Chicharito our MOTM, Quintero overall? I think thats mostly because he was going up against an exhausted Julian.

I blame Vanney. He has to realize a midfield of Vasquez, JDs and Efra is a joke. Absolutely no heart. We are in the final stretch at home, you can’t take anything fir granted. First time all year I question Vanney as a coach. We look slow and unorganized. I thought we had 3 weeks and he was going to fix this?!

    Chich cares

ok, so I'm definitely sold on the 4-4-2. I think Dejan and Chich can work together when on the pitch at the same time, gotta get in sync for who is doing what run, but Dejan assisted with Chich's goal if I remember correctly. The only thing it requires is better CM, and JDS is not it.

Goalie (whoever Vanney trusts this week)
    Araujo -- Depuy --- Steres ---- Jorge

    Grandsir --- Rayan ---- Seba ---- Cabral

    Chich ------ Dejan

I had a little different take than you guys...though the conclusion the same:

    1. I thought JDS's last two games were better, and he started our goal with a pick and pass. Still not DP level, but I didn't think he was terrible here.
    2. On the other hand, Julian looks gassed, and needs a rest. The cross that he woofed into row Z and not into the box at the end of the game was testament to this.
    3. Raveloson looked lazy, and was a culprit in the first goal.
    4. Sega needs to reclaim his original form. Agree with folks on the overdribbling and interesting on the weight room comment. Could be!
    5. Grandsir was the lone energetic presence. At one point I was aghast at him powering up the pitch...to realize his lumbering team was still 2/3 of the way behind him. Yikes.
    6. What was up with the two amazing squared crosses into the box that found NO ONE in the first half.
    7. Lletget/Kjlestan good upon being subbed in. Heck, at least Cabral was active.
    8. Efrain was terrible and deservedly yanked at half-time.

Man, I don't like that we're fading in the home stretch.

Vanney needs to pick the best starting 11 and stick with it. If you have to rotate, take out 8 guys for the middle game and change tactics. This is unacceptable for the talent we have. I'm tired of watching us lose at home.

Lletget really showed what he brings to the game when he was subbed on. He didn't do anything flashy, but he was that link between our defense and offense the moment he came on. I didn't even realize that is what we were missing till Seba starting just holding the ball in midfield a bit more and looking for spaces to run/pass into.

I also think we the fans cut Raveloson too much slack. He has scored some great goals for us, but as DM, he hasn't been that great. He likes to wander which leaves our defense open to attacks.

That starting line up was very questionable. Efra and Vasquez don't move enough. Vasquez it's understandable and he gets going eventually when the opportunity is there. Efra just doesn't seem to know where to be but worse then that yesterday was how terrible his passing was. That's a real asset of his but he was atrocious.

I don't get the Sega hate on yesterday's performance. I blame Rayan and Steres for the goal more then Sega. Other than that, I thought Sega was pretty good? It does always seem to be a knife's edge between good and catastrophe though for our centerbacks.

Nico is not a good passer and he's prone to getting caught upfield for no good reason. Easy to pass behind him. It's fine if he's made a big attacking run but often it happens cause he's caught in between in the midfield.

Rayan is a big disappointment as the defensive midfielder we hoped we were getting and really need. He's a fine midfielder though. Maybe play Saldena more and Rayan ahead of him.

JDS is done in my opinion. Wasn't bad but was mostly not good.

Araujo looks exhausted. Maybe rest him and put Sega out wide right for a match.

Chich was fine. A sharper Chich would have had 3 goals so that is a nice thought. Even in a game we sucked, he got chances.

Dejan and Chich together has potential.

Lleget/Cabral/Sacha all added good performances which is what you hope from your subs. That was stone cold PK that wasn't called on Cabral was it not? The lesson there is to make a bigger meal of it and hold the god damn throw in until the replay is looked at a few times.

Steres - typical performance. Mostly good. One catastrophe that ends up in the net.

Grandsir at least always brings the energy.

The lethargy. The standing around and passing the ball pinball style. The bad passes and ball strippings. My takeaway is the collective. We can't get motivated for a match at home as a group. We can point out this guy or that guy as having a better or worse game but its the team. We are not a machine yet. We are a collection of parts still in assembly.

Maybe it will take letting go a few guys and two or three more new players and another full season for everybody to be on the same page.

Yep. We need a new one that is not as brutal as a Dema Kovalenko/Nigel De Jong. More a Chris Birchall type that can be clean yet tough. Because Raveloson and Llegett are both 8's, with Llegett also capable of playing as a 7 and 11 when needed. I think we will be playing Saldana more in that spot in the future. He is young as small though which is why I get why he is purely an off the bench option at the moment though.

    Highlight Time Folks

Well my thoughts from this game are simple. We should have started the best squad and we didn't. By the time we got the best people in the game, they got us the point to stop the defeat but we ran out of time to secure the win. I blame Vanney for this. I get we are trying to work some people back to 90 minute form but still. I wrote at the beginning of this game that we should go with a 4-4-2 with a similar line up that only differed in that Sasha in for Vasquez and I wouldn't have burned out Grandsir which warranted the Cabral sub.
    My suggested lineup to start
    ------DeJan--Chicha
    Llegett--Vasquez--Grandsir
    --------Raveloson-

Vanney's actual lineup at the end

    ------DeJan--Chicha
    Llegett--Sasha--Cabral
    --------Raveloson---

We should have had DeJan and Chicha in at the beginning and seriously I don't understand why Jonathan Dos Santos has not been relegated to super sub at this point. Put him in against tired legs to get the max impact out of him. I also agree with mbar that Aruajo is gassed. If anyone should be getting rested its him.

I want to see one of the following attacks at minute 1

    First Choice Option:
    -----------DeJan---Chicha
    Cabral--Llegett--Raveloson---Grandsir

    or

    Second Choice Option:
    -----------DeJan---Chicha
    Cabral--Llegett--Vasquez---Grandsir

    or

    Third Choice Option:
    -----------DeJan---Chicha
    Cabral--Llegett--Sasha---Grandsir

    or

    Fourth Choice Option:
    -----------DeJan---Chicha
    Llegett--Vasquez--Raveloson---Grandsir

    or

    Fifth Choice Option:
    -----------DeJan---Chicha
    Llegett--Sasha--Raveloson---Grandsir

Perry Kitchen was supposed to be our starting 6 for the next 5 years.

It's worrying to accumulate the good box-to-box midfielders (Lletget, Jona, Corona... Maybe Raveloson too though it's a little bit early to me), but we've been unable to get a true 6 or a true 10 for the last five years.

Yeah, this is an interesting one.

I guess you can be of two minds of this: one is that Vanney isn't nailing the rotations, which was definitely a critique I had in the stretch leading up to the intl break. The other is that...these stretches of games has really exposed a midfield that is very much a work-in-progress to put it nicely. It's not as deep as we would like and Jonathan's decline is only exacerbating that. I mean, we got outplayed in midfield at home against Houston.

    Here is the goal:
    https://www.mlssoccer.com/video/goa...ch-mls-in-15-from-sj-vs-rsl-september-15-2021

First Klinnsy kicks the ball right down middle to a well covered Vazquez. Bad idea. Then Ravelson puts his leg out to intercept ball and whiffs. This allows Houston player to get a step on him but Ravelson could still easily catch him but instead immediately gives up. Meanwhile HOU has two offside players running to get back on side. Steres signals to Sega that there is a guy behind him he should pick up.

(Thumbnails below show positioning at start of play. The ones I tried to showing later in play were all “too large”. Oh well, just freeze video right before pass is made if interested.)
    4F430BB9-DF65-4610-BE50-BD41E87524CB.jpeg 4F430BB9-DF65-4610-BE50-BD41E87524CB.jpeg 4F430BB9-DF65-4610-BE50-BD41E87524CB.jpeg

HOU player runs up and stands just to the right of Sega. Both Sega and Steres make mistakes here. Sega needs to either make physical contact with him (arm loosely around the guy’s waist, like you see good cbs do all overthe world) or by taking a step back so he is goalside of the player. Worst possible thing he can do is what he did - stand flatfooted and give him a wide open path to a through ball between Steres and Sega.

Steres made a mistake also by hanging a foot or so behind Sega. They need to move as a unit. Steres hanging back created a sweet open on-side area that allowed Sega’s man to start his run slightly before the pass w/o being offside.

We were doomed by our positioning and Sega’s passivity. Heres the set up:

    ——————————BOND
    —————————————————
    —————————————————
    —————————————————
    —————————————————
    ————————————————Steres——X
    —————————————————
    —-———X—Seg————————————
    —————————————————
    —————————————————
    ——————————Xb———————

From this position- if a good pass is made the only one who can save us is Klinnsman. And while I don’t expect him to save this I do think he was a little late to respond and looked awkward on his save attempt. Klinnsmans free kick was a bigger mistake - no attempt to shape it so we might win it or keep it from coming right back down our throats. But goal mostly on Ravelson laziness, Sega doing absolutely nothing and Steres positioning making it easy for scorer to start his run early and still be onsides. (Steres had no chance of stopping scorer after pass was made. The pass caught the runner in perfect stride running toward goal. The angles meant that Steres would have to chase from behind.

Good breakdown. I agree, Raveloson's challenge is pretty lame and I put the lion's share of blame with him, but we also played right into their hands, tactically. Once Vasquez lost the ball, we already in trouble, as everyone is now in transition and trying to hustle into defensive posture. For Raveloson, for example, he's probably expecting an outlet pass from Vasquez, which is why he's in a bad position to cover for him when he loses possession.

Really, Colorado wrote the blueprint for how to beat us with the counter and it's to savage Vasquez, win the ball in our own half and beat us in transition. Like, everyone knew how they were going to beat us and we sorta walked right into it. I mean, they had far too many chances and only happened to score from this one (for example one big chance where Araujo was ball-watching)

While agree with much of your post, Vazquez didn’t lose the ball - he never had much of a chance to get that ball. Its a long high kick in the direction of his head when he has a much bigger stronger player draped all over him. Vasquez isn’t going to win a lot of physical battles, especially when he’s being held in a bearhug with his back to goal.

Here’s Vazquez trying to receive Klinnsy’s free kick.

    Great analysis everyone.

My crackerjack analysis is that for the first 55 minutes of this game, Houston wanted this game more than we did.
