay, at best, against Canada.
We looked whatever the opposite of dangerous is against El Salvador
There is no way we are going into Honduras with a 3 point expectation with how they are playing.
30% loss 60% tie 10% win - those are the odds i'm at right now with them. I will be pleased if we get out of this window with 3 points

I mean Jesse Marsch has said over and over again what a big deal it would be to coach the USMNT in the World Cup at home. The US job clearly means alot to him and based on comments he's made publicly, I'd be surprised if he was offered it for the 2026 cycle if would turn it down. If the US makes a run in the World Cup the offers are going to be there in Europe afterwords. The question isn't what the big clubs want but what does Jesse Marsch want to do. And I don't know what the guy is actually thinking, but I can point you to public comments he's made over and over again every time he's asked.

Big clubs in Europe wouldn’t care if we made it out of the first knockout round. Maybe if we made it to the final 4 teams they’d look in conjunction with what he does with RBL but ultimately they’ll care about club more. If he crushes it at RBL this and next year and has a choice between a top 10 club soccer team and all that entails id wager he’d take that over the US job that will always be on the table for him.

sure, just like we look at the nl and gc wins, and that means we are the best team in concacaf.

we even literally beat the afc champs which means we are the best team is asia.

    yet somehow...

He should, almost all but guaranteed the job, immediately following WC2022 unless of course Berhalter wins the damn cup.

All it takes is 1 loss, and the table looks much more precarious. The US could be 6th or 7th with a realistic set of results (wins for Honduras, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Canada).

    Mexico 9
    Canada 5
    Honduras 5
    Panama 4
    Costa Rica 4
    USA 2
    El Salvador 2
    Jamaica 0

This would be a bad series of outcomes - but not the worst case scenario. IMO, the worst case would be the above results with Panama defeating Mexico.

first of all the us should be cheering mex/canada from here on out. the goal is top three and the more matches those two win the less points everyone else will get.

truth is their fate will be sealed in the next window if its ugly they play panama, cr and jam. that is why unless they get throttled tomorrow night there won't be a change. but if they lose and next window only get 2/3 points there will be a change but even then its not over.

Did you have a point you were trying to make? Marsch is trying to extract as much as he can from the crappy hand he has been dealt. RBL had a massive outflow of talent the past two seasons that hasn't really been replaced - this past transfer window especially... It will be a decent year if they qualify for European competition next year and a great year if they actually get a CL spot.

As to how RBL & Marsch corresponds to Berhalter... it doesn't.

Tactically, Berhalter is inept. He mimics other systems, then second guesses himself and trots out janky lineups because he doesn't trust in those systems because he doesn't fully understand them. The USSF nepotism is galling, particularly when you realize the managers with actual talent that were available at the time.

Exactly what do you expect from the guy? The front office sold three of his best players, two of them to Bayern. They've played one of the best teams in the world in UCL and some of the top teams in the Bundesliga to start the season.

The issue lies with the front office. They need to quit selling players if they want to truly compete.

At the current rate, Berhalter projects to be the best USMNT coach in the history of the program.

Only on BigSoccer or Twitter do you have a 23 page thread on firing him now.

I’m sure there were probably similar threads about benching Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey.

What an insufferable lot of numbskulls we are.

Can I play the opaquely reasoned bold conclusion game too?

At the current rate, Berhalter projects to be the worst coach in USMNT history.

I think the obvious reasoning behind those opinions is that we have by far the best, and most, talent we’ve ever had, but often look terrible with that talent. We win, not because of him, but in spite of him.

Yes, and that opinion is flat ridiculous and should be discounted without a second thought.

His current record is 27-5-6 with a winning percentage of 71%. We all have complaints and he's not above criticism but you look ridiculous when you call for a coach who has this record to be fired. All the complaints are either subjective and the fan's opinion or conspiriacy theories like the European players are revolting, etc.

This is a great example of why fans are not coaches. They seem to think "superior" talent should be able to easily win games which isn't true at all.

Setting aside the question of whether or not Berhalter should be fired [ in my opinion, no. He deserves Qatar..... ], the view that Berhalter is being carried by the quality of our players, not the quality of his management, is not ridiculous, and should not be discounted without a second thought. It is a view that has some weight in evidence, both in terms of the quality of a player coming to Berhalter's rescue [say Pepi, second half game against Honduras] and in terms of clear lack of quality in Gregg's decision making [say, first half game against Honduras]. If it is to be discounted, it should be after a second thought.

I agree with this. It's the immediate dismissal of any questioning or criticism of Berhalter (along with, in the case of one poster, some pretty incendiary personal attacks) that lead to the idea that there is a group who does a fine job of carrying the water for Berhalter. The questions about attack are real and legitimate. For people to just dismiss those without a second thought makes me question exactly what the standards are for Berhalter (and it's not just trophies).

My standards for Berhalter are to A) qualify for the WC; B) build a 23-man roster capable of making it out of its group in Qatar.
A is priority #1. My expectation is that B will happen during the qualifying process as our younger players gain experience playing with each other.

Who's dismissing the concerns about the attack out of hand? You can criticize without saying the coach should be fired, or calling him names, or questioning his intelligence. Or at least you should be able to.

Okay, dismiss it after a second thought if you prefer.

The guy has a relatively stellar record with the youngest national team in the world. Our talent is very good, but it is no better than the standard fare European team and certainly is less experienced than the same type of team.

Most American fans would be upset because they thought we underperformed if we lost to Denmark or Switzerland, despite the fact that both teams have superior talent and superior experience. I think that says more about the fans than it does the coach.
