In the Mallorca interview, I believe Hoppe said he was supposed to be subbed out four minutes before the moment pictured below, but that the ball never went out of play. Naturally, v Jamaica he subbed out in a relatively pleased state of mind.
Ah... gotcha. Well, that was a lifetime ago. Fans can have all sorts of peculiarities to root for or root against a team...especially if not in their hometown. For example, I think for five years, I called RSL “Fake Salt Lake” because of how much I hated their team name. Therefore, I can’t begrudge someone for choosing to dislike a team for whatever reason. Nonetheless, it’s not like Jermaine Jones, Wes McKennie, and Matthew Hoppe are hanging out with the SS anytime soon. In the modern age, I have found Schalke to be a fun club to watch. And I hope they return to the Bundesliga sooner than later.
Seems like a crucial stretch for Hoppe. He has a competitor for the starting position at the club, so he’ll have to keep working on his game. He seems the right age to be starting to manage his volatility, while retaining the spark that makes him the goal-hunter that we need at CF. The three people Berhalter seems to trust most at the center forward (Sargent, Zardes, Pefok) have not been consistent producers of USMNT goals in big matches, which is why Hoppe and Pepi both deserve a look at that spot. Both seem to have that ready-for-prime-time mind set. I am excited about seeing what they both do with their USMNT chances.
Hoppe can play out wide or as a second forward and indeed if Mallorca sets up around a target forward that might be where most of his playing opportunities are.
In recent years (recent means since 2005 or so), I've liked the way they played at times. but they were the last club to cling results of that era (mostly because they dominated it, and hadn't been much good aside from that, when they were given a leg up).
It happened during the summer, when there wasn't enough going on to fill column inches quotas. If it were to happen in, say, October, it would have happened on a Saturday and been forgotten about by Wednesday morning They don't call it the silly season for nothing.
Sometimes it's no big deal. Other times, you find yourself in the doghouse. Not a recommended way to deal with your frustrations at your boss.
Lucky for athletes as they still get paid whereas us mortals gotta find a new job or blackmail the boss
It was just throwing a curveball at people expecting a Hoppe pun - unlike @bungadiri - I don’t provide name polling services. If someone wants to collect a bunch of options and start a poll, I’m happy to update the title to meet the demands of the masses. The current one is too long anyway.
@zlatan_but_a_car 's ... Island Hoppe-ing: Matthew Hoppe at RCD Mallorca ... was an instant hit - no poll needed. @nbarbour 's suggestion that we call Hoppe Mhoppe was also extremely popular.
You're starting to worry me. How about the simple modification: Island Hopper: Matthew Hoppe at RCD Mallorca
Our SD never said any such thing, in fact he said that Hoppe is a brilliant young player: Matthew is a brilliant young player, but he would have found it tough to obtain the regular starting place in this team in the next few weeks that he wants. We wish him all the best for his personal and sporting future. Sounds like Hoppe wanted a guarantee that he would be regular starter in the next few weeks, likely to assure NT callups. With Terrode and Bulter on fire, a regular stsrting slot in the next few weeks was not a certainty.. Fingers crossed that he gets that regular starting job at Mallorca!
i was thinking of a free hoppe pun... but they all became far too long. There was even a michael jackson free willy association pun, but it legitimately was longer than a Freddy Adu thread
