"NEWS: Earthquakes midfielder Chofis named to MLS Team of the Week" (SJEarthquakes.com - Thursday, 9/16/21) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
They should start "Dumpster Fire of the Week" where our defense can be recognized week in and week out.
It's looked like league had been cracking down any body part to the face, so I was little surprised it was over turned. But, when it comes to referees and SJE, things can be unpredictable.
when was the last time someone not named Chris Wondolowski scored a hat-trick for the Quakes? incredible. nice that after his corner kick goal he went over and gave Matias a hug. hard to rank those goals in terms of awesomeness but probably 3, 2, 1...for me, with his last one being the best. scoring directly off a corner kick is extremely rare, not sure if that's ever happened for the modern era Quakes. Plus their goalie ended up in the back of the net along with the ball for added dramatic effect. goal #2 involved some excellent footwork and a well placed finish...it was a lone effort and involved weaving his way through traffic, keeping his cool and tucking it away. goal #1 was a trademark Chofis strike, creating a little space at the edge of the box and directing a clinical strike right into the top of the net, well past the reach of the outstretched goalie, beautiful. what a night for Chofis!
The applicable section is not "Serious Foul Play" but "Violent Conduct" which states: VIOLENT CONDUCT Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made. In addition, a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible. ** We have in fact seen players sent off for this. I'm guessing it was changed to a yellow because not all conditions were met.
Did Almeyda pull a Ted Lasso and disappear in the middle of the game? I was sitting over the bench area and couldn't see.
he did. it was unclear why but he returned within a minute or two, without his purple sweater. he later put it back on but you know how these things go. then the wheels fell off.
At some point in the second half, Almeyda's purple "sweater" went from Stage I to Stage II on him. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
There must be some technique whereby you can put on the sweater that’s around your neck without it ever leaving your body. We’ll need that, especially as we head into fall.
You are incorrect - VC only happens away from the ball. In this case, Kreilach and Beaton were challenging for a ball that was at Kreilach’s feet.
Nothing. That only comes into play, as Tyf noted, when not challenging for the ball (I.e. away from the ball.). However, a ref should consider this when determining if an infraction fits into the careless (foul) category or rises to misconduct - reckless (caution), or excessive force (send off) criteria.
I was talking about where the "attacking the head" rules appeared in the laws, not how they applied to this particular case. We've had a few players smacked across the face this season without even a caution given. I don't like any rule that uses the word "deliberate" or tries to intuit intent. A jury might consider that interpretation for hours; the referee has a fraction of a second to decide. I'd rather see a word like "avoidable." "He didn't mean to hurt the opponent" is the wrong metric.
Walls and Fuentes are on loan to the Austin Bold. Casey is 18, Fuentes 19. The fact that they haven't featured for the Quakes yet/much isn't that alarming to me at this point. Jacob is also only 19. He has made the bench for the Quakes this season, but, seriously, under what circumstances could/should have he played? It's not like we blow teams away (or are getting blown out) where he can get some late game minutes. And I don't rate him as better than the players playing ahead of him. And not really much in the way of friendlies, but, I expect he will get minutes against Cruz Azul.
At this point we should be taking small risks and playing some of the kids more to see what we have. 1) It's not clear that we'd be any worse for doing so, and 2) Our playoff chances are at nearly single digit percentage, and 3) it'll help us figure out who we should be keeping on our roster.
I'm not alarmed but puzzled. There are several teams that have played younger players more minutes then these guys have played. The past two seasons the MLS schedule has been compressed (the Quakes are about to play their third game in seven days). Between these three guys the Quakes have paid 11 seasons worth of salaries for 78 minutes.
It sounds like we are building a great academy, but that the connections (connexions, for my British friends) between the academy and the first team are perhaps tenuous at best, based on many years of reading the Academy thread and talking to a guy or two.
