I don't know what the current LOTG say about it specifically, but the problem I have with the Abubakar foul is that he launched himself into a flying leap from a sprint and went flying into what was more or less Jebo's vertical space. I think Jebo may have taken a few steps backward, but Abubakar went into it from a sprint. The physics of it are such that you're moving much faster in a sprint than you are in a vertical jump - like 5 or 6x faster. So the force involved is much, much greater than it would be if they were more or less jumping from a standing position or a few steps here and there. If MLS is serious about limiting career and life endangering concussions they need to make this type of play a straight red. You should not be able to launch yourself from a sprint into a header, unless you know that it is uncontested. Abubakar had full view of what was happening in front of him. He knew it was contested with Jebo. This one really pisses me off.
Chofis leads the team in goal-scoring, and he had the game winner in the most recent Clasico, as I recall.
How about advancing in the playoffs? The only time it's been done in the post-Golden Age was in... 2010. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
I’m not sure how I feel about this particular play from having watched it live and in the videos. They appear inconclusive to my untrained eye. But the infraction you describe is a targeting foul and straight ejection in college football for the reasons you mention. MLS should have a similar straight red policy.
I need to re-watch it by my impression was that Abubakar was running up into it in more or less of a sprint and Jebo was taking a few steps into it but did not launch himself from a sprint.
If you want to give two playoff games more weight than 30 regular season games, that is your choice, but to me, finishing sixth of eight teams is a massive failure - one with which Quakes fans have become all to familiar. That level of failure, year after year, would not be tolerated by most owners or fanbases. The fact that it stands out as an exemplary year for the Earthquakes shows just how debased this team, its owners, and its fans have become. Here is an unretouched photo of a Quakes season ticket fan:
Marie had a bad game. Alanis had a worse game. Yueill hard a worser game. Time to bench Yueill I think. His form since last year needs some internal evaluation between JY and qualified head Dr. While I think MA took Judson out because he was a walking red card at that point, I still think it was the wrong decision. I believe he shut down 5 or 6 clear 1v1s in the goal area due to 1) how far back our defensive line is and 2) the defensive line's inability to react (or read) slightly delayed runs into the box. Once he was out it was a field day for RSL. I don't get MA's insistence to play Abecasis. He really doesn't add much and TT is so much more effective. Not starting our only DP seems like a pretty big problem, no? How does Fierro start over Espinoza? Maybe it was just MA resting players, but I wonder (Espinoza has been bad, but not as bad as Fierro). I'd start Cade in Forward over Wondo at this point. At least you might luck into 1v1 and it will certainly give our midfield some more vertical space.
I thought we were primed to make a run this year. Two things happened in July / August that clearly made us a better team: we acquired Nathan and we acquired Jebo. Unfortunately Jebo got whacked and Nathan's had enough of an issue with cards that he's been missing for key games. And now on top of that Salinas, who really has been one of our best attacking players this year, somehow, at 36, has an "undisclosed illness".
so many cheap turnovers, passing was poor. Chofis has been getting better all season, leads the team in goals, and as @Earthshaker said, each of his three goals last night were quality strikes. I can't even remember the last time Quakes had a hat-trick, anyone know? Chofis has been the Quakes best player this year.
Wondo's had some I think - maybe 2012? I like Chofis, but as a forward, as he played last night, not as a midfielder. We have to keep him in that wide forward role that he played last night and against LA in that win.
have to disagree on TT, Abecasis is better back there. but then I've never seen TT as an MLS-level player. Fierro was terrible, possibly the worst I've seen him play. Not starting our DP was a mistake.
Anyone know why Matias left the field? He returned minutes later, without the purple sweater! Yes, he put it back on but I'm pretty sure that disruption could've been our undoing - that and subbing on Rios, of course (and subbing out Judson and Chofis as mentioned)... ...terribly disappointing.
I'm going to disagree on this one. He swung that hand back hard, knowing he would catch someone. Then, when he felt Beason, he gave another shove. I've been playing long enough to know that was intentional. Ref was right there and pulled out his red card. I don't agree that the ref made a clear and obvious error. Also, the "foul" that resulted in one of RSL's goals wasn't. Happened right in front of us. Dude wasn't even touched. Danielle even commented that could be a yellow for embellishment.
so you have to go back nine years for the last time any Quakes player scored a hat-trick, maybe longer, who really knows? I feel bad for Chofis this morning. That should've easily been enough for the win, at home.
it was so weird to hear them discussing the head injuries in this game and not one single word about Jebo. They must've had strict marching orders "not one word about Jeremy!" their silence makes me think its serious and at best he won't be returning this season, hope I'm wrong. .
He's been the Quakes best offensive player for sure, but I think our best overall player, since he got here, has been Nathan. He is not only lights out on defense, but he's also about our 3rd most productive goal scorer(!), with 2 goals in 11 games.
