Pretty interesting article questioning the MLS draft's impact on young players: https://www.forbes.com/sites/ianqui...t-against-the-mls-superdraft/?sh=6cf761445de4

My reaction to that article is to think that Forbes needs to hire a verb editor, to make sure each and every sentence has a verb.
What about their idea of teams having a pool of money for signing young players, instead of draft rights? I thought that was an interesting idea. Drafts are good for leagues, because it knee-caps players' options, particularly those not good enough/having international ties to have overseas options, but do nothing for the players (other than the ego/publicity boost that someone wants them). Someday, probably after the NCAA exploitation business is blown-up, these player drafts will come under more scrutiny. I'm guessing that it's only explicit anti-trust exemptions and union contracts that allow leagues to cooperate to limit player choice.
I'm agnostic on alternatives to the draft, but I do think that college American soccer, peculiar to this country though it may be, has a continued role to play in the world soccer market. It surfaces those guys who are late bloomers, or who maybe washed out of a European academy but who are able to demonstrate that they can in fact play. But the issue of how to allocate those players is not just an MLS issue. The lower tiers of American soccer are stocked almost exclusively with ex-college players. I don't know what the answer is, and with the world soccer market in such a state of ferment, it's hard to imagine what a durable mechanism for player acquisition might even look like.
With Supporters' Shields, MLS Cups, and World Cup qualification points to chase, I really hope my heart is healthy enough to handle the road ahead... Watching Austin versus Vancouver, interesting to see that Austin has Fagundez lining up as a holding midfielder, alongside Alexander Ring. I never would have thought that would be a good role for him, but he was excellent.
Why does the announcer of this USMNT game keep slipping in the phrase "O'Shea Nation"? It's reminding me of Super Troopers when they play the "Meow" game.
Our USNT defenders, much like the Revs, are not very good at getting the ball past initial pressure and as a result, waste way too much time passing the ball back and forth between themselves and the keeper. It just requires a little bit of creativity and more confidence to make that pass to the midfield, to bypass pressuring forwards who are tasked with closing off large gaps. They all seem to be trained to take two touches on every ball - and even unpressured passes are not clean, precise, quick and accurate enough. A lot of little delays add up to facing a fully set up defense over and over again. Quick, creative, unexpected passes are what challenge a defense, not the methodical back and forth probing.

Brian replies to a discussion about a long running shortage of Revs apparel - jersey, hats etc. Correct. On “finished” items such as jerseys orders are placed ~9 months in advance. Printed items such as t-shirts can be replenished.— Brian Bilello (@RevsPrez) September 9, 2021
I watched some of the ATL-ORL game on TV, and was left with the feeling that neither team was that impressive. ORL's defending in particular was atrocious. I have no particular hostility for either of those teams, but if that's what they're bringing, then I can't wait for the play-offs. It's such a warm, fuzzy feeling to have come this far.
I've never been able to say this on BigSoccer about the Revs in my entire life up until this point, so here it goes: I am so happy where this team is going, from outright talent, depth, the training facility, the USL squad, having Bruce and Shalrie in the organization. I have full confidence that Bruce has the full attention of his players, and that our squad is motivated and capable of winning MLS Cup this year. I actually BELIEVE it when theres rumblings of new stadium talks again. I am entirely and thoroughly impressed. Pass the Kool Aid.
I wish I were as positive. When it comes to stuff under Arena's control, I agree, I have %100 confidence that they have an exceptional organization which is building directly to a championship team. When it comes to other stuff, particularly under Bilello's domain, I have no confidence at all. I think the quality of our broadcast team is a perfect example of their acceptance of mediocrity and lack of vision. And, another, is the absolute nightmarish crush to enter the gates for live matches - and this while 'social distancing' should still be high priority.
This was my first time entering within 15 minutes of game time. The lines to get through security were much longer than I am used to but it went pretty quickly. Saw many women getting turned away because their clutch or purse was too big. I was sitting on my couch when the 30 minute alert went off on my phone. I had forgotten the game was at 7:00. I live near the stadium (5 miles) and was able to get to the stadium, through more traffic than I am used to to, through longer security lines than I am used to and to my seat only missing 2 minutes. That included a stop at a concession stand for food.
