Didn’t know there were so many Salvadorans in Toronto. Osorio said it felt like an away match for Canada. Sure didn’t look like that on TV.
This is absolutely Canada's best chance to get in the cup in quite awhile. They look like they got belief about them.
They certainly have the talent. They have a bunch of very good Europe based players with some MLS depth.
Canada dominated last night against El Salvador and now our next match is against Mexico on October 7th away in Mexico. That match I definitely cannot wait for.
One couple I spoke with drove from Windsor. Another couple of guys came down from Montreal. Not all were from the GTA.
Mexico, Canada, US at the top of the table. I know Panama is there too. I predicted Mexico, Canada and the US would be top 3 and I still believe that will be how it ends up. We dropped points against Honduras, but had 66% possession. The US game however we sat some of our best players and played a defensive counter attacking game and ground out a draw. I think we can go to Honduras and play a smart professional game and get the draw. There's talk of the November window being played in Edmonton. Apparently Canada is also willing to play concacaf gamesmanship with the away sides. How do you think Mexico and Costa Rica will feel about playing soccer in minus 10 degree weather in Edmonton! I can't wait for the next window! Good luck to the US as well.
I personally love to see that. Make it cold and miserable for them, that is some excellent CONCACAFery
I think we play good soccer at home. I think playing in -10 negates our ability to play a good game in those conditions. How do you even head a ball when it’s -10? How many of our players even play in -10? Good idea in theory, not in practice. The only team I’d like to play against in Edmonton would be the USA as they will flood Vancouver when we play them there. Not too many Americans will fly/drive to Edmonton. Obviously, that’s in a different window, weather wise.
Awhile back didnt Canada play Mexico in Edmonton and bring them completely to keel? I’m talking their SVE days (their klinsmann)
Based on what I've seen in this window Canada are a better team than Mexico, cold weather or no cold weather.
The one time that Canada qualified for the World Cup previously, it played the deciding game against Honduras in Newfoundland. Canada, despite its reputation for fair play, is no stranger to gamesmanship.
Canada's road to Qatar 2022 Canada defeats El Salvador 3-0 in Toronto Depth No Alphonso Davies and Cyle Larin - no problem Scott Arfield wasn't even with the team this window Lucas Cavallini - Not long ago he was our #1 striker Samuel Piette is excellent at shutting down the midfield What is Liam Fraser doing on the team? 0 minutes Attack Tajon Buchanan : 1 one goal but at the end of a lot of punishment, VAR? Jonathan David - 1 goal & 1 assist + excellent defensively and with his pressing What he lacks in speed, Junior Hoilett playmaking has been key Midfield Atiba Hutchinson played all games, 1 goal and commanded the midfield. Ridiculously good at manoeuvring in tight space and keeping possession Stephen Eustaquio is THE complete midfielder : reads the game like a 6, technical skills as an 8 and can create like a 10 Jonathan Osorio is kind of a let down - David Wotherspoon is a superior midfielder for me and he should play way more minutes Good window for Mark-Anthony Kaye Fullbacks Ritchie Laryea and Sam Adekugbe - excellent as fullbacks providing tactical flexibility, versatility while freeing Buchanan and Davies to play further up Defense Canada CAN defend - Alistair Johnstone is the best RB/RCB I've seen in this country - it isn't close, he's not staying in MLS for long Steven Vitoria is excellent in the right role Kamal Miller had a good complete game he his challenging Scott Kennedy for the role next to Vitoria. Doneil Henry is good to have to manage minutes and deal with injuries / suspensions. Derek Cornelius could be challenging Doneil Henry spot if he plays well in Greece. Next window @ Mexico - October 7 @ jamaica - October 10 vs Panama in Toronto - October 13 As of today - Canada is #4 in CONCACAF As of today - Canada is #51 in the world. Being in the top 50 will facilitate access to English clubs for Canadians. Canadian Premier League The top 2 teams faced off and Pacific defeated Cavalry. So, Canada's all-time World Cup Finals record is 1 appearance, 3 losses, and 0 goals. That is pretty bad. At least they qualified once.
Their opening game in that World Cup, they gave France a very good game, losing by 1-0 on a goal in the 79th minute. France, which had one of the all-time great midfields in Platini, Tigana and Giresse, had won the European title two years before and reached the semifinals of that World Cup. However, given your avatar, I suspect that you already know all that.
Yes, I have seen all World Cup Finals games since the 1960's, including the France-Canada game. But don't rewrite history. Canada played 11 guys behind the ball from minute 1 through 90. And France had something like a 30-0 shot advantage. Canada lost their other 2 games 2-0 defending to just keep the score down, it seemed. Not something to take too much pride in if you are Canadian. The U.S. played much better against Italy in Italy in 1990, losing 1-0.
Not that it's relevant to today but Canada missed the 1982 World Cup by 1 point in the round. They advanced to the final 6 in the previous and following cycles while the US did not for 3 cycles in a row until 1989. Canada had a good program from the mid 70s to mid 90s until their decline. It's not uncommon to see traditionally good nations to go through these cycles...my thoughts goes to Chile. Canada seems to be back this time around.
True and it’s not like Canada has time for cold weather training, most are coming right from their clubs. But trust me, it’s far worse for a Central American or Mexican side to play in cold than Canada, and it’s a distinct advantage
It looks like we will very likely be playing Costa Rica and Mexico in Edmonton in mid November. Last November 12, there was a high of -1 and a low of -15. It will be cold, especially at night.
Also have to keep in mind that the world Cup was only 16 teams in the 70's and 24 teams during the 80's and 90's (France 98 saw expansion to 32). Qualification was significantly harder back then.
