It honestly rings a bit hollow to me.

If he loved it at United and all that, why did he wait until he was 36 to come back?

there's no room for sentiment in football manager i guess...

not trying to top red you but were you following united when he came up? It's clear he always appreciated the love fans showed him when he returned as an opposition player to OT.

he has been at the top of world football since he left, could hardly have thrown away the chance to dominate serie A to join the mess we were the last 6 years.

    ^ pretty much.

his choice of club is very curated for the purpose of his legacy. maybe Real Madrid aside as 'the dream'.

i can't be mad at him for that. if we as fans didn't like or couldn't stand it why would a super elite player want to join?

I've only been a United supporter since 2013ish. That's when I got into MLS here and my brother started following United after reading a few books on their history and SAF. So I adopted them since he started - though he started following in the late 2000s.

So no, I've never seen Ronaldo play for the Reds or any of the legends, unfortunately.

nothing wrong with that, although unfortunate timing on your part! i do think it's hard to have witnessed his journey and be cynical about his feelings for the club.

i mentioned the european championship video when SAF congratulated nani and cr7 in an earlier post, that was what 8 years after we sold him to real? the respect and affection between the two - i just can't see it as hollow.

SAF gave him the platform to become cr7. No mistake it was all on him to put in the work, but when he did make it to the top and wanted to go to real - SAF asked for one more season... he agreed and it was a magical one.

There was also the world cup incident in 06, following that he was relentlessly booed away, but the club and united supporters were incredibly supportive. The unconditional love he's felt from OT and SAF hasn't been replicated anywhere and this is the perfect time to return.

I found love for the sport during the 06 world cup which is why I'm a Roma (totti) and United (Ronaldo) fan. Watching CR7 grow from that time until he left and what he's become since is an incredible ride and its no wonder fans are this excited. I have always hoped he would somehow find his way back to the team. Glad that time is now.

We're not like RM fans who booed him even after all he had done for him. Whenever he came back to OT playing for RM he was universally cheered.

I guess I just won't get it since I didn't see him when he was here originally.

All I can think of is what could have been if he'd stayed instead of going to RM.

United could have been the best in the world if he'd stayed, let alone the people they might have gotten to come because of how successful he helped make them.

I just don't buy the, "I loved it when I was here and we were the best in the world, but decided to go to somewhere 'better' ".

If he really loved it, the he would have never left. It's not like United were Brighton-level when he left.

Yeah, you get it. I feel bad for him not being a ManUtd fan during that period... What a time!

Assumptions are that he would play his first game for United against New Castle, correct?

You're confusing the love a player has for a club with the love a fan has for a club. One is unconditional, the other is a professional career. We knew for years that Real Madrid was the club he'd dreamed of. Disappointing, heartbreaking even, but it was what it was and we moved on.

And we never would have been the best. Not with Barcelona on the come-up. Not with Fergie's point blank refusal to sign a midfielder, refresh she squad, alienation of Carlos Tevez, and questionable tactics at the time (as much as we love him). People have short memories but 2009 was when the cracks began to show.

He also got a Yellow for taking off his shirt so misses Portugal's away game in Azerbaijan on Tuesday. Strategic by him? They have a Qatar friendly in between on Saturday so I hope he's done with Portugal now and gets to Manchester pronto.

Ronaldo missing game for Portugal is bonus for us, enough time to refuel his batteries.

    Edit:

@Ashur Only 19 friendly goals is bit weird.

Weird to a certain extent. Suppose it's not hard to come up with a variety of valid reasons why his goal output has been less in friendlies. Get that he's a goal machine, who was desperate to score but it stands to reason he had to pick his battles, so to speak (especially the deeper he got into his career). The competitive juices might not be flowing as hard in a meaningless game and so on...
That breakdown of his goals just reflects how clutch he is and how he tends to come up big in important situations and games.
