Excellent news. Really looking forward to this...dare I say more than WCQ? Ok not that much, but point still stands.
It will be interesting to see which team JoGo will choose (if he are not injured or for another reason). I think that could define which national team will represent at the senior level (or not). Apparently he is injured and could be one of the reasons why he did not attend the last Mexican U20 camp. Tony Leone will be another player who will have to choose between Mexico or the United States.
Is this for the U20s that would've been eligible for this cycle or the '03s, that are eligible for the next?
This is for the '03s-'05s, yes. And it shouldn't be their first camp; they are expected to have a gathering about a month prior to this one. An incomplete list of Mex-Americans who you figure have a somewhat decent chance to be on one roster or the other: Jonathan Gomez Mauricio Cuevas Brian Gutierrez Alejandro Alvarado Diego Luna Antonio Leone Christian Torres (probably Mexico) Jonathan Perez (Mexico) Of course there are others like Christopher Garcia and Victor Valdez who probably won't be on either, but might have an outside shot.
I would call in a 30 man camp. We need to get more players into the mix because we've not had any YNT camps recently. We can make some cuts for the games. I'm not going include Pepi because he'll likely be with the senior NT. Gomez might need a senior team call in if we want to retain him in our program, but I'll list him here for now. I'm also not including any college players because the NCAA doesn't observe the international calendar. GK: Jeff Dewsnup, Chris Brady, Gabe Slonina, Emmanuel Ochoa DF: Mauricio Cuevas, Justin Che, Alex Freeman, Michael Halliday, Jonathan Gomez, Anton Sorenson, Tristan Viviani, Nati Clarke, Jalen Neal, Casey Walls, Antonio Leone MF: Danny Leyva, Tarun Karumanchi, Brandan Craig, Jack McGlynn, Alex Alvarado, Zach Booth, Reed Baker-Whiting, Moses Nyeman, Caden Clark, Quinn Sullivan FW: Cade Cowell, Malick Sanogo, Fede Oliva, Dantouma Toure, Kevin Paredes Best XI Dewsnup Freeman-Neal-Walls-Gomez Craig Nyeman-Sullivan Paredes-Sanogo-Clark
Decision Day in MLS is November 7th. Playoffs start two weeks later. Which means you might get someone like Clark, Che or Cowell if their team is eliminated early, but they'd have to be eliminated quick. Philly and DC are in the 7 and 8 spot in the East right now, right on the playoff line. None of their guys are starters, but I'd be shocked to see someone like Sullivan released. I'm not as high on Che as many, but I'm pretty surprised to see Alex Freeman in your Best XI over Che?
I’m not as high on Che as most either. More of a utility player with this age group IMO. His versatility to play RB and CB helps. I left off more talented players. He’ll start and be talked about as a star, so don’t regard my opinion as anything other than my opinion. IMO, he’s more of a player who shouldn’t have a spot on the team once numbers need to be cut down, but that won’t be what happens.
Obviously what's been done before doesn't necessarily tell us what will happen in the future, but in some recent non-Covid cycles there have been one or two smallish camps in the fall -- occasionally including a foreign trip -- at the start of a U20 cycle, and then a bigger one the following January.
Has USSF even announced this tournament? Their web site is ridiculous. With a roster from 2019 and articles about Hudson. It is so sad what Stewart has done to the YNT program. What a disaster.
I'd bet 90% of the YNT problems are money related because of the WNT lawsuit and covid. I don't think Earnie has been a net positive but I also think in a lot of ways he's been hamstrung by circumstances far beyond his control. Now the question is will he improve things from here?
It started before Covid. They told all the coaches to leave and then never hired anyone. Covid was just an excuse to continue to spend zero dollars on it. The lawsuit was the excuse to off load the DAs. So, I don't buy the idea that Stewart has been a victim. It was a choice. There is money there if they wanted to use it. An example: They had two domestic camps, in back to back months, for the USMNT so Gregg could spend weeks with players that are not even factors while the U23 team was doing zero work with their coach leading up to qualifying. They could have easily not done one of the camps (why they needed two I still have no idea) with the senior team and actually prepared the U23 team.
I'm not going to defend Ernie. Greg's hiring process shows there's no reason to defend him. That said as long as a full slate of YNTs starts back up this cycle and good hires are made for U-17 and especially U-20 I'll give a mulligan for the mess this last year and half. If that doesn't improve then yeah, Stewart and company need to go. We've taken a huge step forward as far as developing kids but there's still a ton of room for improvement and we need to see the Fed doing everything it can to grow the game here.
Earnie Stewart and Brian McBride will ultimately be judged on the USMNT, and not the USYNTs. And right now the USMNT has won more trophies in the past two years than games they've lost. I know people on the youth boards won't like hearing that, but its reality. Hire the right guys to run the U17s and U20s, and everything will be back on track. I actually think that one thing the USMNT and USSF staffs have done really well over the past two years is integrate the USMNT and USYNTs. There have been a ton of USYNT-eligible players invited to camps and matches since the COVID restart. So much so that the USMNT is VERY young. For Pete's sake, Berhalter just started an 18 year old target forward in a World Cup qualifier. I'm quite interested to see what the roster for this U20 event looks like. Its hard to know how close the roster listed above will be, because its hard to know which players will be released from Europe. And of course the MLS playoffs will be in full swing. So a bunch of our top players may not be there. And I'm fine with that. At this point in the cycle we should be in "casting a wide net" mode anyway. So dip a little further down in the pool to look at some guys. We're not going to have some of Caden Clark, Ricardo Pepi, Jonathan Gomez, Justin Che, etc. when the U20 games matter anyway. If we can get them for this camp, great. If not, look at the next group.
I mean not that they’ve done everything perfectly but you can’t say COVID didn’t play a role. We would have had a full U20 cycle for instance if not for COVID. There were U23 camps pre-COVID as well. Part of the rationale for the December and January camps were the U23s. Kreis was at both and they called all those players in to help prep for qualifying. The January camp press release even divides the call ups into groups based on who was U23 eligible or not. I think hard choices had to be made because of COVID and while COVID isn’t gone, I don’t think it’s halting any competitions any more, so we’ll have plenty to judge going forward in terms of the youth national teams.
Yup. The new cycles always start in the fall. So essentially the USSF just canceled everything for the 2021 cycles, and are starting the 2023 cycles on a normal schedule. They didn't start early and proactively as some wanted. I get it. And of course if people want to criticize what happened with the U23s they can do so freely. Earnie Stewart recently commented on that, I don't think his response has gone down well. A lot of excuse making, but a lot of those excuses have some merit.
Well ... two of five U20 cycles under Ramos started in January of the year after the finals. But let's hope U.S. Soccer doesn't remember it can do that, or people here might just lose their minds.

We're likely the worst of the teams tbh. Will only have releases from clubs not in the playoff race, less important players, reservists in Europe, etc. Roster should be out in the next week or so. Tough to know who to list, w/out being aware of availabilities, but Slonina, Che, Cowell, Azcona, Leyva, Gutierrez, Sealy, Sullivan; should be among the names there. And I'd take a flyer on Otasowie, cuz we need a cb, & this could be a chance for him to get his s**t together.
Those (little) brothers would be 17-18 and under now, not u-20. I thought the point of this was to replace the u-20 WC lost due to the pandemic. If it's for this cycle, it would just be an extra tourney.
Sounds like Malick Sanogo has accepted a call-up for the tournament: Via Instagram: Malik Sanogo accepted a US u20. Gonna be a big player 👀 🇺🇸 (@ChuckMe92Soccer saw it first) pic.twitter.com/3RuorLUGYH— USMNT Updates (@USMNT_U) October 25, 2021
Too bad. I'd love to hear Otasowie reaction to the offer of jumping on a plane and flying across the world, just for the chance to play CB in the youth tournament.
